Why are people complaining about the 80s sound and the rock singing? One of the reasons why Chess is so popular these days is because it cleverly combines different vocal and instrumental styles! Personally my favourite song, along side Pity the 'Singer' and Anthem :D thanks for putting up
When I was growing up my late father used to share this musical (both versions) with my sister and myself, we learned the words to it by heart and all three of us used to sing it together all the time. Its been years and years now, Dad's gone sadly but this Rock-Opera always takes me right back to those times and its almost like he's right here. Thanks for sharing this, it really means a great deal. :)

I remember this was on a B-side of One Night in Bangkok on the 45. Woke up with it in my head for some reason and had to listen to it again. Strange because I think I had the original cast recording on cassette somewhere and this song wasn't on it.
My mom went to visit her brother in London in the early/mid 80's and went to see the musical there... She introduced the music to me about 10 years ago and still love it!!! (Extra, useless background, we're from South Africa and I'm 24 now :D )
This piece achieves a little miracle : it sounds both Italian and Austrian, like in those joke drawings, where you see indifferently a duck or a hare...very nice !
Meran (Austrian)/Merano (Italian) was part of Austria's South Tyrol (Tirol Austrian) for hundreds of years. They still speak Boarisch (Austro-Bavarian German), food and wine a great, skinng and walking heaven - all lost on most chess players, however.
I just saw this in Naperville (Chess). It did not have Merano. But one question. In "One Night in Bangkok" it says "thank heavens I am only watching the game, controlling it". But it is sung by Freddie Trumper, and he is by no means only "watching the game, controlling it".

I don't know that there anything wrong with chess in concert , but this 1984 original version has Benny Andersson and the ABBA band playing-and Korberg, Paige and Head. Chess will never done better than this.
ok, i take back the claim that this one is more professional. that isn't quite what I was going for. I'll stand by this one being more serious, and the 2008 version being more playful. both extremely professionally and enjoyable, but with very different feels.
Without the two extra "All right, I'll be glad to oblige" in the middle, this version has always sounded neutered to me. Weird that the 45 b-side version would be longer than the album cut.

Guess I was lucky I was in my 20s already. Loved (and still love) everything on this ;-) (Okay, there are one or two that I just like, but this one here I certainly always loved).
I found this at the record store. I bought it without having a clue what it was. I think it was because it had Tim Rice writing. I thought it was pretty good. It also might have been pushed on me because of the ABBA connection, but I didn't follow ABBA, I just knew ABBA obviously had some skills.
Totally love the choral quality offset with a little bit of pop. I really think the lines between the two 'genres'(???) should have been mixed and blended more than they have- seems like an age or class division, when it should not be- good music is good music period, If i can enjoy some country music and opera, then most people probably could enjoy more variety, I'm kind of a cranky old buzzard when it comes to the music i'll listen to. This was good decades ago and still is.
@Asusgen You're right. That's the most stunning thing about this musical - thet it encompasses so many musical styles - and all of it written by the two guys known for little more than "Mamma Mia", "Super Trouper", ... Personally I think the plot is a bit weak, but the display of so many emotions is brilliant.
"little more"? What are you talking about? They had more hits than nearly any other band and they are still super-popular today. Don't act as if they were underrated.
Nothing against the person who uploaded this but I class myself as having a very good ear for good music but the musical Chess is the biggest load of garbage I have listened to for a very long time, utter rubbish. I wasted 39 minutes of my time.
Oh horror, 39 minutes of your life wasted! But of course, with very refined taste and an ear for quality, it's nothing you haven't been through before I'm sure.
Your "good ears" are obviously in no fit state to appreciate a beautiful piece of music. But, hey, each to his own. Your taste regarding Chess, thankfully, is not mine.
I only started listening to this because I had only known about One night in Bangkok and was curious what the play was about. The chorus opening of this track...is not a great first impression? Its good, the vocals are good, its a good piece. Not what I was expecting tho...until the 80s part comes in and then I started paying attention again.

Wow. Haven't thought about this one in a LONG while.. EPIC musical!
The melody line of 'When breathing in will turn you on when water tastes like wine' is from ABBA's 1981 track 'Hovas Vittne'.
Ha, yes you're right. Typical musical phrase and of course same composers! Benny and Bjørn made Chess after ABBA broke up.
even the chord progression underneath is identical!
Now that you mention it, it does kinda sound similar.
