Although the elements required for life (as on earth) may be common, it's unlikely we'll ever confirm that life throughout the universe is also common because of the limitations of light-speed, the distances required for observation, and the short persistence of our species. Interrogation is a two-way process that will at least double the time required for any inquiry of exoplanets after we send any 'requests' for info. Even the closest star system alone will require ~9 years minimum to explore optically. The best we'll do is to assess the probability of life based on the limited set of variables we know. The technology that might circumvent such limitations is still only speculative. We have long way to go!
