Making a narrow hem on light fabric is one of those things that can really level up your sewing and make your garments look fab. Using a rolled hem foot can make this much easier and faster.

“If you are feeling like you need this for a dress you’re supposed to wear to a wedding tomorrow…”
So, I looked up this tutorial to help me hem my bridesmaid’s dress. For my friend’s wedding…tomorrow. I can’t tell you how hard I laughed. Thank you for posting this video! It was very insightful and thorough, and it added a lot of levity to my evening. 😂
Lolololol you are not the first person to tell me that! Have fun at the wedding!
Oh my GOD literally just that "line up the edge to the bar" thing absolutely changed the game for me!! Haven't seen that on any other tutorial and got a perfect hem first try (after many failed attempts before this tutorial obviously). Thank you!!
It does make all the difference! I'm so glad it helped. Thanks for watching❤️
Those are my exact thoughts Ané! I sewed a much better hem after watching Stephanie's video! I am so much more confident with using the rolled hem foot! Thanks Stephanie! You ROCK!! 🤓
Omg!!! Genius!!!! That's what I was doing wrong!!!!
Great video! Really good to follow along. I had to laugh when you said dont try using it for a dress you've made for a wedding the next day 😅 Exactly what i was doing, i did a couple of test runs and then hemmed successfully thanks to your instructions!
Another option to starting is to sew 3-4 stitches on your fabric without folding it over, just flat on the sewing machine bed. Then lift your pressure foot and needle, pull the fabric back, and use both of your thread tails to manipulate the fabric into the scroll. Once it’s in the scroll correctly, just position the fabric under the foot at the beginning of the seam. The fabric, in my experience, needs to cover the left toe of the foot as you sew forward.
These feet are amazing and provide wonderful results. The foot does the heavy lifting, but the preparation is key to success.
Generally speaking, the bigger the scroll, the heavier the fabric that they can handle. I use the 6 mm one for flannel, but I’d never use a 3 mm one for flannel.
It does take a bit of practice to get used to working with these types of feet, so test out on some 12-18 inch strips to learn.
You can also sometimes start on a scrap or leader before moving onto your hem. I find that works as it gives me a little feeding space before the real hem starts.
Almost any type of zig zag stitch will give a scalloped edge, especially if you adjust your tension and stitch length. I find the scallops more pronounced on knit fabrics than cotton.
The wide opening in your foot gives you some needle position options. Play with those in combination with various stitch designs or patterns for some attractive finishes.
One word of caution though, stitches that are stitched by moving forward and backward may not work because the hem behind the foot is already stitched down. Stitches that are executed from back to front will likely work best.
Have fun.
Thanks for posting this video.
Great advice! Thanks❤️
This tip was so helpful that I had to log in to let you know.
Thank you!
The 3 or 4 stitches and pulling the thread thru was how I initially learned.
That's a great insight!
Huge help with the awl. I have watched 10 different videos about this foot, and had a mess every time. Thanks to you showing how to poke the fabric all the way in, I tried again, and Voila! Rolled hem!
Wonderful! Good for you for persevering❤️
I never could figure out my rolled hem foot, so I’m glad I found this video! Thanks for the easy-to-follow tutorial and for making my projects go much quicker!
Hey Alex! I'm so glad I could help. Happy sewing❤️
Oh my god, I was making a Selkie dress, and I hand folded and hemmed it when I realised it was provided with my machine, I just screamed at myself like where was my brain. 😭
The tips given were amazing
You are the first person to get me to figure this out. I’ve literally been trying to accomplish this for years. Thanks a lot!!
Same here - never noticed that bar in there! x
Thank you so much. After an independent try I watched your video and achieved a rolled hem first time. I used the unpicker to encourage the fabric into the foot (ok I stabbed it). It worked a treat 😊
Oh that's awesome Catherine! Thanks for watching ♥️
Game changer had no idea you could use something other than a straight stitch. Thank you!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching❤️
There’s more than one rolled hemmed foot? 🤷♀️🙋♀️🤦♀️ Now I know!!! Thank you!!
The demonstration starts at 4:31 folks
I wish I read your comment, especially since it's the first one lol. Just bought a rolled hem foot, so going to try this tip and hopefully I get better luck.
thank youuu
I just sewed that on the first try.
I’ve sewn plenty of hems, with the standard foot (fold, iron, press, sew, repeat), but all the tutorials I’ve seen on these were so complicated that I didn’t really see the point… by the time I’d get it set up I could’ve gone through the whole routine I was used to.
The tip about the fabric matching the bar and pre folding the fabric made the difference. Thanks!
I'm so glad it worked for you! Happy sewing😁
This was a fantastic tutorial! Thank you for showing and explaining how the foot works. 15 min later I'm pretty happy with what my rolled hem is looking like. Thank you.
Awesome! Thanks Heather I'm so happy this was helpful🙂
Oh, I didn’t even know there are different sizes of rolled hem foot. No wonder I’m never successful using the 3 mm one I have. Thank you so much.
Your welcome Angel! Thanks for watching!
That's it 😊 following the little bar makes my zigzag hemline absolutely beautiful. Thanks
So helpful!!! Knowing about the bar is truly a game changer for me. I'm hemming some sheer 7 yd length curtains and always fight getting started. Using 2 or 3 stitches at the beginning and then bringing those thru the scroll is how I've been doing this for years but it was still a 2 or 3 try process to get started. Knowing about the bar has made all the difference in the world. Thanks! 😊
Oh this helped a bunch. I was questioning why I got the foot until watched this.
Thank you so much for this, I bought the feet but didn’t have a clue how to use them, you made it so clear and I think luck was on my side as the first time I tried it worked!!
That's amazing Ann! Good for you for trying something new!
Thank you for this. It’s been hit or miss with this foot so I’m glad to know that with more practice it will get better!
It will totally get better Leanne! Good luck ♥️
When you said that the first few stitches would be hidden, allowed me to get a rolled hem. I kept trying to start way back where the funnel is. Thanks for a clear explanation
I've watched several videos on the rolled hem foot and this one finally had the golden egg. Using my serger tweezers was a game changer. I was hemming a bridesmaid dress and it turned out beautifully. Thanks for much!
Happy to help! So glad you're dress turned out❤️
I’m a seasoned seamstress. I haven’t used one of these in a while so I want to make sure I have all the kinks worked out before I use it on my project!
Awesome! Good luck on your project! Thanks for watching❤️
And once again you hear from me - good job and reminder that there are quicker, simpler, and better results for those delicate summer fabrics that we wear so short a time!
Thanks Lavada ❤️
Thank you! I was struggling and gave up. I’ll get it out again and give it a go.
Good luck Rochelle!
Thank you for this! I just bought one of these and could not for the life of me work out how to feed it and after watching your vid I got in first go and finally hemmed that bridesmaid dress 👗
Hey way to go! Have fun at the wedding!
I knew there was a reason my machine came with these feet...lol...thanks for the great tutorial! I successfully sewed my first rolled hem. Now I just need to practice.
Good for you!
Best tutorial for the rolled gem foot I’ve seen! Thank you!!
Thanks Carrie ❤️
You sure make that look easy!
Lol don't worry, I had my turn of almost ripping my hair out.
@@StephanieRubletz yes, I believe it! I’ve tried before but could never figure it out, so thanks for your tutorial. I just found your site today. I’ve always wanted to make my own clothes.
Life changing! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you!!
That’s so helpful! I’d love to share this episode and your channel on an episode! It’s fantastic!!!! Thanks Stephanie xx
Wow thanks so much! That's very generous ♥️
Thank you for this tutorial! I was gifted a sewing machine by my mother and one of the accessories included was a rolled hem foot. Still getting the hang of it, but I do enjoy the learning process!
That's the great thing about sewing, you'll never run out of things to learn!
this is so helpful omg. i struggle with clean hems so badly, i always end up just leaving the bottom unfinished at the end of a project so this is a life saver!! thanks for the wonderful video
So happy to help! Thanks for watching ❤️
Great tutorial, Stephanie, thank you!
Your are welcome! Thanks for watching! ♥️
Thanks. I have one ,have used it once. Am now eager to give it another try.
Good luck Peggy!
I used my rolled hem foot for the first time thanks to your tutorial. And it was perfect. Thanks
Awesome! I'm so glad I could help. Thanks for watching ♥️
I’m glad I found you! You’re a great teacher. I’ve never done a rolled hem. No I think I have.
I'm glad you found too! Thanks for watching ❤️
I have first used rolled hems in very fine almost sheer crepe fabric. And I actually used sewing pins to gather the fabric around the cone and the guide and I use a pin to keep the start of the stitch in place, since it tends to unroll itself even if you press it. An awl is much easier for fabrics with more weight in them! Great video.
This video is AMAZING! As others have said, the bar tip is out of this world! Thank you! 🎉
Beautiful 💓 love your tutorials!
Thank you! ❤️
Wow, I just ordered mine yesterday and they are coming today. Can't wait to try them out. I wanted them to make those gauze baby blankets. I guess ill have to play with them a little bit first so I don't mess up the blankets. Thank you so, so much for demonstrating how to use them.
Oh cool! Good plan to practice first. Happy sewing!
I plan to use the 3 mm foot to sew miniature bedding. Thank you for the tutorial. ❤
Brilliant. This helped me so much, thank you!
Oh good! Glad to hear it! Happy sewing ♥️
The narrow foot you were asking about is designed for straight stitch /narrow rolled hem. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.
Thanks Jeanne! ❤️
Thanks a lot, Stephanie! Your tutorial is a gem. I know again how to do it, because I did it once upon a time together with my mom and meanwhile I completely forgot the tricks.
Sometimes I need a refresher of things I did way back. Happy sewing ❤️
thank you for showing and explaining Stephanie
You are welcome! Happy sewing❤️
Thank you, THANK YOU! I just made a perfect rolled hem!!!! Thanks again!
Super helpful!! Third video I tried and first time I could accomplish a rolled hem! Thank you!
That's fantastic! Good for you for sticking with it ♥️

You just saved my life. I was about to lose it trying to figure out how to start my hem!
If I had a nickel for everytime someone told me this was going to end their sanity. 🤣 Thanks for watching!
Got it working on my first try, thanks! The hems on my wedding dress are going to be perfect!
Great! Congrats♥️
This was the best demonstration and explanation that I found on RUclips! Thank you so much!
You have a great personality! Thank you for this
Thanks so much Kendra!
Not to be dramatic but YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE!!!
1:03 pm thank you for this video. I found everything I need to know about a rolled hem right here and also on your part two video on questions and answers. That’s what I needed.
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
I tried it and it was a success! Thanks for such a great tutorial!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching❤️
Straightforward instructions. Thanks for the tips. I wanted easier hems.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been struggling for years to decipher the directions included in my vintage Kenmore Sew-By-Color kit. I just started a project, sewing cat trap covers for TNRing feral/community cats, and using my hemmer foot is *really* going to cut down on the time it takes to make one. This is a huge help for me.
I'm so glad you found this helpful Bev! Good luck on your project!
Thank you so much!!! I inherited a machine from my mom with this foot and because of you I figured out how to use it! It looks so much nicer than when I press and pin by hand!! Thank you!!

So strange, a bunch of old coments just showed up in my app. Sorry for not responding sooner. Thanks so much for watching❤️

Well! This is going to be my first experience with a rolled hem. I have 4 dresses to hem for a upcoming wedding in May. Glad I have time to practice! Thank you :-)
That's so exciting! Good luck with your dresses!
So helpful, thank you!
I have had theses guys for over a year and the first time I tried it, I was like hell no! The fabric was refusing to get into the groove, but thanks to you I just might try it again.
Awesome! Good luck!
This helped so much! Thank you!
Thanks Issi, happy to help❤️
Oh my goodness! I needed this tutorial 2 days ago lol. I gave up on the rolled hem foot!! I’ll go back now and practice 😁
Oh don't give up! You'll get it❤️
Great video, thank you! I didn’t realize you could use a special foot for a sewing machine for a rolled hem. …thought I had to use my serger :) I can’t wait to try this!
Thanks so much for watching❤️
Great video, thank you!! Rolled hemmer feet make me nervous, after seeing your tutorial I feel like I can probably make it work...
Thanks so much for watching! Good luck!
Thank you!! I know what l was doing incorrectly now. Looking forward to playing with this foot now:)
I so relate to you. I subscribed because I need to know all the things from you. Ive been sewing for many decades but a girl can still try new things with the help of a friend!
Hey thanks for watching! My favorite thing about sewing is that there is always something else to learn.
Thank you! You made that so easy
Kristen mentioned your channel. I'm so glad she did! I've subscribed and I'll be back for more tutorials.
Isn't she just wonderful? I'm so glad she sent you my way.
After 3 hours trying I finally sew about 6cm of rolled hem!
Victory!!!! It'll get easier!
that's me right now LMAO it makes me want to bang my head in a wall out of frustration but I'm going to succeed!!!!!
@@LS-vq2or Interesting. I have access to a Feiyue machine and a Brother. The Feiyue is hard but probably OK if you practise and acquire the skills. The Brother: no way; doesn't even make the stitches. No idea why but I'd defy anyone to do this on our family's Brother!
Thanks for the tutorial got it on second try!
Awesome! Way to go👏
Interesting thanks. This looks like it would work well for hemming a scarf or filmsy fabric. I have a foot that came with my machine and haven't tried them all yet. Didnt know they came in different widths either.
Yes! They are great fort thin fabrics. Thanks so much for watching!
I’m a beginner here and i will try this one! Thanks!
Good luck Dawn!
Tried this and it worked 🎉
Thank you!!! Got to try mine out now!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching❤️
WOW!!! Thank you🔥You really explained it the best way out of all the videos I’ve watched🤗
Awesome! Happy to help❤️
I love your personality. Thank you for the help😄

Hello. Never used a rolled hem foot before. This will be my first attempt in using it. I am making an 18th century Fichu for my gown to wear at a 100TH Anniversary party for the DAR...Daughter's of the American Revolution organization. Thanx so much for the video and it has helped me to figure out many different things. Didn't know there were so many different sizes.
I have about 20 different "feet" for my singer sewing machine. I've used maybe 5. Lol.
Thanx again!
Wow that sounds like an amazing project! Good for you!
This is fantastic. I avoid doing rolled hems and you have inspired me to take up the challenge. Thank you. Stay safe and well Lynne
Fantastic! Good luck Lynne and keep well ♥️
This is a spot on instructional! I tried it and it worked beautifully. You're right, it'll take some practice to make it perfect. Thank you for your expertise. Subscribed!
Thanks so much Kathy! I'm happy to help.
Great one there! Thank you Ms Stephanie 💝
Thanks for watching Tina ❤️
This is so helpful. And what a cute idea to make that puckered scallop. I recreate vintage style clothes for myself and that will be cute on a collar or something
Oh that will be great on a collar! Happy sewing!
You are relatable , subscribed!
Thanks so much❤️
Thank you so much for explaining the rolled hem foot in a easy to understand way. I purchased a presser foot set from an online company, and they offered such minimal support and assistance, I was very upset. Plus the rolled hem foot I got was a 3mm, I guess, with the tiniest bar to feed the fabric under, that it simply is not catching the fabric and therefore not working for me. I am going to look at your suggested feet and use your affiliate link. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Worked great - thank you!!
Glad it worked Andrea! Happy sewing❤️
Thank you for this tutorial. I found you via The Dahlia Sew-ciety. She highly recommended you and I think she was correct in doing so! Thanks. I am in Chicago under a stay at home order so I will be sewing as much as I can.
Thanks Peggy! Isn't Kristin at Dahlia wonderful?!
Ty,I’ll go try this out.
Awesome! Good luck!
Never used one before but this helped me "get it".
Nice demo thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the bar information (5:39). I think it is the key and the secret to success although nobody has mentioned it. You are the first one!
Thou are so right. Understanding that made all the difference for me. Thanks for watching.
thanks, nice demo
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
I’m about to pull my hair out, but I need this method to work. With your video it is easiest to try to follow and you make good visibility of what you are doing. I am going to keep watching and trying. 😢
Good luck! I know it can be so frustrating in the beginning❤️
Thank you so much, this was so helpful !
I'm glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching❤️
Thank you! Very helpful.
I am (hehe) making a dress for a wedding - a couple of weeks away. This was FABULOUS!
Thanks so much! Have fun at the wedding!
OMG! This is so helpful! Ive been struggling for the past 5 hours trying to hem my top🤣 I wish I watched this video first
I'm so happy to help! Happy sewing❤️
thank you, thank you, thank you! rolled hem foot newbie here and on sheer iridescent nylon special occasion fabric (it's own special kind of hell) to boot. the bernina instructions that came with my new yet vintage rolled hem foot didn't help nor did a tutorial i found from bernina online. your tutorial, however, a lifesaver! for me, your way of pre-folding the seam to start it, stitch, then backstitching before starting that original pre-folded seam on the foot tunnel was a game changer! (especially compared to the original foot instructions.) also, your tip of helping "pre-fold" the upcoming fabric feeding into the foot made all the difference in the world, too. xo - dd
Yay! I'm so happy I could help. (And yes that fabric is hellish lol) happy sewing!
