God, I hate Bruce Lee talk because now we have the fanatics who think he was invincible, and then the opposite end of the spectrum of idiots saying 'he was just an actor'.
Essentially, Lee's hypothesis of fighting has in a sense been proved in MMA. He was definitely a visionary, and inspired many fighters of today's age.
How would prime BL fair in the UFC? Probably not very well if he couldn't defend a takedown. However, with training and time, given his ridiculous work ethic, I'm quite sure he would have done very well.
Chael, you refer to Chuck Norris as real because he competed, yet he competed in point karate. How about Joe Lewis, considered the godfather of kickboxing, who BL became affiliated with and soon after Lewis went on a huge win streak, becoming the champion. Then there's Mike Stone, and Gene LeBelle.
    Anyway, what we know:
    - he had great technique, as observed through film and demonstrations
    - he had the knowledge of many martial arts/fighting. Why would world champions train with him if he had nothing to offer?
    - he had the physicality
    - he grew up in street fights in HK, so he wasn't a stranger to a fight
    What we don't know:
    - how well he could apply his principles in an actual fight
    - how well he could take a punch
I think if he was around today, he would be working with and training many top UFC fighters.

Bruce Lee was one of those guys, he spent time training as a monk in a Shaolin temple. He then went on to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1972, and received training at Parris Island. The dude is hardened to the bone. If he were to be a fighter in MMA today, he would be smart and disciplined enough to train with the best, top tier MMA practitioners and fighters, and exercise his variables in wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, etc.
He must've been very fit and well conditioned back then when he was training regularly, so I feel cardio wouldn't be an issue, as a matter of fact his cardio would be insane. It's a fun fantasy to dive into, but I feel a lot of people sleep on Bruce Lee tbh

There are a lot of problems when considering Bruce Lee as a great fighter. There is no video of him in a full-contact fight. Not even one and I looked. What we have from him are movie fight scenes, demonstrations, some light sparring and some training footage. The training in his backyard is not impressive. I would not go as far as Chael Sonnen to say he didn't fight anyone. I count underground challenge matches as real fights. If Bruce Lee had fought Chuck Norris in a full-contact fight in his backyard and filmed it I would count that as evidence. If you beat a Karate world champion in a full-contact fight you are on their level. Instead for Bruce Lee we only have stories of him getting in real fights. The Wong Jack Man fight was not filmed and eye witnesses give different accounts of the outcome of that fight with some saying it was a draw and others saying Bruce Lee lost. Beating a Kung Fu master who didn't compete in tournaments is also not impressive.
The fight with Yoichi Nakachi in Seattle also not impressive. Beating some random Karate Black Belt on a YMCA handball court is not a significant accomplishment in the world of fighting. Even if Bruce Lee won by knockout in 11 seconds like Jesse Glover said we don't know how good Nakachi was and there is no video. A lot of Karate Black Belts got destroyed in the early UFC events. The Mixed Martial Artists competing today are much better fighters than the ones that competed in the 1990s. Bruce Lee won one official competition winning a high school Boxing tournament and beat a boy named Gary Elms. Some people questioned the existence of Gary Elms. I have seen pictures and records that the fight took place but winning a high school Boxing tournament does not mean you are world champion Boxer or mean you can beat Top 10 Boxers in their weight class.
The testimonies of friends are highly questionable. I do believe that Bruce Lee was a highly skilled Martial Artist just like Jean Claude-Van Damme, Michael Jai White and Jet Li. I also believe that Martial Arts actors can fight on some level. They are not push overs and they are better fighters than your average man who doesn't train at all but they are not the best fighters in the world. You become the best by beating the best. Jim Kelly said that Bruce Lee was untouchable in sparring. I didn't see it. I only saw him look good in movies. There are stories of Bruce Lee getting beaten in street fights in Hong Kong. His own brother Robert said he lost fights so he was not unbeatable. He was a talented Martial Artist, highly intelligent and highly influential. He was a pioneer but I think there is a lot of bias from friends, family and fans when it comes to how good of an actual fighter he was. He weighed about 132 pounds so if he was to fight in Mixed Martial Arts he would have competed at Bantamweight or Flyweight. No one in their right mind says that fighters that small can beat Heavyweights or even Lightweights so there is no reason to believe Bruce Lee could do it. I think that if we brought Bruce Lee from 1973 magically back to life with no preparation and had him fight the Top 10 in his weight class he would lose to everyone in the UFC. But give him 3-4 years of training at a good MMA gym and 10-15 warm up fights against progressively better competition and I think he could be competitive and maybe even world champion.

He stood five feet seven inches and weighed 135, however his strength for a person of his stature was unmatched. His work ethic was also unmatched back in the day. To which his work ethic would rival or equal to some of our top MMA fighter's work ethic. You're right on the money, Chael. Bruce Lee's philosophy was very simplistic and straight forward but that was his point: to inspire people to take the most "simple path" to success in combat.
I think that the fact that he didn't join competitions was his choice. He felt the competitions had limiting rules and didn't actually portray a real fight. I think he would've actually enjoyed what the UFC has accomplished.
Many world champions that did compete (Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis) would seek to be trained and train with Bruce Lee; I don't think they would have the same respect for someone like Van Damme or Segal or others that haven't contributed much to MMA.
Bruce Lee himself knew that the biggest argument against would be just that, "but he didn't fight" so he even addressed it and responded "if I say that I am good, you will say that I am cocky, but if I say that I am no good, you know that I am lying"

If you’re setting records in weightlifting, you’re gonna compete. If you’re the best in the world at something, you’re not just gonna pass up the opportunity to compete at it and prove how good you are

There seems to be a lot of people hating on Bruce Lee in the comments saying things like 'he was just an actor' or 'even an average MMA fighter today would've easily beaten him'. I doubt that very much for several reasons:
    1. I've never heard of anyone else other than Bruce Lee to weigh between 135-140 lbs to be able to hit as hard as a heavyweight-according to multiple heavyweight kickboxing champion Joe Lewis. He and Chuck Norris (middle weight Karate champion) both said their fighting improved very much under Bruce Lee's tutelage.
    2. He was unmatched in his knowledge of the history of Martial arts (He had an extensive library with over 2,000 books on fighting). Does anyone who is 'just an actor' possess that amount of extensive knowledge of the martial arts? No.
    3. He is the only one I've seen to be able to execute perfect form doing multiple one finger push ups at a karate tournament in 1967. The fact that no one has been able to replicate or better this achievement 50+ years later speaks volumes.
    4. Nobody alive today has demonstrated the blinding speed that Bruce had. Hypothetically speaking even if someone bigger and stronger than Bruce were to fight him in competition what good would his opponent's size/weight/strength/height/reach advantage be if he couldn't get near Bruce? It's a well known fact that he had to slow down his movements so that the cameras of his day could capture them. Most UFC/MMA fighters techniques today are slow, sloppy, telegraphed and outright clumsy in comparison.
    5. Bruce was one of the 1st, at least in modern times to see the weakness of using traditional Chinese or eastern methods only in order to win fights. He borrowed from western boxing, fencing and judo to more effectively defeat opponents. I don't know of any UFC/MMA fighters today who have shown that amount of vision so as to utilise techniques that are still effective today (e.g Bruce using oblique kicks-JKD style against Chuck Norris in Way of Dragon 1972). MMA fighters today (Connor McGregor, Jon Jones) have really only just begun to see how effective that technique really is.
    6. His dedication to his craft was second to none. He even had to have special modifications made to his exercise equipment so as to push the boundaries of his training regime even further. Again, no one who is 'just an actor' would do something like that.
    7. If you were to give Bruce the advantages of modern training facilities today then Bruce would be even better and be able to adapt even faster so as to tighten up any weaknesses in his game. In all honesty it's scary to think just how good he would be with today's advantages given what he was able to achieve back then...
    Rant over, everyone! ✌

Ok him hitting as hard as a heavyweight is a fucking myth. Just by watching him train with a punching bag vs an average hw, you can see a CLEAR difference in power and chuck Norris was never under his tutelage, he just praised bruce lee on how hard he worked when he trained with him, even fucking chuck norris wouldn't make it if ufc was around back then. He was not the fastest ever just look at fucking ryan Garcia. He was fast but if you believe that they had to slow down the cameras cuz they couldn't catch his movement then your gullible. I love bruce lee as a martial artist because it was because of his philosophy that martial artist today are so much better than him, he was millions of aspiring fighters and martial artists's teacher and now because of him they have surpassed him. But its fucking dick riding fans like you that make people hate bruce lee.

@@yamommyromsies6418 It's not like I want people to hate on Bruce Lee at all which is why I made the comment I did to begin with. I'm just coming out with facts that back up Bruce's pedigree against those who seem to come out of the woodwork and try to defame him for no apparent reason. It's not that I think some UFC fighters aren't great too, because they are but most people still consider Bruce Lee as the G.O.A.T to this day. It's easy to come against someone who passed away so long ago and can't defend himself. If people choose to hate on Bruce in spite of what I posted (still trying to be respectful to MMA/UFC fighters today but still saying Bruce's achievements are still unsurpassed which is a fact), then that's their problem. To clarify, it was not my intention to come off as disrespectful in any way rather I was just trying to emphasise some good points. ✌

Do you have any idea how hard it is to knockout a prime George Foreman in a boxing match or RNC Michael Bisping? None of the achievement of elite professional fighters against other elite professional fighters count because Bruce lee could do one finger push ups? Are you serious? You're defaming professional fighters saying this stuff.
He didn't hit as hard as heavyweight, he wasn't the fastest guy ever and his technique was far from perfect and we have the footage to prove it we don't have to rely on Hollywood hearsay. Just go watch him hit the heavy bag or practice his jumping sidekick.
Bruce was a smart, charismatic guy who was ahead of his time and more capable than a lot of the TMA guys of his era. Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis (the Karate Champ, not the boxer) both said Bruce Lee was a handful in sparring. Also, after meeting Gene LeBell, he started incorporating grappling in his arsenal. If you watch the beginning of Enter the Dragon, you'll see Bruce sparring with an opponent, both in tight shorts and gloves that allowed for grabbing. Looked very similar to what we call mma today. He was way ahead of his time; his vision of what mixed style, competitive combat should look like is basically what we see in the UFC. In the film, we see him land some strikes then take his opponent down and tap him out with a crucifix. Lee may not have been a professional fighter but he was a martial artist who emphasized full-contact sparring, cross training in other systems, strength and conditioning training at a time when that stuff wasn't popular in the martial arts world.

Can sorta confirm on speed atleast as a child. I never really practiced boxing or any sort of actual fist oriented attacks but I was mostly proficient with basic kick attacks. Anyway so my dad taught me a technique he'd figured out which I basically dubbed the counter reversal. So you basically take any incoming attack with a fist or leg and if you planned on using your fist over a kick than you'd swiftly catch or dodge the attack throwing a series of normal punches into whatever expoosed spot they had. So it depends on the attack. Might go for a kidney side hit or a straight throat punch or other body attacks. The weight of their own body would amplify the power of the hit while also throwing off balance because of the catch or dodge. Probably an actual technique taught somewhere but as small child facing bigger kids fast attacks were my go to.
