- This is a Supplemental DIY/Tutorial for my original Video on how to get CarnEvil to work on Mame. After I published the original video, I received several comments and questions about calibrating the mouse to act as a light gun as well as changing buttons in the game. Specifically, how to assign the reload to the right mouse button. I hope that this video answers all those questions an makes it easy to customize the game to each of your personal preferences. THE MOUSE AS A LIGHTGUN AND ADJUSTING/ASSIGNING/CHANGING SETTINGS/BUTTONS
THE GAME HAS CERTAIN DEFAULTS FOR THE CONTROLS WHEN IT IS LOADED IN. IT IS BEST TO CALIBRATE YOUR MOUSE TO ACT AS THE TRADITIONAL LIGHT GUN, THAT IS IF YOUR USING A MOUSE TO MOVE THE CROSSHAIRS. ALSO, TO ASSIGN THE MOUSE BUTTONS FOR FIRE AND RELOAD. (ALT - IS THE KEYBOARD RELOAD) HOWEVER, YOU CAN ASSIGN THE KEYS HOWEVER IS BEST FOR YOURSELF.
1ST - Go into advanced options and under input options check mouse and uncheck the joystick.
2ND - You have to calibrate the mouse.
When you start the game the screen with "CarnEvil 1.0.3" appears, press F2
This will take you to the Diagnostic Screen.
Navigate using + (up) and - (down)
Highlight : GUN CALIBRATION and press ( F2)
Here you can calibrate the left (green) gun (ie: the mouse)
Follow the directions to get the mouse calibrated as a light gun (The screen will have you move the crosshair to an “X” in the top left corner, once on it fire(in the case of your mouse the right mouse button is your fire button) then the “X” will appear in the lower right corner. Place your crosshair on it and fire/click again. Finally it will have you fire at the center of the screen.
It will default to the right gun, press G three times to go back to the menu.
***If the right light gun calibration does not recognize the “G” key you will have to do the following:
Press Tab: Press Input this Machine: Scroll to P2 - Button 1: Press Enter: Press G: Press Tab to exit***
Now Press “G” 3 times, the menu will reappear, scroll to exit and press F2
Last - You can assign buttons to your own preference by pressing TAB
Scroll to : Input (This Machine) (Assign button by pressing Enter on the field and then hitting the key you want to assign on the keyboard)
Important Keys to assign:
P1 button 1 - right mouse button (this is your fire button)
P1 button 2 - left mouse button (this is your reload)
1 Player Start - 1
Coin 1 - 5

HUGE help. Just can't say thanks enough.As you can see, when you go into the service mode, it says to press the "test" button.Yet, when you press tab and go into the button settings, there IS no "test button" lol.When I saw you press the F2 button, I slapped myself in the head as I had seemingly hit every other button on the keyboard.Lol on me, and thanks again.

Perfect, thank you so much! My mouse is pretty quick and jumpy but i guess i just need to configure that too somehow. Also the games jumpy and the graphics are pixelated. Maybe i need to change the video settings. Great game though, very messed up 😂

Here's an interesting find... While I was playing, I noticed that the crosshair was laggy and choppy, so I started messing with the frame skip options. If frame skip is set to 2, the mouse is much more fluid and responsive. I tried frame skip on 1 and auto, but they were causing frequent audio choppiness. 2 is the sweet spot for my system. The only negative side effect of using frame skip, in my experience, has to do with variable refresh rate. VRR should be disabled or else the screen will have some annoying light flicker. Just wanted to throw this info out there. Hope it helps someone.

For anybody with an F2 key that does nothing, look for an fn key on your board and hold that first. Took me awhile to get to this menu lol.
my reticle isn't showing up. Your tutorial was extremely helpful otherwise as some guy who just wanted mame to play this game on a whim lol.
Sorry that it did not work for you, kinda surprised that you are saying that the reticle is not showing up, that is a new one that I had not come across before. However, just to give you a heads up, I'm going to be posting a new video that will explain how to download a pre configured Mame with CarnEvil already on it and ready to go. Hoping to have it up in about a week so keep a look out.

I am using a dolphin bar and a wii mote for a light gun. Everything seems to be working well except the gun is not firing where the cross hair is pointed. I can hear it firing, but it's not firing where the cross hair is pointed. I'm so confused.
Yes, I've been meaning to put up a video in reference to using the light guns. I'll try to trouble shoot for you. 1st did you calibrate your Wii remote at the beginning using F2? Just like in the video only using the gun? Also, I have found that if you have multi mouse checked in your settings the attached mouse tends to take over for your firing and can mess up the light gun. Also, if your using just a light gun try unchecking the mouse in settings. You should reboot Mame after making the changes. Let me know if that helps, if not let me know.

Big problem I’m on a laptop and my F2 is the mute button how do I disable this? Every time the menu pops up where I’m supposed to press F2 it just muted my audio 😞
Most laptops use the F keys for multiple functions, generally if you press ALT while hitting F2, you should be able to bypass the mute. Let me know if it works for you.
Never mind I was able to disable secondary functions for the F-keys
But my touchpad doesn’t work I assume because since it’s an older emulator it just isn’t compatible with a laptop touch pad but I used WSAD to aim to m my horror this actually made the game quite difficult. But it was still fun I’m literally tearing up just thinking of the memories I had playing this dumb game and how much money I spent to just to come back years later it was amazing thank you 🥹

When I select gun calibration option its says: u8 switch 8 is on - please turn it off. Not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I have not run into that before but it sounds like one of the dip switch settings somehow got turned on. Try starting the game and hit Tab, go to general settings, I believe and scroll down to the dip switches and see if one, specifically 8 has been turned on. If so turn it off and exit. The try to do the calibration again. Let me know if that fixes it, if not I'll try to problem shoot some more for you.
Sorry next question, could I install a second mouse for player 2 if I wanted to do this with a friend?
Yes, it should be the same set up using player 2. You will just have to go into the tab menu and assign each mouse to player 1 and 2.
HELLO I HAVE TROUBLE PLAYING THE GAME IN MY LATOP CAN NOT MAKE THE KEYS FROM MY TRACKPAD TO WORK AS MOUSE AND POINTER CAN YOU HELP??????????

Do you mean the CHD files? I'm not sure where you are talking about getting them. I provided them on my website because I know those work. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding the question.

How Do I Reset My Keybinds?
Hitting esc, then the keys you want ,then enter in the settings tab should work, is that what you mean?
@@Vincent_Serpico So What I Meant By That Is I Screwed Around With The Controls And Now Every Single Input Is Messed Up So I Wanna Know How To Reset The Inputs
@@ldisey You have a few options, after entering the tab menu, you can try to hit esc twice, once to clear, the second to hopefully return the default. However, this does not always work. In the same token you can always just use the same method and change the inputs back to what they were, However, unless there is a option that I have not seen with the menu to return all to default, your best bet may be just to reload the carnevil program and start over from scratch. Reloading should not take very long. Hope this helps.
Hey can you do a tutorial on how to make both players work on the same mouse? Like basically the same buttons and movement. I want to 2 Calibrate on the same mouse. I tried on the 2nd player light gun already, but it doesn't work. I've seen some people on youtube do it and it just seems more fun. If U could help that will be nice and I'll suscribe.
So just so I understand what your asking. You want to play as player 1 & 2, using only one mouse to control the the 2 reticles on the screen. Correct?
@@Vincent_Serpico Yes so when I set the buttons to the same as controller 1 I can only move up, down, left, right, but can't shoot and player 1 crosshair dissapear when did that. Need help on that please. I know it's not neccessary but I'm just trying to make it more fun

Can you send me a link to a youtube video of what you have seen before. I can tell you how to separate the crosshairs and use them, but it only will work during the current game . The game automatically will recenter player one and two for the following game so that it looks like 1 crosshair, even if you are playing 2 players. Although, I have been able to set it to work in tandem using the keyboard, so in theory one should? be able to get the mouse to work in the same manner, still trying to work it out.
