  • Damn guys, I don't get commissions like these very often, but they are tons of fun! Instead of being asked to draw a specific character, I was asked to draw something akin to concept art for this specific creature; the great basilisk wyrm (imagine basilisk crossed with wyvern)

    Absolutely beautiful. Stunning. Love the pose and the way the creature is enormous compared to the castles and the tiny houses by the lake.

    Everything about this piece is incredibly epic! So amazing and awe inspiring. Especially paired with the music the whole scene gives this feeling of depth and movement, the event is happening right before our eyes. It makes me want to know what the story is, what`s going to happen- what did happen. It`s like you`ve created a mirror right into another world and it`s incredible. How alive and grand everything feels is perfect, I really have few words to describe how much I love this amazing scene. Thank you for sharing it with us and thank you to the commissioner! This by far has to be one`ve my favourite artworks it is so epic and wondrous. From the movement to the atmosphere to the sheer skill and vision, you have created a masterpiece.

      The ground shook suddenly as the trees began to swing and the animals run in panic, the mountain that been laying there for so long began to move, slowly rocks cracked as something was coming, something was rising out of the natural stonework. All sound seemed to fade as the mountain split apart and a creature, so large it made every human feel puny and tiny began to rise. Whatever it was, it was huge, big... and it was breaking free from its slumber. The humans watching gazed in awe and terror as this huge creature rose and as they gazed into the creature's hollow gray eyes they all made one final gasp as they turned into perfect stone. The world turned still as the creature had risen and with a heavy movement of its wings, it took to the skies leaving the puny man and creatures that saw it's eyes to forever stand in petrification, flying somewhere hopefully away... from all life that it would taint into stone.
      Or something along those lines, for what happened? Either it awoke from it's millenia long slumber or somebody awoke it. For what is going to happen if this do happen? Well I guess something along what would happen if Cthuluhu and the elder gods awoke, except everyone turned into stone instead. At least where it can be seen.

    How do you come up with environment ideas to put a character or creature in? Some reason I struggle with that most along with posing a character. It just seems to come easy to everyone else ahaha. Love the creature! And his whole realm. :)

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  6 лет назад +13

      Phox Thank you!! And what I did before even thinking of what I'll be doing, was to go on a reference hunt :0 I collected like 15 different photos of "epic" looking mountain ranges (googling terms like "great mountain" or "dark mountain") and had all different kinds of colors, compositions etc. I picked out the ones you see at the beginning around the canvas since they would possibly fit the direction I wanted to go in. And started by simply taking a weird-shaped brush and did some random shapes. But back in my mind I also knew what other art with this kind of subject would look like, so I for example knew roughly where the horizon-line should be. Thus I recommend keeping an eye out for art that is similar to what you someday want to achieve yourself, keep maybe a collection of your favourites, either on social media or in a folder. That way you'll be building your visual library, and have more tools to work with when thinking of ideas :>

    You're such a big art inspiration to me, you have no idea. I wish I could do HALF as well as you did on this.
    But for now, I physically cannot do something like this, because right now I draw on a shitty old dell tablet with my finger on a crap program. One day I will commission you, one day I will be half as good as you, and hopefully one day I'll be as amazing as your art.
    Thank you for inspiring me and thousands of others 💙

    • @Remarin

      A little bit of both?? I do get paid to draw these commissions and I try finish one commission at a daily basis, you could call it freelance work (though getting commissions like this one here, is quite rare) but I currently wouldn't be able to live off of commissions alone. My prices would be too low for that. I could go ahead and just jump to a more serious price-range, but I'm more comfortable with changing things gradually, bit by bit. Plus I live at home still, so I'm in no hurry to make it into a real job.
      But I also like doing it very much ;> it's been my number one source of practice and exercise for many years

  • @AltiTheFallen
    @AltiTheFallen 6 лет назад

    Welp, this is gorgeous!
    I have a question though, I began drawing three years ago, but I don't know how to do backgrounds like you do, could you maybe explain how to do that?

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  6 лет назад +4

      Thank you!! And don't feel bad if you're struggling, it took me so damn long to get more confident in doing backgrounds, and as long as you're not avoiding doing any at all, you're improving even if you don't notice it. And even still, this is the first time I really succeeded with doing a background that has the feel of being "epic/grand" so I'm still learning as well!
      And to explain how to do what I do now, I'll have to go through my growth process concerning backgrounds, so I'll be linking to a bunch of example pieces here
      For a while, all my background were just a mess of textures and patternd brushes, like: remarin.deviantart.com/art/Commission-SatomiSanosuke-490795094
      It was basically my way of avoiding having to go through the struggle,,, smoke, textures, stuff like that, I was doing minimal amount of work.
      When I did try to do actual scenes, I still mainly depended on "plant-pattern"-brushes and effects to make anything look good: remarin.deviantart.com/art/Commission-ShiroTheOne-530393394
      Then I slowly started to try digitally painting the background,, with varying results:
      remarin.deviantart.com/art/Commission-Oitekebori-575407270
      remarin.deviantart.com/art/Commission-Seebaru-578510361 (using the correct colors is very important to make people think you actually know what you're doing :'0 so use reference! At the very least use reference for your color palette!!!!)
      I became more used to digitally painting with textured brushes that I still use today
      remarin.deviantart.com/art/Commission-Dexxus-591740682
      And did some pieces where I simply focused on singular elements
      remarin.deviantart.com/art/Sketch-Commission2-0-Dareios-Ahearne-593619191
      Cliffs, tree-bark, clouds,, if you know how to render some singular things, you can apply that skill to thousands of images.
      Along the way, I made some discoveries while doodling with pen too:

    Excuse me for asking, but what size and resolution canvas do you work on?

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  6 лет назад

      This piece was roughly 5350x2950 pixels in 300 dpi. (the weird numbers came to be by starting off from a 16:9 ratio (standard screen ratio) and then going up to the size I usually start out with 5000x5000 for my random artwork)
      I have only recently started paying attention to the ratio, since I was given the advice that when potentially showing your artwork to people working in the industry, you want your cinematic pieces to be in one of the standard proportions :0
