I fell in love with this ban when someone put it on a playlist back in 2020. I haven't heard anything like this band in AGES. I'm 59. This band makes me feel young again.
Heard "Starburster" on local radio in Nashville, Tennessee, USA and loved it. Going to check out more of their stuff. I really love in the chorus where he takes a huge gasp of air and makes it part of the song. Going against the cardinal rule of singing.
Somehow I didn't learn about Chaos for the Fly until after I had made this video - I would have mentioned it otherwise! But yes, great album! Really shows another side of Grian.
Bizarre to have missed it- was on heavy rotation on 6Music. One of those albums that encourages obsessive replays. Some decent vids on YT. It's a lovely sidestep.
They're solid on every level. Top class musicians, top class performers and top class poets/lyricists. I remember hearing Too Real a few years ago and i was taken aback by the poetry. Had to go and listen to the rest of their stuff. You can tell outright that they are passionate about what they write and how they write it. The words arent there to serve as space fillers, they're half of the substance. A lot of bands are fantastic musicians but lyrically just arent up to scratch. Fontaines DC are truly craftsmen on every level required. Next thing for me is to see them perform live. Ive heard great things and i think Grian is a versatile front man who easily carries the weight of his role. The best irish band we have. Possibly the best young band in general that we have at the moment.
Once I had the luck of meeting Grian just out and about in my city while they were touring near me, he seems incredibly down to earth and is lovely to any fans who meet him :)
I discovered Fontaines DC when A Hero's Death was released. As a 16 years old at the time, I was going through a lot in this period, but I fell in love with their music and Grian's poetry. It healed me and made me stronger. Now all I can say is that they're my favorite band, Skinty Fia is on my top 5 albums of all time, I Love You is one of my favorite songs ever released and I can't waut to hear Romance in full (Starbuster is already on repeat since it's release) 🖤
Thank you for this video!!! I’ve been obsessed with the sound of this band for a couple weeks and now I have some more background information on their lives. This was excellent and your takes on the interpretation of there albums we super helpful with understanding the context they were written in. Ahh so excited for Romance to drop in August, absolutely OBSESSED with there sound and lyrics
This was such an insightful video, brilliant work!! I've been listening to them for a few years, and Starburster has me in a chokehold at the moment - also the teaser video they released of Romance is SO exciting, i can't wait to listen to the entire album! I'm going to see them play in Cardiff in November, can't wait!!
They came to Los Angeles, I felt like I was watching Liam imitating Mark E Smith …. Definitely a tough gig , We didn’t expect them to be so eloquent, but real!! Great doc!!!
Big Fontaines DC fan from Weston Super Mare, seen them at the 02 academy in Bristol, Glastonbury other stage, will be there next month to see them headline the Park Stage and have tickets for them in Cardiff in November. New album sounds like its going to be unreal!
Great video. Have you heard of The Clockworks, they're another irish band that kind of remind me of fontaines' earlier stuff. If not I highly recommend
Just found fdc and their new single and having listened to it feel I've experienced something so totally new and brilliant. Gald to not be able to define what's it about. Looking foward to new streets untrodden, clip klop, clip klop, livealiveoh!
Massive Fontaines fan but I think the fall deserves a mention as there clearly influenced by them, even the band said so at the start of their career, if you don't know the fall u gotta
Only found them over summer, their aesthetic on Romance is unreal, I saw Starburster on Jools Holland and thought they were an American ska/emo band kinda like Good Charlotte... thank you for covering this band
Love this video been a Dubliner I can see this lad has certainly done his homework and done it brilliantly.....is there a band on planet earth with four albums on the bounce all classic albums in there own right.
@@MusicMongooseYou're welcome! I love England's English 😂 Let me know if you find yourself in need of assistance to talk about flamenco or Rosalía 😂✌️ I would be pleased to help 😊
It's nice to hear Ireland has events trying showcase new talent. We need good new talented musicians and songwriters, and especially singers. Someone that doesn't sound like Cookie Monster. LOL. All the old greats are just that getting old, and there needs to be a passing of the torch so that music and its importance (and yes music is very important. Maybe the most important) stays relevant. I listen on average to 4 hours of music a day and don't watch television, especially the news. I can assure everyone that is the cure you are looking for. I'm sure Fontaines D.C. would agree. "Life Without Music Would be a Mistake".
I will see them perform a shortened set on the same ticket as Cage the Elephant, Glass Animals, and St. Vincent. I'm trying to familiarize myself with their catalog, however their vinyl records are sold out everywhere. Is it advisable to begin with Dogrel?
We love Fontaines D.C.! 💚Just to say that they did record the first version of 'A Hero's Death' in LA, but did not like it, so recorded it again with Producer Dan Carey (who also did Dogrel and Skinty Fia). Looking forward to the next album for sure. 🤩
There new single Bug has now made me a bigger fan than i have been. Starburster grabbed my attention also but Bug is by far there best song imo. Its one of those you play over and over and it just keeps getting better.
As i read from their latest bio, ROMANCE is the band’s first album with producer James Ford. Tracing back their last tour as opener act to Arctic Monkeys, for sure we all know / can guess how was the cross section between Fontaines DC and James Ford happened since James Ford is really close to Arctic Monkeys , and also the producer of Favourite Worst Nightmare, The Last Shadow’s Puppets’s album.
I stayed in the Liberties when I visited Dublin for the first time in December. me and my brother are huge Fontaines fans, so when we stumbled across the Liberty Belle, we were elated. we went in, and honestly? not only the best pub we went to in Dublin, but the best pub I've been to in my life.
And it doesn't hurt if your lead singer happens to be "cute". As long as he can still sing, right? To some extent? We've certainly have seen the bands where looks supercede talent as a frontman or woman of a band. And plenty of ugly really talented singers as well. In a band you "hope" the focus is on the music. Something missing in what is considered "modern popular" music today. Music is not dead. Not Rock and Roll or any genre. You just need to make sure you have "good" rock bands, or any band of any genre. And no as a musician i can say that is not "subjective" when it comes to music. Music gets blurred when seen foremost as "art". Because music isn't meant to be seen, but "heard".
Yikes, I knew that the Anti Irish’s sentiment was on the increase in Britain due to Brexit , which clashed with Covid , but the way that the narrator spoke , it suggested it was over Covid lockdowns etc . I like the way that the group didn’t over do the Orishenss like others such as The Pogues or others . They are believable . The potato lark in this day and age is hilarious, since the standard of living in Ireland, even during the last recession of 2008- 2013 was a lot kinder and more forgiving than life in Britain eg welfare assistance , cost of living etc . Just goes to show how piss poor the English argument is if they have to resort that old colonial notions of superiority It’s also a bit outrageous to be waffling to lads who were barely born in the late 1980s ie the end period of the IRA reign. But sure, let’s remind London of their Role in Bloody Sunday, Ballymurphy , Dublin- Monaghan etc Surprised with that the narrator was into the band Good research .
Don't care about their new visual image. And even though I don't dislike their new music, I wish they'd stayed closer to the style of their debut. Darklands versions sound even better to me.
Hmm I don't belong is a political statement abt brexit, the good Friday agreement and borders..why you think he's in the sea......... Irish border.. taps nose 💃🇮🇪
@@MusicMongoose omfg i can't believe you replied 💀i watched your idles video afterwards and i noticed you did look more like a real human so congrats!!
The language is Irish, not Gaelic. Irish in Irish in Gaeilge. Gaelic is the name for some Sports and other things but the language is just Irish, when you're speaking English.
Keep loving them- some are indeed Irish, they were mostly brought up there. Even if they had all just settled in Ireland, must they remain mute? How many generations before they 'belong' enough to comment? In these days of fluid identity, can an artist not explore such notions and connection to a place unless they are entirely 'pure'? I was born in Northern Ireland to a Welsh mother and Scottish father, both with an English parent. Would you allow me to talk only of the Union? Idles are accused of fraudulence by Jason Williamson, of being inauthentic due to their middle class background. Joe Talbot talks quite eloquently about this- worth a listen.
Grian born in England of an English Mom and Irish Dad. Deego, Curley and Tom Coll born & raised in Ireland. Carlos O’Connel , an Irish father and Spanish mother grew up in Spain but returned to Ireland for college.

Fontaines fan from Bristol, here! Going to see them for the first time in Dublin this November - can’t f*cking wait!

People should give them a try, they're worth to listen, nice video
Such a good singer and such a good guitarist. I love this band. Make them so popular that they do a Europe tour please.
Nicely done. I first discovered them in the fall of 2018 and it’s been a great ride. You captured it well imo.

The “A Hero’s Death” LA recordings were scrapped and they re-recorded the album with Dan Carey in London
