@@gabrielmichael04 I don’t know man. For me, it was my friend who broke me the news only a minute after it dropped, but I saw videos or headlines shortly after saying what happened
I knew David when I was a clubbie for Trenton Thunder back when he was in AA in 2008. He was one of the nicest guys on the team. And we used to eat soup from the crockpot and do sudoku puzzles together and he was so humble and down to earth.
Part of the reason why is because he isn't one of those guys that is "the closer" wherever he goes. Saves are what gets relievers public recognition, and the last time he spent a full year as a teams closer was 2016. Robertson, Steve Cishek, Joaquin Benoit, and Tony Watson all had the same issue. Teams seem mostly pretty averse to having older pitchers as closers if they weren't already a closer the years prior.
Back in 2009 I was a young yankee fan witnessing the first and only (so far) yankee world series win. My favorite player was David Robertson specifically because he was just as good as Mariano in my eyes but not the classic basic player everyone said was their favorite. I was devastated when he left in 2016. In 2019 I started my time at, coincidentally, the university of Alabama, my first purchase was a David Robertson Bama Baseball Shirt. In 2020 when he was attempting to make his comeback, he threw a session at Sewell Thomas Stadium at the university with scouts in attendance so naturally, I attempted to get in and watch it. The closest I could see was from the student section hill in right field. After the session I tried to see if I could find him after, but I couldn't. The best thing I got was him pointing me out in right field wearing his jersey. Was one of the coolest moments of my life, he is a hall of famer in my eyes and I will always have a fantastic view of not only him as a player but as a person as well
Glad to see D-Rob get some well deserved recognition. As a Yankee fan he was as solid as they come and just a lovable dude altogether. Absolutely hate that we let go of him twice. One of the most solid and dependable relievers of the past 15 years with amazing longevity
As a die hard Yankee fan who followed the prospect blogs. RIP River Ave Blues. David "Houdini" Robertson was always the man you wanted in a bases loaded no puts jam. Random video idea. The 2006 Yankees draft class. So many great pitchers, stories and primes. Ian Kennedy, Joba Chamberlain, Dellin Betances, Mark Melancon and 17th round pick David Robertson.
I was just thinking about Robertson and his contributions to the Yankees the other day. Dude has been great for a longtime yet been a name that's remained under the radar for the most part
I remember watching David Robertson pitch for the Cubs and being genuinely confused as to how I had never heard of the guy for how consistently great of a reliever he was
He took over the closer role in 2014 after Mariano retired and was damn near perfect that year. We foolishly let him go and I was surpised he didn't become a stronghold as a closer anywhere else
dude i LOVED David Robertson on the white sox. he gave us a real reliable closer after struggling with Addison Reed and his unbelievable ability to give me a heart attack anytime he got to a 2-0 count
His 2011 was legendary. I wish the Yankees held onto him after 2014. One of my favorites to watch his whole career. Hope he continues to make his HOF case Edit: I was campaigning HARD for the Yankees to go after him at the trade deadline this year
David gave me a ball in Detroit when he played for Chicago wayyyyy back in the day. I’ve been a fan ever since, too nice of a dude with too much talent to not like him
For over this 15-year period, I've been struggling to consistently keep a job! I can't even use Covid-19 as an excuse anymore! As a Yankee fan, I'm grateful for his services to us where it all began and wish him and his family the best of luck especially when it's all over.
I remember using this guy as my setup man for Mo all the way back in MLB 11. Yeah, that old. Never let me down. Glad his career has been much of the same.
Dude's been paid $110,000,000 over his career. If he's even just a little bit upset over not getting recognition, well, .... god bless his little heart.
@@nich558 I was just going by what Baseball-Reference listed. Just checked and it now has him at $105 million. Also, I wasn't saying David Robertson was upset. I was just addressing the tone the OP started the video with. Not criticizing the OP, just trying to be funny. I'm sure DR is entirely happy and feels blessed. He has had an awesome career that millions can only dream of.
I think he only doesn't get talked about a lot by people who are casual fans or complete homers for their team. I think people who are just big baseball fans are well aware of how good he's been. Which for a reliever in today's world of a million no name relievers rotating through bullpens is pretty good
I've known how great he was since I saw him for the first time when I was a kid when he was pitching for the Yankees. Dude is and has always been ridiculous
Rewriting my Cubs All-Time Roster bullpen: Lee Smith, Craig Kimbrel, Ted Abernathy, Aroldis Chapman, Bruce Sutter and David Robertson. Maybe Yu Darvish as my swingman.
I played DiamondMind/Simnasium . . . a baseball simulation game, and David Robertson is/was highly valued. Not a super-star closer, but just as good statistically as per the video.
Baseball HOF is so so unforgiving but if Kimbrel gets in then Robertson definitely should. You have to give love to the other guys in the pen that aren’t closers.
I'm not saying he learned the cutter from Mariano Rivera, but I'm also not saying he didn't. On all seriousness super interesting career and honestly if he can have 3 or 4 more seasons of good production I think he has a real shot at being an HOF, in big part because the later he delay his retirement and give more time for old Baseball Writers of America to retire the higher his chances of joining, because even now he may already be a pretty interesting case.
For what it’s worth, when I try to think of relievers who have been consistent performers, and are not dominant closers, he’s like *the* guy I think of. One of the best non-closers bullpen arms of our time
Back then, I was surprised the Yankees didn’t resign him after 2014. Hope the Mariners sign him to a 1 yr deal, could help with a veteran presence. Especially in the latter innings.
Consultancy never gets as much love. The breakout guys and guys who have an insane season get talked and paid more from their 1 breakout season more often 💔❤️😕
Nolan Ryan played 27 years without winning a Cy Young even though he led in the big 3 categories numerous times. A guy that threw 7 no-no’s, has 300 wins and owns the career K record(which will NEVER be broken) doesnt have a Cy Young. Let that sink in….
I knew he was great back in 2009, but I’m also a Yankees fan. Yes, it is difficult to come out of Mariano’s shadow, but David forged his own path and that is what matters.
It's a pretty quintessential example of closers bias. In terms of his career footprint he's very close to the elite closers of this generation in Kimbril, Janson, and Chapman. All of them seem pretty likely to make the hall of fame, or at the very least get close, I doubt that Robertson will even crack 5% to stay on the ballet :/. Worst part is it's not even is fault that he doesn't have saves, he spent over 430 innings, that's half of his career, pitching behind either the hardest throwing player ever, or the GOAT.
Irrelevant, players who play 20 years will always make a lot of money its just another counting stat. Especially since he negotiates short term deals so his market value constantly updates to follow the upward trend of salaries. The idea that one of the best pitchers in the history of relievers is not being appreciated as such has nothing to do with money. If that were true, contract value above average would be a hall of fame consideration.
I don't see the case for him not being noticed. He probably deserved to be an all star more than once but that's the reliever's plight. For a guy at that position that's been on 8 different teams I'd say he's more recognized than you'd expect. Give the guy his flowers--they are certainly deserved--but "nobody notices" is some clickbait nonsense.
Players who are consistently good never get the credit that the guys who go from great to meh to great to bad do. Like Eddie Murray. Every year around .300 and 30 HR for a decade and a half. Barely anyone remembers him.
