  • hmm wonder when the last video was uploaded-....oh whoops 2 months? :I
    Didn't mean to disappear for that long, but I kinda started out with just wanting to finish this piece before getting to any other video speedpaints,, then it took me quite a while to get that last bit of work on it done and then I joined an october theme month-... It's my own fault, it wasn't smart of me to leave the house-rendering till last.
    I think I learned smth valuable with this tho!! It's that I need to do /all/ of the planning when I'm in the sketch-phase, and not leave the less exciting parts till "later" - because switching from coloring/shading a character back to perspective layout-ing did not go well for me- it blocks the whole flow and it's really difficult to pick up the work again after breaks. So I ended up doing a rough paint-over basically, to try and get it to a presentable level without going back to sketching.
    Gotta spend more time in the planning phase in the future and stop rushing things!
    But back to the topic of uploads, no idea how things will look like in the nearest future - currently got multiple projects going on, while also trying to find time for personal art (and turning personal art into videos is always an option, but not a smart idea to make into a rule)
    This was a commission order from way back tho, so basically, until I find myself in a spot where I feel I can re-open commissions, I'll still be a bit irregular with my posting schedule. Thanks for sticking around tho!!

    The way you paint really puts viewers in there with the character and scenery. Absolutely love this one, beautiful work as always

      As it should be with professionals :)
      In hobbyists you barely see this unfortunately, but they also don’t really take art seriously

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  3 года назад +43

      Well it's a bit more nuanced than that I think! :0
      There exist professionals that don't take art seriously, and there are hobbyists that do. And some artists are happy to stay in their comfort zone and work on perfecting it, others constantly seek to diversify. Some say "Jack-of-all-trades is a master of none" but that's also simplifying it too much.
      In the end, one isn't automatically better than the other - like, why should an artist who is getting paid to design characters learn how to draw houses and mountains if they don't want to?
      But I also see where you're coming from, it's more common for professionals to constantly push themselves, they are getting paid for their skills after all - However, I feel it's important to point out that this line of thinking can be damaging in the long run "you have to do X, in Y manner, and spend Z hours - that is what it means to be professional - to take art seriously" -To give requirements like that will most often just lead to people developing imposter syndrome, even professionals struggle with feeling like they are not doing enough like they aren't "actual artists".
      So with that in mind, I feel it's more beneficial to state that anyone can and should take pride in their work, no matter the circumstances!

    I hope you don't mind if I ask, how do you go about dealing with perspective? As in, how to do think about the grid and apply it to the drawing itself? Do you draw the structures like they're sprouting from the blue grid, which acts like a floor, or do you think of them being underneath the blue grid? Furthermore, how do you keep the perspective constant during the painting process? Like, how do they not get wonky as the painting progresses, or is this just a matter of constant practice?
    Finally, m8 this looks amazing wtf I aspire to be you.
    (thanks in advance :''''') )

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  3 года назад +26

      Hmm Well, yes on one hand the blue+green grid roughly represents the flooring, and anything that is "horizontal", but I mainly use that grid to get a rough feeling for the perspective of the things further away, while I refer to it more closely for the nearest structure that the character is standing on. The more important guide is the red grid, actually, since it's a bit of a top-down view, where the horizon line is high up. The red grid helps me orient all the buildings in a way where they look like you're looking down on them.
      - After all, the green and blue grid only represent 2 "vanishing points" - which I picked to fit the nearest building the best - keep in mind tho as soon as a building is rotated slightly differently, I would have to create 2 new vanishing points if I wanted to do that new house a 100% accurate (repeat for every house, wow yeah no) so I use the grid mainly to just get a rough feel for the perspective for anything that doesn't have to be that precise.
      An on that note, it's important for me to have a rough sketch before creating a perspective grid, otherwise, I'd have no idea how to judge the placement. ( even with a rough sketch, I'm only like 70% sure I placed the grids well )
      And concerning the consistency, it's kinda a thing that comes with time? You start to develop an "eye" for it the more you practice drawing things in perspective; you'll spot when something seems "off" even when you at first aren't sure where the source of the problem is.

    There's so much that can be learned from your videos, I love it. As a relatively new artist who learns by example and analysis, stuff like this is invaluable to understand things.
    Also, I was watching some of your videos a couple of nights ago. I was trying to draw at the same time so I wasn't paying as much attention, but... I was kind of filled with this mix of despair, awe and outright mental fatigue, because my drawing ability had remained static for so long, at a place I wasn't happy with.
    A small amount of time later, thanks to the music and the art and all, my eyes sort of zoned out for a half hour... but I kept drawing, and I was drawing better than 80% of anything I work on! And when I came back, I looked at it and thought to myself that I'd just discovered a way of drawing that worked for me. Meditative drawing.
    I think because I was relying on instinct to get pen to paper and on my brain to come up with the images I was trying to draw, it was just a lot easier. I wanted to try the technique again, so I did... but this time I was just drawing really well without zoning out. I... freaked out a little bit. Just a little bit :3
    Turns out, at some point while I was watching some of your videos I'd overgone some sort of change, overcome a hurdle. Something like that. And art just comes easier to me now? and instead of making like three iterations of stiff drawings I can just push one out in ten minutes? I'm still nowhere near being the best but if it's like percentages, I would say it's taken me a year to get to ten percent, and then a night to get to twenty. And I have you to thank for that

    I would like to know if there's some kind of tutorial or name to the techniques u use I would gladly try it out I love ur style and art and would love to learn a bit more about the process of ur art. If u don't mind ofc.

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  3 года назад +6

      Well the basis of the process is quite commonly used for digital art actually! There's lots of room for adjustments, and I often mix things up depending on what subject I'm drawing, but it goes smth like this:
      rough sketch ( general shapes, composition, placement)
      cleaner sketch ( general anatomy, perspective, proportions )
      (often optional) detailed sketch ( planning out details, exact shapes, textures)
      --
      Lineart
      --
      flat color
      --
      shading/lighting ( set shading layers to "multiply", and lighting layers to "soft light" and/or "hard light"
      --
      rough bg -> detailed bg (can be done inbetween any of the previous stages, sometimes with rough lineart, sometimes painted on only 1 layer, depends on the piece)
      --
      this is a process I most commonly use for commissioned work, since I know I can achieve a very consistent level of quality with it. For personal pieces I tend to experiment more, mesh several stages together like coloring and shading, often for more painterly looking styles.

      @@Remarin I see I will look a bit deeper into it then and thanks for the light and shading tips didn't knew how that layer scheme I noticed u used a lot of those in the video but didn't got to see since I was on the phone. Now with the name of the stuff it will be easier to research.
