Embark on an enlightening journey through the life of Idra Kayne, an Afro-Greek navigating the complexities of identity and racism. Born in Athens to a Ugandan father and Greek mother, Idra shares her personal experiences of grappling with societal perceptions that often negate her Greek heritage due to her skin color. Explore her story as she challenges norms, confronts racism, and sheds light into the nuances of belonging in a world shaped by perceptions of race and acceptance. Idra Kayne was born and raised in Athens to a Ugandan father and a Greek mother. With a background in dance since the age of 15 and a graduate of the Vocal Art Academy, she has been professionally involved in music since 2000. In December 2011, she released her debut album "Don’t Walk Away." In November 2017, she unveiled her highly anticipated second album titled "MicDrop."
From 2012 to the present day, Idra has appeared as an opening act for renowned artists such as Imam Baildi, The Heavy, Hannah Williams, Incognito, collaborated with George Dalaras, Panos Mouzourakis, Yiannis Kotsiras, Lavrentis Machairitsas, Zak Stefanou, Phoebus, Elena Paparizou, and has performed concerts at the Garden of the Athens Concert Hall, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, as well as major music venues in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Since 2011, she has also ventured into acting, participating in musicals, children's performances, television, and cinema. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
