I just hope Gohan isn't the next protagonist in the next series. I have been extremely disappointed in what they have done with him every since the cell saga
Not since Cell saga, but since Super. Lots of people complain about the 7 year time skip between the death of cell and great sayiaman arc because Gohan “Changed.” But the issue is not that he changed, but that he didn’t change. The story of Z could have been about Gohan’s progression from a reactionary character to an active character to conclude his developmental arc. Truthfully, Gohan never was the biggest fan of fighting, so he is allowed to make this mistake once… but what super did to his character (we don’t talk about tracksuit Gohan 😭) is unforgivable and lead to nigh impossible rectification. Several Gohan fans are happy about his new beast form in superhero. Although I am glad that this is potentially a sign that he may share the spotlight with Goku and Vegeta, people should be unhappy at the form, because it feels forced, as a plot device merely to get him back to the story, rather than a carefully crafted path. It feels lazy.

And when Goten and Trunks first whent Ssj in the series as children. Obviously no other Sayians that we knew of at the time had achieved this. I got really excited about that. But then Goku and Vageta took off again leaving everybody in the dust and Gohan turned into a little school going family man.

Furthermore, Gohan was capable of doing grade 12 level questions at grade 6, so it could be argued in converse that he would be wasting his academic potential had he exclusively trained. Also as a side note, I did defend the Buu saga a little bit, but the fact is, it is the weakest saga of Z, so much so that my favourite arc in the buu saga was the great sayiaman arc, before the villain’s introduction. The scarcity of slice of life in DBZ makes it so enjoyable, and the intersections between Gohan and Videl were entertaining as it exemplified the struggles of a domesticated sayian hybrid. I do believe Gohan could be a warrior and a father + husband simultaneously. The writers just need to commit to their characters and saturate the world, I’m tired of Goku and a Vegeta show… it truly is a shame that only characters with the ability to change hair colour with merchandise opportunities get the spotlight. I want to see Krillin, Tien, Yamcha, Roshi, maybe even partially the original characterisation of Videl. As for Goten and Trunks… well the sad truth is that Goten was created specifically to act as a placeholder for a young character such as Goku in the original show, or Gohan at the beginning of Z. His character actually had no potential to begin with. Also, making Goten and trunks go super sayian in the “super sayian bargain sale.” Is only cool at first glance, but it truly does devalue the legendary status of the form. Trunks achieving it is sort of understandable as he had the gravity chamber and Vegeta… but Goten training with Chi Chi… no.
