- Deciphering the Secrets of the Locust
The plague of locusts stands apart as the only one Hashem did not explicitly reveal to Moshe, instead asking him to deduce it on his own. This is highly unusual-why would Hashem withhold this information? Furthermore, if Moshe had to guess, how did he determine the correct plague? The prophet Yoel (1:4) describes seven types of locusts, so how did Moshe know which one was intended for Egypt?
Another striking anomaly is the Torah’s emphasis on recounting Hashem’s miracles, particularly within each plague. The Zohar details the supernatural marvels of previous plagues: during Arov, wild beasts emerged from both the earth and the heavens; in Barad, fire burned within the hailstones, inflicting dual destruction. These wonders were clearly designed to instill fear in Pharaoh. Yet, regarding locusts-a relatively natural phenomenon-the Torah insists we recount its wonders. What was so extraordinary about this plague?
Even more perplexing is Pharaoh’s extreme reaction. Unlike previous plagues, he does not endure this one for long. After just one day, he summons Moshe, confesses his wickedness, and urgently pleads for relief, calling the locusts “this death.” Yet locusts do not kill-unlike wild beasts or fiery hail. What terrified Pharaoh so profoundly that he surrendered so quickly?
By exploring the hidden layers of this plague through the insights of Chazal, the Zohar, and the Arizal, the locusts, which seemingly is the most natural of all the plagues, will reveal the breaking of Pharaoh’s resistance and miracles that surpass other plagues.
