  • Many people would love to have an apple or other fruit tree in their garden, but don't have the room for the size that some apple trees can grow too. Here I will show you how to plant and grow an apple tree as a "stepover". It is a great way to grow your tree, along a path and is rather beautiful from the aesthetic point of view too, a really talking point in your garden.

I have never heard of this type of training for an apple tree. I look forward to seeing it grow.

Fantastic Steve. It’s gonna look lovely. Black flies are over, now for the mosquitoes, then the deer/horse flies and we’re home free! Happy gardening this summer and thank u for mentoring us newbies!

Hi Steve, have you ever tried using microrizrae fungi for you fruit trees? You sprinkle a tiny bit in the hole when you plant, 3 levels...in hole base, then mid level as you fill in around the roots, then almost soil level when you finish filling in around the roots. I have found my fruit trees are stronger, and adapt faster to my heavy clay soil. I also include lots of my compost when planting and water in well. Worth the little bit of extra expense...some of my dwarf fruit trees are now 40 yrs old and still producing well. Great video, thankyou for showing us a different technique for fruit trees. God bless.

I have never used it. I mean to get some, but I have an aversion to buying stuff :) I will have to get down to the nursery and see if they have some

@@TheOptimisticGardener I'm the same way, use what you've got 1st. But I learned years ago how to help my fruit trees. Spend the $once because the micro riz. for trees lasts along time, on the tree roots. Its' bases of periculture food forest type gardening.

We have soil similar to yours. Heavy clay and rocks. I usually water hole first, then between fills.

Love this idea!!! It sounds like you only planted 1 tree for the full length of the fence? How long is the fence, and if you were to plant a few, how far apart would they have to be?

    • @TheOptimisticGardener
      @TheOptimisticGardener  4 года назад

Thanks :) So each arm is 6ft long. I am thinking that will taking a few years for the tree to grow to and then I will just stop it going any further. I wouldn't want to go any less than planting trees 5-6 ft apart, then you will only have a 2.5 ft "wing" until you would reach the one next to it. In theory you could have the neighbour wings overlapping, as long as the branches were well supported.

Loved the video, but I worry that you are sacrificing personal comfort and safety by not wearing your mesh hat at the end of the film!
I first saw a step over apple in a picture online several years ago while I spent 2 years researching all things apple (because I knew I was emigrating to Apple Country). I have wanted to train some ever since, but...
"You know that you're over the hill
When your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill
    Doin' the old folks boogie
    And boogie we will
'Cause to us the thought's as good as a thrill"
-- Little Feat, "Old Folks Boogie"
(I know they weren't talking about planting tress, but it still applies.)

They should do. They are the same as any apple, just trained like that. Monty Don's trees, on Gardener's World definitely do as I have seen them :) Fingers crossed for a few years time :)
