I have always loved the music from ABBA, ever since I was young!!! Now that I'm almost 64, my wife and I would like to say "Thank you for the music"!!!! :)
The reason they were so successful? So many reasons. It was like lightning in a bottle. Two friends who are geniuses at writing music meet and fall in love with two incredibly talented singers, who also just happen to have voices that blend perfectly together. There wasn't a dud in the group. They each brought something magical that if one were missing it would not be the same. They've all had success after the breakup, but nothing was quite as good as when they were together. The women were both beautiful, one a fiery passionate redhead and the other a mysterious and aloof Swedish blonde, the costumes were outrageous and pure 70s camp. It all just worked. Then when the breakups happened, it added a maturity to the group that took them well beyond a mere pop group... and their later music is now recognized as being incredibly crafted and poignant. There will never be another group quite like ABBA.
Agree almost completely, except I don't necessarily think Frida was more "fiery and passionate" that Agnetha. If you look at the old interviews, Frida is very soft-spoken, seeming almost shy. Agnetha was known to struggle with anxiety and was reclusive in later years, but in interviews she was often opinionated and charming.
Mon Mothma I am talking about their stage presence. On stage, Frida exploded and Agnetha was more reserved and shy. I think there was more focus on Agnetha in interviews and maybe that’s why she seemed more talkative... she was asked more questions because she became a big focus of the public’s attention.
It comes down to the music. ABBA became popular again in the 90's once the campy visual element was removed. The music had strong melodies, great lyrics which become more impressive once one realizes that they were written in a foreign language. The arrangements and backing musicians weaved a web that turned into a solid brick wall of sound. The singers sounded like goddesses on the wind, riding valkyries and singing siren songs of Valhalla. There are hundreds of years of musical evolution in ABBA tunes, spanning different continents and time periods. Forget their popular stuff, listen to "Arrival" or "Eagle", or "Hole In Your Soul" or "The Piper' or "The Visitors". You will hear hundreds of years of Northern European folk music evolution distilled into a four minute modern pop piece and the execution was always brilliant.
The secret was Frida and Agnetha singing in harmony. That is the ABBA “sound” we all think of first. Two great voices, complementing each other perfectly.
To me it is the fact that their songs were pure poems. Poems and odes to vulnerability, lack of self esteem, unreciprocated love, deception, break up and other issues very pertinent to the human condition. The music was upbeat, but just to pass the much darker lyrics. Abba has a song for every moment of our lives, particularly those where a significant other is involved. Somehow the lyrics of "Don't shut me down" is quite the 360 degree angle of their-( our)- lifelong story. They are the wonderful recovery message to the agony of "The winner takes it all". Nice interview. Some interesting answers, too. Björn says he can't pinpoint what made them so successful, and then he says "we did it from our hearts", which to me is a very important part of their lasting appeal. Coupled with being a group of 4 extremely talented people (plus many more around them). And Frida mentioning the fact they were 2 couples that people could relate to is also a very valid point.
Frida said it: They sang from the Heart💖 ABBA - 'is' , 'was' , and I feel - 'forever will be' ...cuz Love is Forever 💞 ...in this Group - I call that the Group ABBA - is Magic from the Heart🌈👍
And that "pure magic" finally happened in 2018 and resulted in the Greatest Comeback in the history of Pop Music 😍😍 (Btw- Frida's speaking voice is like feeling the smoothest silk against your skin!)

You had an almost spiritual connection with your audience. That's why, even today, you are loved and appreciated. ABBA is special. Your music transcends generations, and will go on.
The best groups come about naturally and organically. A combo manufactured by a record label or TV show would never think to contain the quite odd mix that made up ABBA. A guy whose first love was the accordion and influenced by Classical as well as Swedish Folk music. Another chap previously in a Folk band influenced by Skiffle. A young singer of Schlager infused Pop songs and Connie Francis-like heartbreak ballads. Then another vocalist who was almost a throwback chanteuse from the days of Jazz and Swing with Operatic training. But friendship and romance drew these four talents together. And this particular concoction resulted in something very special.

As a fan what you had were great songs. History proves that now. Anything to do with ABBA is still big even today. You only have to look at films and stage productions of ABBA to see that they were never forgotten.
I can never understand why people still mock their costumes, surely it was the sign of the times back then, its the music that will live forever not what they wore.
I've always said that The Beatles were the 60's & their songs are still being played today. The same goes for ABBA, they were the 70's & their songs are unforgettable. Their latest album Voyage proves this.
I respect Abba for maintaining class and humility throughout their careers. While there is no competition, Abba 40-years on, is up there with legends such as the Beatles, Michael Jackson, etc. They all champion charities and beliefs post Abba in a way that allows them freedom to advocate as individuals yet preserve the Abba goodwill. Thank you for the music and advocacy.
Frida is right: the fact the 2 couples were looked up to as 'relatable human beings in a perfect world' most definitely added to the ginormous success. It also helped that they were perceived by most as attractive human beings with sheer angelic vocal skills.....there you have it. I think especially children, like me at the time, were hugely 'susceptible by the ABBA virus' for it spreaded like a disease: positively of course. I would even go as far as to say, ABBA is like cocaine without the side effects!
I listen everyday with my five year old granddaughter! We love to sing along with them! We have so much fun. I hope she always remembers our time singing with ABBA. ❤️🌹❤️
To everyone here saying that Frida looks better here......what are you trying to say? Frida was absolutely gorgeous in her younger years, just as she is now!

I think they had the ability to make it seem that they were singing to you. I know they always make me smile when any of their videos are played. Plus you could tell they cared about their performances. Their outfits were planned to perfection along with their dance moves. And how they reacted to the audience was so genuine. Abba would never take their audiences for granted by not being prepared or showing up under some type of influence like today's performers.

Four phenomenal talents and beyond that let us not forget Michael B Tretow and their other musicians too. M .B Tretow was instrumental in giving the distinct ABBA sound. Their tracks' sound quality still holds up, it will hold up forever even with alien technology. It sounded great on a small National Panasonic mono cassette player, it sounded great on other stereo players, on a Hitachi 3d super woofer, on a National stereo with AFD speakers, AIWA NSx series, on a Bose wave music system, and now on an old Creative 2.1 attached to a comp(between late 70s and now).

Grupo ABBA
I'm 70 and I'm reminded of ABBA every day as well.
You had the full package with The Songs,Voices,Beauty.
They are a musical genius in history they will standout 👌🌹
Still so much pleasure still listening to the music. Yes Music from your hearts into our hearts. Thank you always!
As a fan what you had were great songs. History proves that now. Anything to do with ABBA is still big even today. You only have to look at films and stage productions of ABBA to see that they were never forgotten.
Espero que vivan 100 años más estas extraordinarias personas !!
I can never understand why people still mock their costumes, surely it was the sign of the times back then, its the music that will live forever not what they wore.
I read somewhere that they wore outrageous costumes for tax purposes.
I've always said that The Beatles were the 60's & their songs are still being played today. The same goes for ABBA, they were the 70's & their songs are unforgettable. Their latest album Voyage proves this.
Every band has its mission. ABBA’s was to bring a harmony to the world of sounds.
Forever❤️
I would even go as far as to say, ABBA is like cocaine without the side effects!
it spread like a disease: positively of course hahaha
@@crosscourttennis1796 "Coronaabba"! Lol
A lot of great information here from their point of view. I would have liked to have seen more of this.
I love the ABBA so much!
Hello how are you doing? Thanks for the love and support.
Wished the couples could have been together
Bjorn and frida seem to really get on
I loved your music & still listen to them!
I loved her auburn hair. My hair is auburn too, and I have always heard my grandmother had red hair. Of course, by the time I came around it was white. I will be 70 in January and somehow I still have auburn hair. Imagine that!!! 😹😹😹😹 Well I do! ❤️🌹❤️
Esse conjunto ,me fez chorar. Me fez amar e me fez cantar. Eles me acompanharam ou eu os acompanhei....amo a todos . Desejo muito amor pra eles . 20/01/21 São Paulo Brazil.
Hello how are you doing my dear?
I don’t know either but it was just so great and appealed to so many and I am grateful for it and still miss it. I don’t think you can replicate ABBA they will remain icons of their time.
Waterloo.. .The best song ever on Eurovision.......nothing else comes close.
Amazing that Eurovision used to be respected all around the World for decent music now it's just total and utter trash every year.
@@adamandeve3592 that is because the focus went from the music to entertainment. the artists does more of a show then performance. also the music industry changed a LOT from doing it for the love of music and talented artists to focus on money and greed
You guys had it. I loved your music made me happy, still does
Please keep your bonding of friendship srong !
I'll pinpoint it for you. Music was fantastic and still is. :)
Forever...forever...Great genius,artist mágic,the best group,I am .love..forever..
Thank you for the Music!
I think is the music, voices, and the beat, that made you so popular.
Frida was the hot wild one, i loved when her hair war reddish.
She is still so beautiful
Her in Dancing queen, Knowing me knowing you and What's the name of the game. Absolutely beautiful woman. 😍😍

I first saw them perform in the middle 1970s. The music was phenomenal. The blonde was gorgeous. But that woman with the auburn hair!! Simply stunning!
Scorpio Woman 💪
Four phenomenal talents and beyond that let us not forget Michael B Tretow and their other musicians too. M .B Tretow was instrumental in giving the distinct ABBA sound. Their tracks' sound quality still holds up, it will hold up forever even with alien technology. It sounded great on a small National Panasonic mono cassette player, it sounded great on other stereo players, on a Hitachi 3d super woofer, on a National stereo with AFD speakers, AIWA NSx series, on a Bose wave music system, and now on an old Creative 2.1 attached to a comp(between late 70s and now).
I totally agree. Micke was an innovative genius and a very vital component of the phenomenal AꓭBA sound, along with their immensely talented musicians. They all made an unforgettable contribution
Lovely interview, thanks for posting.
Agnetha, the most beautiful voice❤️ my favorite.
Jo jo Rey era un grupo los.4 eran talentosos
Anni-Frid is the best!!! Still beautiful!

What you had was love, direction and an affinity which created a mastermind.
The reason why they were successful? 4 very talented, good looking people confidently singing very pleasant enjoyable music with great lyrics and great melodies, and some wonderful hooks. They were successful because of their skill, and they had the opportunity and they took it. And the world became a better place because of ABBA.
ABBA should be enlisted on Human Beings Heritage
I Love ABBA
I love and will always love ABBA
Perché non vediamo mai Agnetha e Bjorn insieme?
Erano veramente una bellissima coppia all'epoca.
I have allways loved abba and allways will. 😍
