  • Fly fishing on Oahu's Flats in search of the elusive Hawaiian Bonefish. It has been a while since we have posted. It has been so long that the two cameras I had no longer work.
On September 26, 2024, We headed to the flats near the airport. It was super high tide! Most times fishermen stop fishing after a certain tide, but not us. We wanted to put a video together because it had been years. And we were determined to catch a fish and get it on flim. After sveral denials we finally hooked the first fish by accident. The fly was draging in the water a couple feet from us and I noticed a bonefish. We moved the fly a little and the bonefish pounced and the fight was on. After several minutes fighting the fish we had it within leader. Then the untinkable happend. The fish was unhooked in the water and we havent even taken a picture yet. Fred (The Angler) reached down and scooped the fish before the fish relized what was happening.
Typically I'll use the Ghetto Super Fly to catch these fish, but switched the fly to a green crab with orance fat eyes, rubber brown legs, and some deer hair. The area were were fishing had very little current and there was fresh water in the area, which meant that any crustation would be a little green with algae. Sure enough, the fish started to react to the green color, and resulting in landing 2 bones before picking the kids up from school.
The bones were feeding in the what is usually dry mangrove area. Bones were everywhere. For every 10 five lb bonefish, there was one huge bonefish. We also chased a golden travelly, with no luck.
