“There’s nothing wrong with those imperfections.” Dude can you be my life coach
Jessica Helton right!!
Little happy trees :D
Sam is the best
Plus, Kate Bush is more about the theatrics of her songs than just the vocals. In this song, she plays the part of a ghost, so her vocals sound spooky, ethereal and otherworldly. Just as one would evaluate the Wicked Witch of the West’s singing in the Wizard of Oz within the context of the character she was depicting, so should one consider the theatrical aspect and story of a Kate Bush song when evaluating her vocals.
Plus Kate has said herself that her vocal range has dropped, and she couldn't sing like that even if she tried
Yes! Thank you for your insightful comment. :)
So true! Great analysis of Kate!
@@moonshot_72 of course she's older now.
@@queerchoreography54 Kate doesn't need to be "Analyzed."Please.
She was 19 or 20 at the time of this tv appearance, but at the time, live wasnt her forte so to speak, but she was and is, a musical genius, who is very under rated, and a bit forgotten these days sadly.
Kate will always be one of the best for me :)
Underrated? Where? Everyone knows she's a genius.
Our generation does, younger generations, most do not know her at all, and you hardly ever hear her on the radio these days either.
"This womans work" if they know it, they know Maxwells version, and think he wrote it.
@@j0hnn13K Fair enough. I've completely no idea who Maxwell is and that really doesn't bother me.
His version is actually not bad at all, powerful in his own way, from the perspective of the man instead.
The only reason i know it, is because i heard it on the radio, and was like "i know this song... wait, thats a Kate Bush song, but who is this?" so kinda why i remember him (scored a good hit with it in the USA)
j0hnn13K younger generations? I'm 14 and she is my personal hero
KATE BUSH IS QUEEN. 4 octave range and an outstanding creative force. She was definitely ahead of her time.
Bruh wtf
It's even more than 5 octaves...
8* octaves
I believe 5 octaves. I have heard Eb2s and Eb7s from her
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer 4 i think
Everything you said about Kate Bush is on point, it’s more about her creativity than perfection of her voice but the way she purposefully uses it is so unusual and that’s why I love her songs!
Yes, this is the reason why Bowie was so successful, Gwen Stefani's very characteristic voice in No Doubt etc.
She's singing from the point of view of a spirit longing for her love who is still alive. She's acting with her voice.
Yeah, it surprises me that many don't realize this. They'll say how unusual and strange her vocal choices are without connecting it with the theme of the song.
As a fan of Kate Bush, really pleased to see this reaction video. Great analysis as usual, Sam. I learn so much from you and just love your levels of enthusiasm.
She's the best!! It'll be so cool if you made an analysis of Björk, she also has a very child-like tone!
Yes, I totally second this!
And a third!!!!
Would LOVE that.
I love Björk! Please, make video with her song/songs!
Yes!Definitely
The variety of music you react to on your channel and how you find so much to appreciate in a myriad of styles really broke me out of a musical rut and reinvigorated my love for music. Your reaction to what other people would call fails or bad auditions also gave me so much respect for you and really serves as a good example of how to give constructive reviews and criticisms while still being encouraging and really genuinely supportive of people. Yours is my favorite feel good channel, dude.
my english teacher showed us this song in english class when we were reading "Wuthering Heights" and her tone has always made the song memorable for me
Jensen Bullard yeah that’s how I found out about the song too lol. I always thought her voice was very unique
I think ur haircut looks Great!!
Our history teacher showed up Boney M's Rasputin when we were studying the Russian Revolution.. So Umm... That song's always made the Russian revolution memorable for me.
What a brilliant idea. Well done your teacher!!👍🏻
I'd be interested to see what you had to say about her more polished studio version of "Wuthering Heights"
I was thinking the same thing. At this point in her career she's still a teenager and not very experienced. In this performance I hear her increasing in confidence and getting stronger as the song progresses.
I think if Kate Bush did what you said she’d sound just like every other singer and would lose what made her unique and amazing and a compelling.
Troy Turner That’s a serious concern with most vocal teachers
Really? Explain David Bowie then. There’s a reason he was massively more successful in both the UK and worldwide. She was extremely single dimensional and that dimension was weird vocals with theatrical mime. Bla.
@@mightymouse5930 And that was what she wanted to do & what she wanted her sound like, if it's not your taste BLA
I think you're right. This guy should stick to evaluating today's kids that all sound the same, singing re hashed songs & destroying them in the process!!! Basically, unoriginal rubbish.
archiearchie666 people like you literally do not listen to music “these days”. you only listen to what’s on the radio lmao. stop generalizing a decade of music based on a few songs you hear on the radio. there’s INCREDIBLE music released each year.
I love Kate Bush, she's got such a unique sound, floaty and ethereal
You were very generous and constructive in your criticism but I can't help but feel a bit protective over Kate because this is one of the most difficult performances of her entire career. This was her very first television appearance for her very first single and she was petrified to be performing on live TV and had to sing one of her most challenging songs at a different tempo then usual, so the poor girl was struggling just to get the words out. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Kate but I definitely wouldn't let her somewhat weak performance here color your view of her singing as a whole, she was still at the very beginning of her career 😁
Jesse Colton he wasn’t negative at all, quite the opposite. You’re the one that said weak performance, not Sam.
Benn Leyland ok I should have said he wasn’t critical at all, rather than negative 🤷♀️. Same sort of thing though, he explained her technique and how she was making the sounds, but there’s no criticism.
It also isn't live.
@@StephenButlerOne It's considerably different from the original to not be live. Various moments there's plosives on the MIC, what wouldn't be happening if miming, not in the original. It might not of been broadcast live but i don't think she's miming. The reverb is also different.
@@StephenButlerOne It's certainly not the studio track - I can hear little 'mistakes' here and there. I say 'mistakes' because I don't think they detract from the performance at all - nothing wrong with imperfections, as Sam said. It either has to be live or it's been pre-recorded. Artists used to mime all the time on Top of the Pops, but I'm not convinced she is. She's always been such a serious and sincere artist, I just can't picture her miming if she wasn't absolutely forced to do so.
Also I wouldn't mind if you analyzed a video of someone like Bjork singing. She kills it live!
RipperRoo All is full of love live is ethereal.
I instaclicked when i saw that you made a review of this song, kate is such an icon, thank you for making this.
Kate Bush is classically trained, and although it took me a bit to love her because I hate childlike voices, like she does in this song. But she can just rip it. Love her! and great haircut :)
She's not classically trained, she's self-taught as a singer and pianist. The only training she's had is in Interpretive Dance and Mime (the latter by Lindsey Kemp who also taught David Bowie).
@@silgen Well apparently she did take "a few" singing classes and it is when she started practicing her high notes that she sang in the higher register as a challenge. But in her early demos she's singing quite high, so I don't know how early on the classes would have been . I'm not sure if I read that in Under the Ivy (book), can't remember.
i don't think she had a childish sounding voice here
She definitely was not classically trained and I am so glad that she wasn’t that is what makes this song
You keep picking amazing cases to analyze. Kate Bush is a saint. Keep it up!
I'm so addicted to this channel. I have noticed myself actually paying attention to what I do in my car concert sessions during my commute to work. Thanks for being amazing!
Is that your real name or RUclips name? Rare I run into another Waters.
The next logical step is to review Björk singing pagan poetry. Or anything by Björk. I’m a huge Björk fan
yes please!
Björk is a God.
Kate Bush is the greatest of all time. Period.
I adore kate bush. This made me so happy!! Ur killing it with the variety lately
Obsessed with Kate Bush! Love that you reviewed her- her voice is so unique.
I remember my English teacher singing us this song while studying Wuthering Heights, he made me fell in love with this song! It was great to see your video 😻
Wow, your English teacher sung this song for you? That's pretty damn cool. Also, really ballsy for a guy to do. Props to your teacher. I'm jelly of you.
Didn't know Andre Matos was also an English teacher... lol It sounds like a most memorable class to have had. Props to your teacher.
Love Kate Bush everything she makes is unique to her.
Well said mate. We say unique as polite version of being weird.
@@fajaradi1223 No, its unique as something that makes her stand out of the crowd. She uses all those vocal effects on purpose to express the emotions of the story she's telling. There's nothing weird in this. She's a highly talented singer who delivers a beautiful lively performance.
I never heard of Kate Bush until watching this. Interesting. I like it.
Listen to 50 Words for Snow
oh my gosh. I just finished listening to it on Spotify. Thank you!
Hounds of Love is her masterwork, imo. If you enjoyed 50 Words for Snow, I bet you'll love Aerial too. And The Sensual World.
You can listen to any of her songs. They are all great.
Snow is on my playlist, well actually all of her albums are, but Snow is my favourite. Maybe in a few more years she'll make another one. 🤞
The greatest female songwriter this country (UK) has ever produced.
I would've stopped the sentence just before "this"
@@Neuroneos So would i but YT comments are a scary place

I’m so happy at the thought of this video reaching people who might not have otherwise heard of Kate. Xo
Jenna Miller 🙋🏼♀️I’d heard her name before but had no music in mind when I heard the name. I love this video.
Please review Amy Winehouse I heard love is blind or Take the Box live !! Your reviews are always spot on!
Yes, please Amy Winehouse! watching her documentary, I had no idea she was as good a singer as she was.
He's just going to say everything that she does is perfect.
Take the box! 😃😍😍
Kate Bush the legend.. so glad you are listening to her.. but it would be great for you to explore her later work too
Freddie Mercury please :-)
I second that 👍
Yes!
Since I've learned so much just from singing Freddie and Queen's stuff, it would be amazing to see Sam break it down so I can get a better understanding. Please Sam! :)
Also, you can find isolated vocal tracks of Freddie on RUclips, where you can really hear all the details. :)
I've checked out a few of them! I've become a recent Queen fan, and through the discovery of their music, I started to gain more of an interest in that iconic voice, which has led me here, trying to learn and develop! Those isolated tracks are gold... Freddie's pitch and tone is just, well, it's not human. lol
Btw just putting this out there again to maybe react to some stuff by Muse. I’ve long held that Matt Bellamy is the king of vocals, not because he can do “the most whatever” but because of how creative he can get sometimes. And he almost always does it in a way you (well, general “you”) don’t even notice until you listen to the song for the 20th time and you’re like “wait a minute is he randomly transitioning between high and mid notes every two seconds and still making it sound good?” (For an example of that listen to their newest song Pressure)
Seconded! An analysis of Bellamy would be ace.
Thirded. A Matt Bellamy analysis would be great.
Oh i'd love to see this!
oh for sure I'd love to hear Matt's voice analysed :)
I found that the more I listened to Muse whilst also discovering more modern day artists, that M Bellamy really isn't as good as I thought he was 7 years ago :')
Kate Bush is my favorite singer of all time! This video makes me so happy, thank you!!!
I see Kate Bush, I click!
My opinion, the Whole Story version is far better. Possibly the best vocal performance of her career, actually. Her confidence grew exponentially from 1978 to the mid 80s.
I thought she stopped performing live after 1979? (Until 2014, that is.)
@@R0DisG0D She stopped touring but still did promo performances and such on TV shows and other events.
Yes! There's quite a difference between the vocals in Wuthering Heights on the first album and when she re-recorded them for The Whole Story. She definitely got smoother and more controlled as her career progressed.
Aaa I’m so excited to hear your analysis of Kate Bush!! Thank you! I like the way you explain her sound as being the combination of flipping & using interesting vowel shapes to make a really unique sound. I’ve always loved the way her songs sound like vocal gymnastics because of how she manipulates her voice into different registers to aid in the storytelling. Fantastic!
Sam thanks for doing this!! One of my late father's favourite songs and reminds me of him to this day. Thank you!!
Hey, Sam. Have you heard of Neutral Milk Hotel? Their vocals are really unique, would be great to see you analize them.
Rocky Mendes hang on, they're a real thing? I though Parks and Rec made it up for April!
This!
Yes she is literally queen. Her music is TIMELESS.
Gosh I love Kate Bush! Thank you :)
Do the Angra version with Andre Matos on vocals please! Or some Andre Matos stuff in Shaman - Ritualive
SIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Their version is way better. Andre matos is F* great singer.
Andre ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much for analysing this song 🤗 I loved how much you enjoyed the performance and, as always, your analysis is so insightful and educational. If anyone hasn’t seen the iconic music video for this of Kate Bush in her red dress, you must check it out!
I had no clue that there were "voice teacher reacts to ..." videos on RUclips until I saw one of your videos. Then I watched some other teachers, but you're the most professional in describing voice anatomy, physiology and how sound is produced.
Ah Kate Bush, possibly the greatest most original female artist the world has ever produced. Songwriting is phenomenal and her voice, whilst not flawless nor impressive vocal technique wise, it sits well with her story telling and that's all she wants.
This voice coach doesn’t get it - Her vocals sound extreme and almost hysterical- which is intentional ! That’s deliberate for the character and emotions of Cathy! Kate Bush always knows what she is doing. Was either Delius or Lord of The Reedy River that was recorded in a basement where there was a swimming pool. Water.
@@JohnHarbinger I think he gets it, he must have heard Kate's discography or he wouldn't want to react to it. A lot of Americans have't even heard of her.
As her career progressed, her technique got better. She remade Wuthering Heights in 1985 and the difference is night and day. She belts out a healthy G#5 towards the end. Her voice sounds way more connected throughout the entire song.
@@JohnHarbinger But she began writing the song before she read the book. It was the very ending that inspired the song but I agree, she absolutely conveyed the emotion of the story.
She composed, wrote the song and sang it, quite well with that strange groove of her.
Beauty lies in impurities, imperfections, it's what makes the difference between industrial products and art.
Sam, I really enjoy your lesson on Kate. She’s always been one of my all time favorites.
I’d like to hear comments on Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill, both live with David Gilmore and in-studio.
My second request is The Kill - 30 Seconds To Mars maybe compared with earlier material.
Hi Sam, like the assessment, I used to run around singing this at that time lol, I could whistle sing so as a young teen it was a fun sing! Up to date! OMG the image on your T!!!👁👁WOW!!!👍have a great day little sibling💕
When she started singing, I was immidiatly torn because I don't really fancy her tone of singing (the one you described), but at the same time I nearly gasped because her voice sounded so crystal clear and even though it's that childlike tone, she sounds strong and full of volume.
So, don't like her voice that much, but her technique makes the singing itself, detached from the tone, sound very beautiful to me.
Needleworker's Realm This one is sort of an isolated example. It was really early on in her career. She’s also putting on a bit of a character voice since she’s singing as a ghost. Later on in her career she gains a lot of body in her voice.
You should check out some of her other stuff.
The amount of female singers who Kate Bush influenced is ridiculous
I'll admit WH is an acquired taste but two of her most well known songs, running up that hill & this woman's work you might enjoy
@@DanielDiaz-um1xd Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely give them a listen! But I want to mention that the first version I heard of "Running up that Hill" is by the Chromatics, and it's one of my favorite songs. If you want to listen to it, beware that they covered it in a very different genre, which hardly resembles her original version.
Either way, the first time I heard Kate Bush's original, I really didn't like it because she seemed to sort of...scream or call the lyrics in a desperate way which didn't sit well with me in a similar way her tone doesn't, in this song.
But, as I said, I'll take a listen again, maybe it was just a sort of "culture shock" from the Chromatics cover, which I'd been listening to a lot for months at that time.
Either way, she clearly is a phenomenal singer, regardless of me liking her style or not.
Needleworker's Realm a song that really showcases just how pretty her voice can be is Dream of Sheep, This Woman’s Work, or Moments of Pleasure. Wuthering Heights was her first single and intentionally screechy since she was playing up a ghostly specter of a character. From her fifth album on, she adopted a far weightier style of singing rather than staying in the stratosphere all the time lol
I like her version and Pat Benatar's equally as much. They are different enough that they don't sound much alike. Kate makes it have a light fantasy type of feel to it, where Pat gives it a really dark and serious tone. It makes sense since Pat was trained in opera and has that rock persona and sound, where Kate has her own vocal style influenced by her family singing together. She took a lot of dance, but her vocal lessons were entirely for technical purposes so that she had the strength to sing while dancing with more confidence in her voice.
Yes! I would love for Sam to analyze anything of Pat Benatar's. "Wuthering Heights" would be great because he could compare to Kate Bush's version (although they are pretty different already) but I think "Shooting Star" is an even better performance, probably the best recorded-live performance I've heard. And it's always nice to look at the stuff from the 70s and 80s because there's no auto-tune in the way.
Athenis I adore both Kate Bush and Pat Benatar, but it's Kate's song, she wrote it aged 18. Would like to hear Pat cover it though ✌🏻
Oh, I know. I just didn't hear Kate's recording until much, much later. My mom was very specific about what she listened to when I was little, which was almost solely female rock singers, so it was all Pat Benatar, Heart, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, etc.
Suggestion : for fun, you could also review the 1987 vocal version she recorded. An also you could say, her voice reached.... wuthering heights.
Could you analyze a Jeff Buckley performance pleaseee? :DDDD
I would love to see that. He's my favorite artist!
@@MagBuckley me too! :D ❤️❤️❤️

You should do one on her re-recorded version of this on her record "the whole story" and compare and contrast. She was very young in this clip, still in her late teens and her voice was far from where she wanted it, though I absolutely love the sound. She has said that she was not happy with a lot of her early singing in interviews. Great clip.
I like the eery element of the first recording, and I think it's much more interesting that the later one, but the later one (from 'The Whole Story) has amazing vocalisations near the end that this one doesn't. Plus of course comparing the two would have educational value.
If anyone thinks this is the way she sings everything, on "The Man with the Child in His Eyes," from the same album(debut) is a mainstream vocal performance. As others have pointed out, she truly portrays the character that is the protagonist of the song.
well said.
Your hair, it's all gone!!!
He had to cut it for a part in a play :(
I'm truly sad about it :( I love men with long hair but it's so rare this days
He needs to grow it back and participate in plays that accept him with loooooong hair
Yes first thing I noticed too... I know nothing about singing or vocals I just love watching Sam react. Sad emoji for hair.
He donated the hair to charity :)
No one sings like Kate Bush. This girl is also fantastic. 伊卉儿Katty . She has the voice of an Angel. I just made a RUclips channel with her music and will keep adding great videos. It would be very interesting with a reaction.
Shes a genius ( according to Elton John and Peter Gabriel) glad shes one of your favorites. She and Bjork are my favorites. 😍
Listening to this it sounds live a live performance to me, which is unusual if it's Top of the Pops. All I can say is if I'd have been in the audience I'd remember this for ever. There are definitely imperfections to this, but as I say, it sounds live, like a genuine performance, like she's there in the room at the time. Quite impressive.
I love how much content you pump out, it's inspiring.
1) I love that you have taken to explaining in more detail *what* all these terms technically mean and where to hear them. 2) I love that you're doing these more "out there" videos that showcase unusual extremes and I hope you don't get encouraged from doing them just because they appear to get less views because they're really interesting for those of us who watch you to learn
Kate bush is definetley my favourite pop artist but i wouldn't say some of her music is very pop as say. I just love what she does, along with David bowie and prince one of the most versatile and unique artists.
Mark Sanmie yes great taste!
I remember when I first heard this song when I was 17. My English teacher showed this to our class when we were reading Wuthering Heights. Kate Bush has an unusual voice but I really enjoy it. Great analysis as usual!!
I love every bit of this.. all of these strange bits make me feel that Cathy is a ghost..down to the ground. Kate nails it.
tonya crawshaw she truly does.
It's 4am where I live, I've never commented on a yt video ever, but I've been watching your vids for a while and this popped up; I had to watch it straight away. This song is my dad's favourite, he gave me the EP he bought as a teen and I still put that record on often. Thanks, Sam, for being such a kindhearted soul in this world, you are the most constructive vocal coach I've had the pleasure of listening to, and yt needs more of people like you :)
If Kate Bush had followed the standard advice from voice teachers she would have sounded like any other pop singer. I'm very thankful that Kate Bush was never anywhere near a voice teacher!
Legendary song. Stunning woman.
Thanks for that vid, I love Kate Bush, it's great to hear her vocals explained by you, they sometimes sound kinda off, but as a whole she's just an amazing performer and songwriter. I don't sing and I don't really know, but a lot of her songs, like this one, just seem super hard to sing, it feels like a real challenge and I respect that woman for how she manages to perform them.
Lincia they’re hard to sing and that’s true for advanced singers as well!
She was only thirteen when she wrote ‘The Man With The Child In His Eyes’ on her first album. She is incredibly talented and an absolutely amazing and original artist.
Alison M Lewis she's totally amazing, agreed 🌟I cry every time I hear 'The man with the child in his eyes'.. it's hard to sing too. I've practiced lots! Lol It's incredible she wrote it so young, that's always amazed me. ☺️
I am learning a lot of your explanations - every reaction video a bit more...I am starting to recognize that you have totally changed my way of listening to singers now...Thanks a lot, Sam!
Sam could you please do a video explaining the differences between voice type and how different voice types can achieve different timbres. It's quite confusing and ambiguous to me.
He does have different videos for chest voice, mix voice, and head voice as well as the importance of breathing. If that's what you are talking about. Just scroll through his channel 😃
@@carag2567 I mean from soprano to bass :)
I like these videos because they highlight the ‘technical’ aspects and ‘flaws’ in an artist’s performance which is genuinely interesting and yet, we don’t care. Because she remains one of the most incredible artists who wrote and sang this masterpiece as a teenager. Enough said.
I would love it so much if you reviewed Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butlers rendition of Phantom of the Opera.

I'd love to see your reaction to From can to can't by Corey Taylor!
I love Corey and think hes amazing
I second Corey Taylor!
When you say “weird child like tone” I started to laugh slightly because I just realised that but In her defence she is playing the role of Cathy Earnshaw from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (a classic of Victorian literature) and Cathy is technically a ghost in some limbo world
Mate she was 19 live on TV for the first time and nervous.Over analysis of this performance for me.
I really appreciate that you read your comments and react to artists people recommend. I adore Kate Bush, she’s a fascinating artist.
I'd like you to watch Torie Amos who I think had a lot of influence from Kate Bush
I love how he talks about every artist as if they are his students. He talks as if she is still the 18-year-old girl she was when she filmed this and is giving her homework for next week's session. I love it so much. Wish he was my teacher...
Please react to Nina Hagen next! Especially her Rockpalast performances (Naturtrane, Herrmann Hiess Er, Der Spinner), they're astounding!

Where. Is. Your. Hair??!? That’s how she sounded 25 years ago lol. I just love Kate Bush. But SO freakin excited to see this song analyzed 👍🏼 Have you ever analyzed Sarah Brightmon? Her voice can sound like a kazoo to me sometimes...
Rebecca Carraway I'm really excited too! Finally a vocal coach has analysed the majestic Kate Bush! That was 40 years ago, 1978! 😊
Love that you choose to react Kate Bush. She wrote this song when she was 17/18 which is pretty amazing. Really enjoying your videos. I’ve always had a tendency to “switch off” when hearing more technical singers because it can sound sterile to me. Watching you explain what they’re doing has helped me connect to them more and appreciate their talent.
The character she's representing is a ghost.
exactly, this guy is a tool.
Always loved Kate Bush. Her The Kick Inside album still does something very special.
Thanks so much for the review of her style. It adds another dimension to know something of how she achieved these effects.
Mr Johnson, you continue to be an engaging and fascinating teacher.
Would be cool to see you check out Jonathan Davis (singer of korn). His voice is very unique and would be interesting to see what you could pull out of it
Connor Brown yes! The scatting is definitely distinctive as well. Plus dudes on tour, was just in my town last weekend.
You're so good!!! Thank you for these explanations, they really put words to things I can only feel as a non-classically trained singer.
