I love this hat! Grandson announced at 9 pm that he needs a hat for school charity. I found your site and while I sewed he washed the dishes. What a lifesaver!.. The hat, not grandson.
Hi I am a beginner seamstress and I really enjoyed this whole project, I made a fleece cap for my 4 year old and she enjoyed it... thank u very much for the easy tutorial
I have a large head and one of my reasons for wanting to make this hat was so that I could make it large enough. When I came to printing I selected print at 105% and 110% and selected the one where the headband fitted. All the pieces scaled up correctly and I am delighted with the result. using this method you could scale up or down to make the size of your choice.
Thanks Vanessa! Made one for my husband - with the cold winter blast coming through Florida this week he needed something for when he walks our pup. As always your directions were fantastic and the pattern worked out great, even all of these 12 years later. Happy sewing!
Vanessa, you are by far the best instructor on all of the projects you put up. And everything is so easy to follow along and create on your on. Other websites sometimes takes me forever just to figure out the pattern. Ugh. I will stop here first from now on. No more wasting time. Thank you for what you do.
Thanks! Flannel may work but it won't have the stretch that the fleece has. So, make a sample one first and see if you need to adjust the size to accommodate it not having any stretch. Have fun!
I enjoyed your video very much, I am 62 and decided I wanted to learn how to sew. I have watched tons of videos but yours is very upbeat and moves right along. You don't get sidetracked talking about some nonsense that has nothing to do with sewing, and when you are learning you just don't need that extra chatter. I am in the process of making a fleece hat with ear flaps, I will send you a picture when I get done. Thank you
Thank you for doing all you do for free. I have been doing quilts and other things about 2 years. Came across a yard sale and you know you cannot pass one and I bought 3 large boxes of fabric, and lucky me. One box was full of fleece, didn't know what to use it for so I started using it on the back of dish carriers and now I will try my hand at this hat.
I've gotta say that this pattern is great. I have literally downloaded 6 times and made 18 hats so far. I need a rotary cutter for sure. Thanks for teaching me to sew. The first time took me about two hours and now I can get two in a hour. Thank you
I love this hat. Grandson announces at 9 pm that he needs a hat for a charity at school. Of course all stores are closed. I found your site and downloaded this hat. What a find! Thanks, you saved grandson's butt and he did the dishes. Fair trade!
nice hat good directions I've been sewing for about 37 years and I wish I had videos way back then lol. you are very clear and make it easy to sew anything you show. Thank you
You are one of the better teachers, you give detail and you show us up close and I am really liking you as a teacher and I will definetly look for more ideas from you. Keep up your very good instructions, you don't leave us thinking, you tell u and show us everything, good for you.
Oh, Teresa! You just made my day! You watched my videos for 3.5 days! You are something else. Congrats on the new machine! You won't need much more than that to make tons of different projects. I use my simple machines more often than the others. Thanks so much for your support and for stopping by to say hi! Happy New Year! :o)
your awesome nena gby & your lovely family...! Thanx for sharing your skillz! i'm a rookie on the S.Machine lol...hemming pants by hand got tiring so my aunt god bless her beautiful soul miss her dearly! enough if that...so my mother reminded me that she had my aunts Sewing Machine! & that put a big {!} after learning how to thread the S.Machine for first time two weeks ago I got addicted to it very quickly lol! this RUclips has a lot of teachers & I appreciate all of you!!! this would be my third hobby starting from my favorite of all time since I was 10 yrs old till present is Djing 2nd is wood turning & last but not least Sewing! like a fishing lure i'm HOOKED lol & thanx again for taking time from your busy schedule of being a mother & wife to teach us a diy project! I know i have a lot more to learn! so happy sewing GB & My Blessing Best Regards to you & yours!!!! CIAO!
You are such a giving woman. Thank you for your tutorials. I’m making the Ear Flap Hat for my Grandson, Snowboarder, his wife, and their two Kiddoes all in the same colorways. I know they will love them. Thanks you, and thank you again. Jacqueline Lee Lambie
I've seen so many video's on how to make things and you are the only one that I enjoy learning from. Your clear and make it so easy to do. I have been sewing for just a short while and I've gotten alot of compliments. Thank you.
This is the only channel I've found that's truely geared towards everyone, beginners to experts. It makes me want to sew, and I've already dont two of your infinity scarves in one afternoon. Really glad you've chosen to share your projects online with us!
Vanessa, I love your new haircut.. It's pretty hard to work with curly hair. I have that same problem but now it's down to my mid back & i love it.. Yes sometimes i miss my loongg curly hair.. & thank u for the tutorial.. Blessings to you & your loved ones.
I have to say Thank You! you are the best teacher! I have a hard time learning from and following directions with some online/video tutorials but that is never an issue when i take your tutorials. Thank you for all the wonderful videos and the awesome things you make and teach. I am new to sewing and because of you i bought my first machine and im actually making things for my kids, friends and myself! your are truly an gem!
Yea, just add them in between the seam line for the fabric you want to have on the outside of the hat. Sew them in just like I did the decorative yarn threads. Have fun!
Vanessa, I have just completed 9 of these and bought another bag of fleece as I am continuing on with my Christmas list. The first ones I made without the dangles , but now I wanted to add this for the ladies so that is why I am checking back with you. I did try to post them on your Facebook page but could not figure it out. Thank you so very much for sharing your talent - it is deeply appreciated!
Not sure why it turned out so small for you. Be sure your printer settings are at 100% scale and not "fit to page." Or maybe your seam allowances were too big instead of the 1/4"? But yeah, just adjust your printer settings to print it out at like 120% or something so it's increased evenly all the way around.
I just made this fleece hat and it is adorable. All the hats that I've bought in the store look so weird on me but this one is terrific. It fits perfectly. I drive a city bus and it's very cold out now. I can't wait to rock my new reversible fleece hat on Monday. It's going to be the rave. Thanks Vanessa because you made this project so easy to understand. I really appreciate you. I stay up for hours watching videos on how to sew and the Crafty Gemini is one of my favorites. Please keep it coming. You inspire me.
What a fun, quick project! I'll definitely give it a try. Your new haircut is nice, Vanessa. It's "grown up" and sophisticated. And many women, me included, would love to have your "thin" hair!
I made one with fleece inside and cotton outside. I`m not very good at sweing, so i struggled a bit, since the cotton isn`t stretch. But thanks to Vanessas very helpful video i now made a wearable and totally unique winterhat! I`m SO happy! It`s not perfect, nothing i make evr is, but this is very close and had i used two layers of fleece, like in the video i`m sure it would have been flawless; this is building my confidence and i`m so grateful; THANK YOU!
Really a brilliantly done video. Recently I got a great quality of fleece at the fabric store where I work at a very good price. I came to RUclips looking for fleece sewing tips as I have plan to make lounge pants and maybe some bath robes. Now I'm sure I'm going to be making some hats. Again, amazingly well done video. concise and well presented instructions.
Thank you so much! I just made my first hat EVER! Your easy step by step instructions are wonderful! Your voice is so clear and easy to listen to. Thank you again! (I feel so proud that I sewed a hat today!)
Funny story, I made these hats a couple years ago and printing off the kids size, I accidentally used "fit to page" instead of printing at 100 percent and it turned out the PERFECT size for a baby!! I'm making my 3 month old his now, just came back to this video for a quick refresher on how to make these. Thank you so much again for the pattern and tutorial!💕
I wanted to try this pattern for my teenage grandchildren. I didn't have any new fleece but I did have some old sweatshirts they had outgrown. I cut the pattern from the old sweatshirts and it worked great. I will be ordering some nice fleece to make these for all of the grandchildren (and a few adults). Thanks so much for this wonderful video and pattern.
I love, love your hair Vanessa . . it's very cute on you. Thank you for the excellent tutorial and patterns. You made this a simple, easy fleece project and something everyone will want for winter.
Si! Me lo corte casi todo! Estaba cansad de ese pelo largo y tan dificil de mantener. No pude donar el pelo porque el largo no era suficiente. Deja ver si me lo seco a blower unos de estos dias. :o)
i dont know if i comment on your hair but its Pretty love your curls my Grand daughter's hair is like that too and shes beautiful like you....love all your tutorials too.
I am teaching myself to sew. I just made this hat while watching the video and I love it! Your clarity in explaining the pattern and all the tips are great and very helpful. I'm so glad I found this! Thanks so much!!
i have come to love to sew after seeing all your vidoes. i have done so much of your work. I just a new sew machine for christmas. that i love but need to learn how to use all the buttons. I am so going to try this pattern. You are a great teacher.
Just wanted you to know,,, I'm off to make this for my GS,,, who I CAN'T seem to find anything for other than "money" each year.... he's 26, and works with his Dad's landscaping company,,, in our MA Winter's he's in charge of the shoveling crew... he can't tell me he won't use this at some point!! Plus i'll have something to "wrap"... I remembered this from years back.. so thanks for your help... So happy for your success in the creative field.. You so deserve.. (ps.. I met Jenny Doan at the 2014 quilt retreat in Missouri.. it's something you should not miss!! :)
Amazing tutorial, very engaging! Are the PDF patterns still available as there was nothing in the file that has been emailed to me.. i know... this video has been here for long years... but i only have come across with it recently..
Thank you, Vanessa, for this Cold Weather tute and patterns! You are so generous. I thought I might attach ears to outer hat seams. My daughter would love it! And thank you for adjusting music volume. Your hair is cute! I wish I had curly hair.
i made your hat and a scarf to match it for my dad who has ALZ and cant wear ear muffs anymore... it turned out great the first time!!!!!!!!! thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!! merry christmas!
How adorable is he? I want to teach my grand daughter, she just turned 4 a few days ago...am hoping she will be ready soon...love your tips with the straight lines drawn on the fabric...love your channel
Thank you SO SO much for this tut! My son has been dying for a hat like this but with no strings on it. I am a new seamstress (broad use of the term) and I really appreciate your step by step. Thanks again! You're great. Now a subscriber!
Hi. It may be you are using old thread, the machine isn't threaded correctly, something is caught where the thread goes when you thread it, your tension is way too tight, etc. I don't have a tutorial on tension adjustments. Sorry! Good luck.
Im a beginner sewer and I was looking for a video for this hat to make for my 2year old son and came across yours. You give awesome directions and I'm definitely using this video for the hat. You definitely have a new subscriber 😊
These are wonderful & go together so quickly. Thank you! Just wanted to mention that i made the child's size for a friend who wears an adult small (probably like a tween) and it fit her perfectly. So I'm going to need to reduce the size of the pattern to fit a child's head. Not being critical at all...you're so generous. Just wanted to let people know abt the sizing.
You look great with your knew hair cut. Your the second person I know (well, not really know personally but you know what I mean) that has cut the long locks off. And can I say that hats are very becoming to you also. I've been watching your videos for over a year now and appreciate all you do. Hope you have a very safe, happy, and healthy new year. Ana :)
This is awesome!! Couldn't have come at a better time as my son (10) is currently obsessed with these type of hats! I've been looking for something I can make for him-he thinks its really cool I sew for some reason so I know he'll love it even more :-) thank you!!
Thank you so much! This is the 1st thing I have made since I broke my arm and it was a great success!! Your pattern and instructions were so easy to follow that I made 2. 1 for my brother & 1 for my grandson. So warm and comfy. Just in time because it's 14°F here! Brrrr
Your new haircut rocks V !!!!!!!!!!!! I printed both the adult and child, I love these. It is freezing out and we already had 2 snowstorms. Thank you for sharing this with us.
This was so easy to make, did it in a day! Though, if you are using less stretchy material, make sure to cut it a little bigger than recommended. Mine ended up being too small so I will probably donate it.
Excellent tutorial video!! As a foul weather kayaker, I could really use a hat like this, so I will definitely be making one with the outside being Polartec windbloc, the inside being a wicking layer of polypropylene, and some 550 paracord and a toggle for a chinstrap to keep it on in case I need to roll, or to keep the ear pieces folded up if I need to hear better while on the water.
I can't wait to give this a try! We're gathering warm clothes for our homeless outreach clinic and I have 4yds of fleece, ready to turn into toasty warm hats 😄
I just LOVE your new hair!!!! I thought I was in the wrong place when I saw your picture. You look much younger this way. LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Also LOVE your tutorials....Making the little fleece hat for my 2 year old granddaughter right now! Thank you soooo much for sharing yourself with us! You are such a great teacher.
I've been looking for a hat like this in shops and on websites for ages but not found anything I liked, so decided to see if I could make one - and I found your video! Thank you so much for the great pattern, and the really clear tutorial.
Thank you fir the free patterns. I enjoy watching your tutorials. I like your new hair cut. Goes great with your peppy personality! Hope you keep up with the tutorials.
I love your tutorials...you explain things very well and make things easy. I am digging out my fleece now to make these for my sons for Christmas...thank you!
Thanx for the great video. Easy to follow and clear instructions. I made the 'child' size and it is VERY small. It barely fit my 2 yr old. I'll try the 'adult' today. looking forward to trying more.
Hello Vanessa, i hope you are well. I am one of the lucky ones to have found your tutorial and made a hat today. I love it and will be making for friends, family and maybe friends of friends. I wanted to say thank you for this pattern being free. I might not know you personally however i send this message with love and joy.
I made two of your hats already and love them. I was wondering how much longer the ear flaps have to be on the child’s size in order to add Velcro and close the flaps under the chin? Thanks for sharing this!!
Thanks for the pattern. This is my first time trying one of your projects and I'm so excited. I haven't sewn ready wear in a while and have a question. Are you using 5/8" seams or 1/4"? I appreciate you help.
I love this hat! Grandson announced at 9 pm that he needs a hat for school charity. I found your site and while I sewed he washed the dishes. What a lifesaver!.. The hat, not grandson.
i made it!! i actually did it and it worked. it's the first thing i've ever sewn
Natalie South Park fandom be like:
Funny thing is I think I have a good idea what you did it for and I’m doing the same lol
Me too!!!!
I made this today. Added a brim to protect my glasses from rain. Made it from neoshell - breathable, waterproof fabric. Thanks for the pattern.

David Alexander brilliant! I have the opposite issue, between the child and adult size.

Just made this with my 10-year old daughter. We had a blast and it came out perfect. All her friends want her to make them one! Thanks so much!

Made my wife a fringe fleece hat but she
liked the ear flaps idea! So I've downloaded your patterns. So easy. Thanks for all you do.
I made one with fleece inside and cotton outside. I`m not very good at sweing, so i struggled a bit, since the cotton isn`t stretch. But thanks to Vanessas very helpful video i now made a wearable and totally unique winterhat! I`m SO happy! Thanks for this free pattern. Our church is making care packs for homeless people and this will come in handy. Blessings

Thank you for the videos. You do a great job. Started sewing again after 30 years and you explain everything very well.
Funny story, I made these hats a couple years ago and printing off the kids size, I accidentally used "fit to page" instead of printing at 100 percent and it turned out the PERFECT size for a baby!! First time sewer, like literally today. And i did this and it came out great. Thanks so much. Great tutorial.
My mom is obbsesed with this hat thing so far she has made about 5 hats thx for letting me have time without her yelling at me!
Hi. It may be you are using old thread, the machine isn't threaded correctly, something is caught where the thread goes when you thread it, your tension is way too tight, etc. I don't have a tutorial on tension adjustments. Sorry! Good luck.
Ms. You have inspired me . thank you so much for this beautiful design. And bless your talent and patience.

This is awesome!! Couldn't have come at a better time as my son (10) is currently obsessed with these type of hats! I've been looking for something I can make for him-he thinks its really cool I sew for some reason so I know he'll love it even more :-) thank you!!
what a great video tutorial! perfect...and I'm an experienced sewer. I love your term, "pretty side..." ...it's perfect for new learners.
Excellent instructions and easy to follow. Best I've ever seen on RUclips.
I have been looking for this type of pattern for forever. You are a great teacher and I love the "Pretty side to Pretty side". You hair looks amazing.
Love it....I made a giraffe print hat with matching scarf...thank you very much for all your tutorials...I have learned so much from you!
You need to enter the email address where you want the PDF pattern sent to. If you don't get it in your inbox, check your spam/junk folder.
You are a great teacher! I love your tutorials and I have made many of your ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Vanessa you are the best instructor going, I mean that you are the best, keep it up.
I love your tutorials...you explain things very well and make things easy. I am digging out my fleece now to make these for my sons for Christmas...thank you!
So cute can’t believe it’s already been 8 years. I’m making them again. Thanks!
you do a wonderful job on your tutorials. You are easy to hear..and very clear in your instructions! Thank you!
Just bought some orange fleece to make a hat to wear for walks during hunting season--your hat pattern is perfect and great tutorial!
I'm making this for a costume and this tutorial is absolutely perfect for it, thank you so much
Thanx for the great video. Easy to follow and clear instructions. I made the 'child' size and it is VERY small. It barely fit my 2 yr old. I'll try the 'adult' today. looking forward to trying more.
Be sure you are printing at 100% and not "fit to page" settings. My kids have a lot of hair and it fit them fine.
yup I even measured the little 1 inch box. Maybe the fleece wasn't as stretchy. I'll try again today.
thx

Weird. Maybe the type of fleece. Have fun making the next one!
Hello Vanessa, i hope you are well. I am one of the lucky ones to have found your tutorial and made a hat today. I love it and will be making for friends, family and maybe friends of friends. I wanted to say thank you for this pattern being free. I might not know you personally however i send this message with love and joy.
You have been so helpful with your video. normally I can watch anybody do something and do it myself. You explained this very well
Again thank you.
oh my gosh he is super cute...It will be neat to see how far he has come a year from now :)
I made two of your hats already and love them. I was wondering how much longer the ear flaps have to be on the child’s size in order to add Velcro and close the flaps under the chin? Thanks for sharing this!!
Vanessa you are awesome..This is by far the best tutorial I have come across for a fleece hat..You are an excellent teacher..Keep it up Sis..
Best instructional video i've found.. I am new to sewing and this made so much sense to me... going to be making beanies tomorrow, thanks
Thanks for the pattern. This is my first time trying one of your projects and I'm so excited. I haven't sewn ready wear in a while and have a question. Are you using 5/8" seams or 1/4"? I appreciate you help.
