    I'm old-fashioned for my orcs. I like them as an "Always Chaotic Evil" race. Every game needs some straight-up enemies you don't need to feel guilty about fighting. The Peter Jackson orcs are pretty much how I like them.

      I like morally complex humanoid characters, so instead of orcs I swap em out for a homebrewed race of bio-mechanical necromancer constructs I call the Dreg, they don't speak, they are essentially function as hive of fleshwarping ants. Perfect cannon fodder for the wokespotters.
      What I am trying to say is they are tyrannids or xenomorphs.
      Orcs in my world are more akin to wood elves or nomadic tribes, Elves are more akin to the high elves and dark elves they use slaves and magic and generally the racial stereotype for them is elves are backstabbing greedy narcissists when in reality thats not entirely true as there is an elvish underclass of peasantry, dwarves were the people who refused to leave the laboratories and bunkers of the old world and they are very hermetic, they don't like the other races and both men and women grow beards.

    Color me jaded; but if they are really bringing back Mystara, then I expect them to screw it up like they do nearly everything they touch. WOTC doesn’t seem to want to really devote much to anything other than the Forgotten Realms. But considering how big Mystara is, then there's no way it's coming out good. If they somehow pull it off, I’ll be happy to take back some of the things I’ve said about them. I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong and I’ll give them praise when they earn it. I just think it's just odd they chose the Krugel orcs out of all the possible options to choose from for hinting at re-doing Mystara.

    • @Mr_Welch
      @Mr_Welch  2 месяца назад +18

      They did it entirely by accident. They had no idea what the Krugel orcs were. Like when they included Strongheart and Mercion on the new PHB and didn't realize they are canon Mystara characters. It's just old content for them, they can't be bothered with context. I'm not optimistic, but I am amused when they claim to have meant to do just that all along.

      What I've been thinking is that, to "avoid offending" one group, they've made a tone-deaf decision to model the orcs on a different (modern-day) stereotype instead - which could equally easily generate the same kind of comments (complaints?) as leaving them alone.

    Hey Mr. Welch, great video as always. Love the Kara-Kara, you want a different Orc, the Kara-Kara are the way to go! Their ancestral chant gives them 3 temporary hit points and doubles there proficiency bonus with the intimidate skill. What good is intimidation? It causes the frightened condition. The sharktooth sword they have gives the wielder advantage on intimidate checks. The spells the witch doctor has are cleric spells. So cause fear and dust devil are no longer on the cleric spells list. I just call them island spell. A lot of this module is fear based. Tapu means Island God, a name given for the living God (hog man). I even came up with a beautiful description for their wooden scale mail. I did a lot of reading on the Kara-Kara and their abilities. Everything I found was from D&D not a homebrew.
    Thanks Mr. Welch you have a wonderful day!

    Lets be honest. If WotC released *The* *3* *Amigo's* as an adventure to protect a village against Orcs from Mystara's Hollow World, would that not that be cool? It's a classic adventuring tale, but this time our adventure's are all actors *pretending* to be adventurers without giving the game away. I have full confidence they wouldn't make it *good*, but I'm sure Mr Welch could do a video on it to make it fun and...coherent.

I'm just as baffled and bemused by their choices as the next person, so it ain't really for us either. Literally every culture depicted in any fantasy you or I could think of is based, to a greater or lesser extent, on real world cultures, and this can be done in bad taste, obviously, but you've got a company with people who don't actually care about misrepresenting cultures at all, and just thinks their surface level analysis (ie sales and market analysis) tells them: people more concerned with respectful representation = change a bunch of stuff to make it as generic (so, ironically euro-centric, because western culture is what we consider to be generic) as possible, or.... you get what they've done with orcs now, which is, even for them, quite baffling. IDK, I never really bought their products after 4e came out and nowadays I run games like Shadowdark, BECMI, Call of Cthulhu, anything newer than 3.5 is off my radar for the most part, I just keep seeing stuff about the orcs so that made it on.
