M2 Pro Mac Mini - 4K Editing on Premiere Pro

  • In my first video, I unboxed the M2 Pro Mac Mini and put it to the test by editing 4K footage on Final Cut Pro. Kicking the test up a notch by testing it with Adobe Premiere Pro. The M2 Pro is a beast so it’s almost no surprise it should be able to handle 4K editing on Premiere Pro, but let’s see the overall experience. The footage being used was shot by a Sony A7IV in H.265 HEVC codec.
    This video was shot with the Sony A7IV and edited on the M2 Pro Mac Mini.

    Definitely give DVR a try. Last year I was a total noob to FCP, and after finishing a couple of projects through the 90-day trial I felt essentially none the wiser as to how to use it smoothly. Switched to DVR and immediately it was a welcoming and logical interface, plus it ran smooth and straightforward. When my shooting partner uses FCP I shudder a little at the clunks in the system. NB if you shoot some 8bit 4:2:0 with your A7IV you can try DVR for free. You only need to pay for 10bit 4:2:2 support. Found that out the hard way during my last project 😅

    The Apple Mac mini M2 Pro is in the consumer/desktop part of the grid. Fills the hole between the the Apple Mac mini M2 and the Apple Mac Studio M1 Max which is the the professional/desktop part of the grid. The Apple Mac mini M2 Pro is a great product for the prosumer part of the marketplace.

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  Год назад +3

      @brentsmithline3423 I think it ultimately comes down to the use case and needs. A professional photographer, designer, blogger, etc can definitely get by with even a base M1 or M2 Mac Mini since those workflows don't require the heaviest processing power. For video creation, the power of the machine needed ultimately comes down to the assets you're working with and what you're producing. Where the Mac Studio or even Mac Pro would be beneficial to you is if you're exclusively working with RAW footage from cinema cameras that require heavy grading on a consistent basis or if you're doing animations and motion graphics, by the way I don't know anything about doing animations or motion graphics but I would assume that craft needs the strongest computing power, CPU and GPU. There could be professionals (even within video creators) that the Mac Studio is overkill. An example: let's say I'm a video creator that is sponsored by GoPro. GoPro pays me to produce videos for them so therefore I would be doing it professionally and the M2 Pro Mac Mini (maybe even the base M2) is more than enough to handle editing GoPro footage. But you know what, that's something we could put to the test, a video idea for the future!

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  Год назад

      @ratoncitoleon the base M2 Mac Mini is still really powerful. I think it should run Da Vinci without any issues, though I have not tested or used Da Vinci yet. I had the base M1 Mac Mini and I was still able to edit on Final Cut pretty smoothly. Upgrade the ram if you can and if you are getting the base 256gb SSD, make sure you set your renders to an external drive or you’ll run out of space on your SSD fast while editing.

    Could a 12 core and/or 32gb ram upgrade have solved the stutter issues?

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  Год назад +2

      Possibly but I wouldn't have the definite answer to that. A lot of different factors come into play like the specs of your computer, the clips you are editing, etc. What I can speak on is that Premiere is known to have more performance and stability issues than Final Cut and Da Vinci. I can confirm that on my machine, I didn't have any studdering or performance issues with Final Cut. Da Vinci I am still in the process of learning and testing this one out on my Mac, I'm putting this video out next to show how Resolve performs. All of that aside though, I'd say Premiere still held up fine with the base M2 Pro Mac Mini configuration, minus those slight studders.

      Thanks for pointing that out, I didn’t even realize it. I must have switched it to half for a reason and forgot to change it back. I almost never change the playback resolution unless I applied something heavy like noise reduction and I start getting frame drops. To answer your question, yes I’ve edited at full resolution and had no issues, to my extent. Cutting, grading, multi cam, basic effects, etc, so far everything I’ve thrown at it, it’s been able to handle pretty well. Hope that helps

    Nothing beats a custom made PC to what you need it for. Plus Apple is so overpriced.

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  6 месяцев назад +5

      I think it comes down to preference. I was a long time PC user and hated Mac until I switched. I still have a custom PC I built for gaming and editing, however I now only use it for gaming. For editing I default to Mac. For sure you can get more performance for less money, but what you’re also getting out of Apple products is quality next to none and just how fluid everything works. Plus you’re not getting a PC that has this level of performance in a footprint like the Mac Mini. I also had the Dell XPS 17” fully spec’d out with the 4k screen. Build quality and just general experience does not touch a MacBook Pro even with lesser performance on paper. My opinion is coming from experience of owning and using top PC machines and mid tier Macs throughout a lot of years of doing video work.

    • @JayzBeerz
      @JayzBeerz 6 месяцев назад

      @@mattchungz The thing I hate about any Mac is that you can not upgrade it later. What you buy now is what you have to deal with until it's out dated. Which in turn is a complete waste of money. I have many Apple products. I have some Airpods brand new that took a dump in 2 months.

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah that’s definitely the biggest point regarding Macs is you can’t upgrade and in turn, need to upgrade your entire machine. That’s just the lay of the land with them and them soldering everything together. Though, Macs aren’t catering to that target audience or customers. Those that get into the hardware and tear things apart. That allows Apple to optimize their OS and software to run the absolute best that the hardware can do. Therefore, Macs will perform as expected. Whereas for PC, you can have a mashup of parts and upgrades. Some parts might work better than others, have to make sure all your drivers are updated, etc. Some people like that and others do not. Those that do not, just want to get in, know their machine will perform as expected, and get out. They want nothing to do with the nitty gritty technical stuff. The overall experience of using Apple products is so much more polished than PC, but it’s because the ecosystem, software, and hardware are all optimized to function together as expected. A good example is just yesterday I picked up a new gaming headset for my PC, and the audio wasn’t working. After checking multiple settings, of course it turns out my driver was out of date. For people who have no care for technical debugging, this would drive them insane especially after buying a new product and all they want is to try out the new product. Whereas something like a Mac and getting AirPods, all it is: turn on the AirPods and the Mac will automatically connect to them without even having to touch the Bluetooth settings.
      Sorry to hear about your AirPods, but I’ve had 2 sets of them and have had no issues with them for the past 4 years.
