    Once you get the most done in camera, Lightroom mobile is all you need. Affinity Photo is also powerful if you want PS function on iPad.

    Yes, Lightroom CC mobile is amazing. I don’t have the biggest library, so have been able to accommodate all my photos with their 1TB plan. So I can even access photos I took in 2003 on my phone or iPad at anytime, if there’s a good wifi connection.
    All my professional work is done on my iPad Pro (The 2017 model). For jobs where I need to remove the background I use Affinity Photo. Which I have found for masking works just as well as Photoshop.
    One amazing feature of CC worth mentioning is the search. It’s like searching for images on Google, except all the search results are your own photos.

    I still prefer lightrorom classic and photoshop on my desktop..BUT Lightroom mobile gives me the ability, while on set, to quickly edit a photo for a model or client, giving them a quick preview of my final look. And this has been invaluable.

    Hi... I like the way you do your videos. I always found it hard to like LR mobile :) but... I always keep trying things :) So after watching I thought I'd give it another try but ran into a dealbreaker straight away. Maybe I just did something wrong but is it true that the mobile app doesn't download all the Smart Previews during the sync process? When I start the app it syncs and the collection matches the number of photos which are on my laptop but when I start culling on my iPhone it downloads the photos which are displayed and when I scroll down it downloads the next photos. The syncing process says it finished so it just looks like it only syncs certain data but not the actual Smart Previews. Do you have any insights regarding this issue? Because if this is how Adobe does it, it would be possible to sync multiple weddings and then work on them in an Airplane or when I am on holiday without a data connection.

    I found your channel when putting together my Wine Country Camera 150mm system for my Tamron 15-30mm G2. I was envious of all the attachments he threw in for you. I love my Tamron 15-30mm G2 but the attachment I wish i had had available on multiple occasions is the 77mm ring attachment. I don't know how much time it would take to move the casing from one lens to the other but I suspect that it wouldn't take any longer than changing the lens provided the 77mm attachment was already in place. If needed, I could carry along my old Nikon 300s body which I believe is a good body for telephoto purposes, wildlife etc... but my reason for this message is in
    regards to workflow, I'll break it down, quickly. My goal is to not take up any more room than necessary on my devices.
    I'm shooting with Nikon z6
    I have the Adobe 4 package with PS, LR, LRCC + CREATIVE CLOUD. Typically my flow goes as follows, 1) shoot, 2) scroll through in camera and filter out any bad images and delete. 3) Download onto laptop or pull them up on my tablet when I'm mobile but only download what I will be editing. Also, my camera body is set to save Raw + Fine JPG. Ok, so far this system keeps my tablet operating freely. On my laptop, a gamer Asus and fairly new, I will have my initial download to my photos. From their I'll drag photos as needed to edit in one of the 3 applications and then I'll save it to the cloud. I edit the JPG copy when I'm editing, usually for IG and FB for now. I save the raw file for more important edits. 1st ?, Should I be dragging everything to the cloud as a 2nd backup source or just what I'm working on at the time? 2?, Also, when I am on lightroom in my tablet I can't seem to locate images that i saved from photoshop to the cloud on my laptop. 3?,
    Also, can I download LRCC onto my Samsung S4 tablet? 4?, Also have you heard if the mobile version of photoshop is ready yet or is that what PS mix is all about? I wasn't impressed by PS mix. Any other thoughts you have regarding anything, I'm interested. I have an external hard drive for backing everything up as well. Finally, I'm a student of film days and I took a long break since 2001, I'm about up to speed on things but I still am having difficulty with presets. Photoshop is not my strength, and I'm color challenged to make things even trickier. Often when people are talking about different subtle colors in an image, I can stare side by side and it's simply lost on me. I've gotten by, but I'm definitely a pure shooter and I see more in textures and balance and depth. Thanks for all the great videos.

What happened to the times where something free is actually that... Now they have my personal info for free. Hopefully my experience will help others. Good Luck Photographers!

    Until iOS supports local storage management and file transfers properly you should stick to LR Classic.
    There is also a consistency issue between synced files. I've had numerous images that look completely different on mobile compared to what I edited in LR Classic. In my experience, cloud syncing is just not consistent yet.
    I might sound like a downer but if Apple fixed these crippling flaws I would buy a ipad in a heartbeat.

    Thank you for these tutorials, Ted! I have been a long time LR desktop user and only recently (maybe six months ago) started using LR mobile when they fleshed out the app. I also got into LumaFusion thanks to Henny's videos. I shoot a lot of drone video and photos using DJI products and for some reason my 8-core 64GB RAM desktop chokes on DJIs 4K video but my 2017 iPad Pro handles them better than I would have believed before I tried it. I love learning how other people use these tools so please, keep these coming! It still surprises me when I find a neat feature that I didn't know existed when I started using the app, like all the keyboard shortcuts for LumaFusion. I enjoy your non-tech posts as well and have been a long-time fan. Keep up the great work.

  • @TheVFXbyArt

    Here is my issue:
    I'm not a big cloud fan. Relying on fast bandwidth to work on my images seems like an extra layer of what can go wrong.
    Plus we now have lightning fast tablets. We can do pretty much all we want on a tablet.
    The tablet needs to occupy the realm of what the laptop did: Having a remote ability to do tethered photography, cull and, yes, bring your presets, to preview as close to your final image on the road as you would have at your workstation.
    When you get home, you can just copy your images and catalog from where you were at and pick up from there.
    Now adobe using the cloud to sync remotely? I can see the value in that, bit it should not be your only option.
    What I need fro, LR mobile is:
    1) tethered shooting to see my image on a big display like the ipad.
    2) ingest into a specific catalog.
    3) rename images to coincide with the catalog and project.
    4) do initial culling and rating,
    5) Ballpark to fine tune looks while on the road, have the ability to send proofs (IOS makes this such a pain as far as organizing, perhaps LW mobile can create a proofing output dir).
    6) Using syncing to sync to a catalog at home or generate said catalog at home.
    When I get home the big data transfer of GB's of RAW or DNG images can happen there where they are archived on the desktop, backed up, and then maybe tweaked for final look on a large calibrated monitor.
    Does this workflow jive with anyoen else. Granted I'm still stuck on a pre-lightroom Mobile workflow. Please correct if not out flat educate me on how to do this. thank you!

    For color sensitive work it's probably not the best idea to be switching from phone to ipad to desktop. not everything is calibrated similarly, and it may vary from device. Same with brightness. Maybe not an issue for most people, but for printing it matters.
    I'm interested in being able to cull and sort photos with CC though. That seems like a much better use for my workflow.

    • @B_vids
      @B_vids 5 лет назад

      Niptin for most workflows those differences wouldn’t matter. Likely most people won’t send final files to clients or print from a mobile device but you *could* if you needed to. Also Apple products have really good Color right out of the box so it’s mostly a non-issue in that ecosystem.

    • @Niptin
      @Niptin 5 лет назад

      @@B_vids I appreciate the response, and you're right: for most work you wouldn't show a client a final image like that, or print off of a phone. And I'm sure apple has great color as well. But, in the fine art world, not having a device that can be calibrated by taking into account the surrounding ambient light or or be tweaked still means there is inaccuracy in color production when printing. Color reproduction changes from printer to printer, camera to camera, editing process to editing process. The professional photographers I know don't use apple screens to edit photos (though they are quite good). They use monitors specifically made to deal with 100% (or as close as mechanically possible) color accuracy. For most people, they won't notice or care, but for printing, I would leave the color editing to the desktop and transfer file storage to the other mobile devices.

    Yes! I actually use Capture One Pro 12 for Sony to import to a session, deciding there which are “keepers”. I do some initial edits there as well (I prefer Capture One color rendering over LR CC). Export to CO and import to LR CC and that is my cloud storage library. I do further tweaks in LR CC, and just love that it syncs to cloud. I can share an album as a website and control if users can just see or can download. I can do Instagram posts. Since I never used classic LR this workflow gets me to my destination nicely.

    Awesome Ted this is very intriguing I've been longing to get away from using the desktop for editing pictures and use an iPad to complete the work. Like others have mentioned I'd love to see how you are picking photos and getting them to the iPad for edits. I'd like to see you do a shoot. If I do a small photo shoot with my three year old just trying to get him in a pose I want or certain look could take 150-200 photos depending on what I'm going for. How are you working through a large number of photos are you importing them all or just the selects that you may edit? I'd like to see more on that work flow. Also are you still then backing up to your desktop or NAS storage because I'm sure you being a professional you must need terabytes of storage not just the 100 GB offering from Adobe. I feel like I would blow apart that 100 GB of storage in one year so how do you manage that? Thanks for all of the advice it's great!!!! And one last question about color can you calibrate your iPad screen if you plan on printing from it or do you leave the printing to the desktop/laptop and just do digital from the iPad?

      LR is meant to be a streamlined version of PS for the common tasks every photographer needs. Instead of adding a layer for WB, then contrast, then sharpening, etc., you just drag a slider for each. However, for major retouching, you still need to take the file into photoshop.

    Adobe needs to give users more control over cloud storage. Trying to delete files and folders and have the delete persist across all devices is cumbersome. iPad OS with a file system has helped considerably. Do your image culling from a large shoot outside of the app. Lightroom wants to upload everything to the cloud and that slows everything down.

    Just hope Adobe will include some features like panorama merge, HDR, and the possibility to bring presets from files directly in the iPad (now you need to import them from Lr CC on computer to synchronize and have them on iPad). Adobe should think the iPad app as a standalone version, not an extension to the desktop Lr CC... same with the yet to come Ps iPad.

    I will probably go this route soon. One of my concerns relates to privacy. I wonder how much information about how you edit photos is being captured and retained by Adobe. Awesome video Ted, really informative. Thank you. What I'm most curious about is how do you archive and back up with your new workflow? Is it that you import all your RAWs into your Hardrives first? Do you do that from a PC or the iPad? Also with Sync I'm not fully sure but how do you choose what you want to sync to adobes cloud and what you don't want to- especially since you say select images. And since you are editing on the ipad, what do you do when you are finished editing? How does that affect your catalog especially if you may want to go back to a previous edit? The editing is definitely very possible but the workflow around it I'm very confused about and would love to know how it can be done to access the laptop/computer as little as possible. I know it's a lot of questions but thanks in advance

Also, I often finish an image on the iPad and want to be able to download the full version... please correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think this is possible if you’re working with a smart preview.

I thought that the normal time to use Lr will be during back flight, but it’s always something that more important or you really tied too much. What about you? When do you work with stills? Thank you!

    It seems like you only have a few GBs of photos synced via adobe cloud at any given point in time. I’m most curious about where the majority of your photos live and what the process of moving photos from Lightroom CC to this other storage medium looks like.
    I initially subscribed to the one library mentality and synced multiple TBs of RAWs into Lightroom CC, but quickly discovered the performance limitations of the desktop edition of Lightroom CC. Having a structured process of moving photos out of Lightroom CC so only the most recent photos are living there would be a great help to me.

    Ted, I'm a huge fan of syncing with LR, especially for online sharing. One frustration that I have is that you can only sync one catalog. I use Lightroom classic and when switching from computer to computer it's a pain to change the catalog you're syncing. Is that a non-issue with mobile? Thanks!

  • @asdkant

    I am not convinced. For me it's mainly an issue of:
    - powerful mobile devices being prohibitively expensive
    - internet connections can't handle the RAW files in a reasonable amount of time

    • @AlexScene

      I've used it before when it first came out. It wasn't terrible on a Samsung Note Pro 12 tablet for the kind of usual adjustments you would be doing in LR (WB, sharpening, exposure, etc.) With these proxies Ted is talking about it should be fine on almost anything. Also, back then it wasn't meant as a replacement for a desktop, it was meant as an on the go tool. This was a few years ago though and I imagine it has only gotten better.

      I picked up the new 12.9” iPad Pro and started using LR Mobile again and was amazed at the differences between the app today and just a year or two ago. Shoot with the Sony A9, full RAW and have been doing all my basic editing on the iPad the last few weeks. It’s extremely handy to not have to be tied to my PC and the feature set of the mobile version is so very close to the desktop Classic version.

    • @B_vids
      @B_vids 5 лет назад +1

      David Apodaca you don’t need to “switch” per se. They work in tandem. If you have an adobe subscription plan you just login in the mobile and desktop apps and choose what you want to sync. Doubtful most people would want to fully switch to LR mobile exclusively. The storage and backup workflow would be limiting and cumbersome. Keep your main RAW files on your sync’d desktop (with maybe some imports in LR mobile while travelling).

    What about screen (colors and all) calibration?
    It's the only thing that holds me from switching to mobile.

      @@B_vids that's what i read and it is pretty amazing, but what about the screen brightness and temperature.
      I guess the second one falls into accurate color representation. But for brightness, is there a way to adjust it knowing where to set it to have same results on a printer or on your other calibrated screen? Thank you for answering!

    • @B_vids
      @B_vids 5 лет назад

      Wouldn’t be any different than finding the right brightness on you desktop monitor really. If the display is good the brightness would effect colour representation and you probably wouldn’t, in most cases, send to clients or print straight from the mobile device but do a cursory look on the desktop first.

    • @Memo.esperanza
      @Memo.esperanza 5 лет назад

      @@B_vids I used a calibration system for my monitor so it tells me what the brightness should. That's my concern for the Ipad or any tablet since from what I've read you can't calibrate it. I guess I could do some test to find the right spot tho. Thanks

    • @B_vids
      @B_vids 5 лет назад

      @@Memo.esperanza Honestly if your desktop display is the correct brightness then you could probably just hold your iPad next to it, match the brightness, and make note of what level it needs to be at. Make sure it set it back to that level before doing any critical exposure work or sending to client / print. Honestly being travel friendly the iPad is meant to be used in all kinds of lighting conditions including very bright situations so that will throw off your working brightness level anyway.

    I would like to see the full workflow! How is the whole process of moving the photos to the ipad, editing them, and then when you get back home how do you sync files and edit from Lightroom mobile to classic Lightroom. In other words, I travel a lot and I need to back up the pictures taken, usually stay on an SDD disk. I wish I could back up with lightroom mobile and start making small edits, keywords and reviews right away.
    I hope I have made myself understood.

    Great video!! I been using my iPad Pro as well for all my edits. I would love to see a video on your work flow. Importing photos, edit then export.
    I currently bring RAW photos into iPhoto on iPad. Then open Lightroom and pull those photos in. I then delete them off iPhoto then make my edits. Then bring them back into iPhoto and upload them into my saved clouds home storage. I don’t want to save all my photos in my Lightroom cloud. Would like to see your work flow, not sure if I can skip the iPhoto part and just bring them into Lightroom directly on iPad.
    Also do you sell your presets? Looking to download some and yours looked great! Loved the filed aged looked.

    Hey Ted! Thanks for the vid! Sometimes I do travel and I really would love to get away from the travel-with-laptop thing. How would YOU personally go about traveling with a FF camera, and dealing with several thousand frames at a time with just the ipad and camera? Would you add a Gnarbox or something?
