My Dad had a set of corn plows just like that for the old John Deere B. It's nice to see the old equipment still in use. Brings back some good memories. 🙂

I enjoyed your video about cultivatin' corn. I grew up on a dairy farm jus t west of Chicago in the '50s and '60s and dad farmed with Farmall and a WD Allis. On the other hand, our neighbor to the west had a nice J D A and mounted a 2 -row on it to cultivate. He never over-worked it: 2-16s plow, 8' tandem disc and so on. Maybe he thought it was a B. Another fellow to the west farmed with two J D "Gs" and you could here them all over the place. Anyway, all the farms around there are gone and that wonderful black dirt now grows houses. Thanks for the show; love to see your vintage equipment in working order.

Spent many days on the 720 with the front mount cultivator. I always thought they did a better job than the rear mounts. No crick in the neck after a full day was a bonus. Loved every minute of it.

Did 290 acres a year , twice, on a JD 520... Hated every minute of it. My only reprieve is when I got to bale hay instead. But good for you if you loved it. We would cultivate so close to the plants that you had to totally concentrate every second. Baling hay was relaxing...

I live in New Zealand and my Father had one of those popping Johnny’s for weeding the rows of sweet corn.
I hv clear memories of him swing the fly wheel over and the hissing sound when the brass compression cocks were open.
He also used it to drive an irrigation pump to water the corn and potatoes day and night….never broke down.👍

I was 12 or 13 the first time I cultivated. A 4 row rear mounted cultivator. On a John Deere 70. In about 71 dad went to a 6 row planter. The 70 would not pick up a 6 row liliston rolling cultivator, dad traded it off!

    • @williammatzek4660

The 4 row planter was 14 yrs old. We were farming more land. We set the 70 up to pull the new 6 row planter. It done a good job. We hooked up to the rolling cultivator , the 3 point would not pick it up. Dad put the cultivator on the 4020 diesel row crop standard. He done all cultivating that year. The 70 was traded for a 1530 John Deere , it was the row crop tractor until dad sold out at 84. In the early 90's I bought a 1954 70 on gas. Swartz wide front. I have kept it in a shed. Calcium has destroyed one of the valve stem holes on the rear rim. Radiator needs cleaned and repaired. I put a little oil in both spark plug holes. Turned the engine over by hand. It's not stuck. That 70 and I were made the same year. I now have the time, guess I should get it going again. Dad kept the 1530. We still have it. I have a 4010 and 4020 and a couple old round baler.

Your high tech, sophisticated cultivation equipment looks very much like what we always farmed with.
We had a 2 row cultivator on one of the 520’s with shovels and a 4 row with sweeps on a 630.
I usually ran the 520 and did all the point rows.
    Enjoyed the full watch 👍🏻

It pays to cultivate. Even if you use chemicals. It lets the air in the soil and also it helps to let the rain in after you do it.

If you don’t mind sharing, what the name of the corn you plant? You think that corn would grow ok in hot, humid SC? Love those front mounted cultivators! I have some 4 row front mount still use on 3010. Wish I had 50 or 60 with cultivators. My dream tractor! Folks around here think I’m crazy, I just love farming, it’s not work to me, kinda like play for me. All my neighbors have round balers, I still mow with sickle mower, bale with NH 273. Love it.

Do you have any end play in your flywheel and does that worry you with these old 2cyl tractors? My H has about .016 when spec is .005-.010. Can’t seem to improve it and not sure if I should run it. Thanks.
