    Very useful! Thanks Erick!
    I used some 2mm self adhesive "car sound deadening mat" on the inside of the cowling of my Tohatsu 6 HP and the result was impressive. I didn't have one of those decibel measuring things, but the noise is obviously lower. I don't know what that mat is made of, but it's VERY heavy for a 2mm thick sheet! I'll be buying a 9.8 HP in the spring and I'll be doing the same thing to it! Can't wait to see the face of my buddies' when I show up with a bigger outboard making less noise!
    :-D

  • @diegeeleel
    @diegeeleel 7 месяцев назад +1

    That’s actually quite a big difference. For those who don’t know, decibels are obtained using a logarithmic function, so a slightly higher value (especially as the volume increases overall) actually is a big change.

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  7 месяцев назад

      It really is. I recently got a 12hp Hangkai, and that one has a similar volume to my 6hp Tohatsu, being a 2-stroke.

  • @FeldwebelWolfenstool

    ..first time I used a 4-stroke, it was a 30 hp Yamaha that we used to go down Sabaskong Bay Lake of the Woods...to get into locations in the bush where there was no road access, to do forestry survey work. I liked the fact that we could bomb down the lake in November, and be able to carry on a conversation in the boat without yelling. We actually had to chop the ice for half a mile to get to shore in one of our drop-off spots...

    Interesting experiment Erick👍. The 4dB difference is significant, I calculated the difference in terms of intensity and the sound intensity of the 1cilinder at half throttle is approx 2,5 times. This is enough reason to aim for 2cylinders or more if sound is an important deciding factor. Very nice and usefull video, keep it up 💪🤛.

    Great job, Erick. My boat and engines are now hibernated till next spring. I'll try to remember to do the same test (with a Decibel measurement App) on my Yamaha 6HP and 2.5HP, both 4stroke and with 1 cylinder, in order to compare with your results in what concerns to the 6HP engine.

  • @seantakumi1

    Great Video Erick ! Just a little note: For every 3 DB/Decibels increase, the human ear generally perceives the sound as roughly twice as loud. So given that sciency stuff, it would seem that your 6hp is roughly twice as loud as your 9.8 in person. Am I correct in making that conclusion ?

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  2 года назад

      Correct, the 9.8 is quite smooth during water travel.

    • @boatsandoutboards9070
      @boatsandoutboards9070 Год назад

      and imagine you are travelling at 16mph with both engines. 6hp would run at full throttle (103.9dB) , and 9.8 would run just above half throttle (96dB)

    Excellent video. I'm in the process of chosing an outboard engine. I've already ruled out a 2 stroke coz they are outright noisy and I was wondering if a small 4 stroke (3 to 6 HP) single cylinder was quieter or noisier than a 4 stroke slightly more powerful engine with 2 cylinders (8 to 9.9HP). I had assumed that the twin cylinder was more balanced therefore creating less vibration. What I didn't know was if the smaller cc of a 6hp would make up for the fact that it has only one cylinder in terms of noise. Well, this answers the question. If you want quieter and smoother the twin stroke twin cylinder is the way to go. Thanks Erik!

      The 6hp I use on my SK385XL Kaboat, and the 9.8hp on my ZK380 Kaboat. I tend to use both quite a bit, but my favorite is the 6hp because it is light and powerful enough to move me on the boat. Not very good when you have a passenger.

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  2 года назад

      I made sure the exhaust was underwater to prevent that. The 9.8hp, having 2 cylinders, creates a natural balance and makes it a bit quieter.

    I find my twin to have a much more pleasing sound then my single 6hp. I like the power of the 20, but the small engine takes me back to my roots, and is much easier to schlep around in my 73hp car.

    • @ErickMartinSucre

    Erick I know the rules are a little different in the USA but are you thinking of getting a 20HP at some point it's a 2 man lift out of a car but even more quiet and more power than you know what to do with on a SIB under 13 feet in length. We love are 3.8 meter Honwave and 20HP Mariner. 👍

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  2 года назад

    • @oliverskinner8962
      @oliverskinner8962 2 года назад +1

      @@ErickMartinSucre yeah it's definitely a 2 man lift not something you could do solo but man does it fly with 20hp I don't think 9.8 would have been enough for us anyway as the 2 of us weigh 476 pounds and that's a lot for a 9.8hp

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  2 года назад +1

      You could, but it won't be fast. Maybe 14-16mph with the 9.8. That 20 does fly though. I have a friend who has the 20hp EFI Tohatsu model.

  • @SombraEnMovimiento
    @SombraEnMovimiento 2 года назад +1

    Nice comparison! I don't think the sound difference is because of the number of cylinders, but more because of build quality. I think, for example, you will find a more sophisticated muffler and air intake in the bigger engine.

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  2 года назад +1

      Both actually. Having 2 cylinders creates a more harmonious balance inside the engine, allowing it to make less of a racket.

    • @SombraEnMovimiento
      @SombraEnMovimiento 2 года назад +1

      @@ErickMartinSucre Yes, I agree. I meant to say it is not necessarily ONLY the number of cylinders making the difference, but other factors involved as well. Overall, bigger engines are more expensive, with more and higher quality parts.

    Hey man, as i see you got the 6 hp first than you found it a bit small and got the 9.8 twin cylinder one. You seem happy with the 9.8 . Why did you not buy the 15 hp one ? Your boat should take 15 i think. What is the reason ? I am trying to buy my engine too , and my boat is very similar to yours. I got a 3,5 meter long boat with rigid floor and also inflatable mid. Is a Russian military model. Boat has about 80 kg complete. ( 170 pounds ) . Should i get the 9.8 too ?

    • @ErickMartinSucre
      @ErickMartinSucre  2 года назад

      9.8hp is 86 pounds, and the 15 is about 105-110 pounds. The main reason why I got it is that I started doing some outings with other inflatable boat enthusiasts that have bigger motors. Now I can at least keep up with them.

    • @harringtonb2
      @harringtonb2 2 года назад +1

      If you need to transport the motor often avoid the 15hp. That was my mistake the 15 is simply too heavy. I have the 6hp and seems like 9.8 is a good sweet spot.

      By getting the bigger motors you don't need as much throttle to get much more performance. You can keep the noise down by just having more power and not having to be full throttle all the time.

  • @perrinayebarra

    For a kicker or trolling motor on a larger boat those single cylinder engines are intolerable. So much vibration traveling through the boat gets old quick. Yamaha used to make a 6hp twin that was nice and smooth but they’re all singles now.
