Powerful. An all time favorite. Dad, granddads and many family members dug that coal to provide for us. This song always hits home . God bless all those coal miners.

The greatest understatement in history -- Eddie saying "That's a good job there." at the end. The crowd's brief pause, and thunderous applause just says it all. The absolute most emotive version of this song ever recorded. It just rips the tears out of you.

That is one of the best, if not the best, bluegrass vocals of all time. You can hear the anguish in Dudley's voice and see it in his face. He is feeling what he is singing and that's what makes this such a great performance. It gives me goose bumps when I listen.

In one of the comments someone mentioned the brief pause at the end of song followed by thunderous applause. In an interview with a well known classical conductor recently, he mentioned what a great compliment it is when that happens; to the music and the performance. Well deserved here.

My all time favorite bluegrass song, the words, the music, the singing, it does not get any better (and probably never will)
Thank you sooooo much, and God Bless.
Chuck, a Yankee hill billy and proud of it

@RTO70, thanks for the info. Since I didn't know about these guys before, I won't bemoan the fact that they aren't performing anymore. Thank goodness for RUclips though. Such a rich resource . . . Like your Vietnam piece at your site too.

@dogloverlcp not in a very long time...don't know the exact date, (early 90s perhaps?)...but the big money didn't come as fast as expected, so it ended. This is a KILLER version of this song by the way..kudos for someone posting this one

Mines are scary and dangerous. I once went as a tourist on an ore care down into the Bisbee Arizona mine and couldn't wait to get back out again. It's too bad that humans have to do work like that. Dirty, unhealthy, and dangerous. Takes a tough breed of man to do that work
