- Trail magazine and the British Mountaineering Council present Britain's Mountain Challenges.
In this video Trail magazine's Dan Aspel tackles Jack’s Rake, an ever-popular slanting scramble in the heart of one of the Lake District’s most appealing valleys. To find it yourself you’re setting your sights on Langdale (just a short drive from Ambleside) from which you’ll hike up to the cool waters of Stickle Tarn. Once here the route leaps right out at you, as it cuts across the face of Pavey Ark, the imposing wall of rock that dominates the skyline from this point.
Although technically a Grade 1 scramble, this is not a route to be underestimated. The ascent is steep from the off and the growing sense of exposure to your left-hand side as you climb upward can be unnerving for the inexperienced. The rock is often wet and slippery too, meaning that slow, steady and secure progress is essential. Because of this and the route’s enduring popularity there are slips, accidents and even fatalities here every year - so caution is advised at all times. However, approach Jack’s Rake safely and you’ll discover a natural scrambling line of supreme mountain drama and consistent interest. This is a deservedly celebrated route.

Did this in 2007 when i was 70 and waiting foe prostate operation the next week. Enjoyable climb. Want to do it when i am 100 and have party on top.Derek
I’m just looking at an old photo of me on Jack’s rake from 1987. I still remember it well. Sheer adrenaline.
My first big outdoor climb was up Pavey's Ark and then down Jack's Rake on a beautiful summers day in July 2006.
I did this a number of times as a small boy (around 9 or 10). I honestly don't remember all the scrambling. The only thing that stuck in my mind was the exposed bit you have to more or less step across. Anyway. Nearly 40 years ago, and just past those ultra-dangerous times known as the 1970's - how did any of us make it through!!?? - and memory fades. I remember it was one of my favourites, too. The way small boys think, or thought in those days at least.
Jack's rake put me off scrambling for life.
The last bit where you need to climb onto a sloped piece of flat rock with hardly any finger holds and one slip your off was the nail in the coffin.
I never realised how much I suffer from exposure until I did Jack's rake
Did it today. That sloping piece was tough!
My first fell walk aged 16.
No money for kit so i wore my cycling cape, pacamac and wellies in the relentless rain.
Epic and soaked.
Nice balance of commentary and views. Nice balance between being cautiously realistic and bigging the route up.👍
I did this myself today first time ever climbing don’t get me wrong. It was extremely high and once I committed, I could not return back. I definitely will not do it again but overall great experience.
Completed this for the first time last Saturday. Fantastic scramble with stunning views. Will be doing it again. Quite challenging in places and not for the faint hearted.
Done this yesterday in wet weather conditions and was s**ting myself. Not bad for a first time scramble but would definitely recommend dry weather as the wet rock is treacherous.
Did this scramble about 13 years ago. Found the start easy, reached half way at tree point with great relief. Next section bit more scrambley and technical yet less exposed. Was happy reaching the summit. Went up in a pair, would not have liked to tackle it on my own! View from top was awesome and well worth the effort.
did this on my own and wish i has someone there to discuss it with. about half way up i was pretty dam scared on the exposed ledge with the exposed scramble crux at the end of it! had a sit down for 10 minutes before i had to courage to carry on!
Never again. Done it today. So scary
Can't beat Jack's Rake - brilliant scramble
It's a good scramble alright but there are many better scrambles in the Lake District. Many better ones in the Langdales for that matter.
@@charliepeebles looking for a good scramble in the lakes, which ones can you recommend over Jack's Rake? Cheers.
Jimbly Wotsits pinnacle ridge
Done it few weeks bk I'd rate that as a 2 myself.. 2 in places 1 in others.. Very enjoyable tho, had a swim in stickle tarn after it.. Was an amazing day
Jacks Rake is a great scramble I did this the start of last month and threw Bowfell onto the walk too. Video is on my profile here 😊
Did it in scouts at probably around thirteen. In all honesty, scared the shit out of me
we went mountain biking in the lakes a few years ago and on the last day of our stay we opted for this climb instead of riding , i thought ok might be fun, but on the difficult sections I felt really uncomfortable ...but i had two experienced climbers with us who guided me up, got to say the feeling of elation at the top was fantastic
Done this couple months ago ...while you are very exposed just always have 3 points of contact at all times , I found it quite easy & in the wet conditions but it is dangerous so just take you're time
excellent excellent video
I’m trying to build up my skill and confidence to take on Jacks Rake next year. I’ll probably go mid wk and wild camp near by so I can try it out early in good conditions when it’s not to busy 🤞going to try some smaller scrambles 1st. Any good suggestions?
Good quality video
From experience I'd recommend doing it without a heavy backpack. It's great but slightly nerve wracking when you feel your bag wanting to pull you over the side.
A great climb, I did it early this year in the snow :D
Did the on my tod a few years ago. Fkin shit myself! Had yo have a word with myself to carry on and not turn back near the top.
I'm heading there next month. Gulp! I've got a feeling I'll chicken out.
I have always avoided Jacks rake because I can't cope with the exposure to the fall. I have not gone anywhere near it because I know if I got to the bottom of it my competitive nature would kick in and I'd have to give it a go.
Did you chicken out?
@@toomuch9762 I’m afraid I did. I wanted to take the challenge but didn’t fancy being half way up with no room at all for error. We watched a couple of teenagers do it pretty straightforwardly though.
@@geoffdillon4637 happened me one day on a climb i backed out from. Next thing i know a 12yr old kid walks past with her parents and they basically flew up it. 😂😂😂 i was quite embarrassed with myself
Cracking day out, not the best in the wet!
Jake's rake he was with the snowman on Mount Everest what happened to that shall we call in the Marshall?😂
RAKE IN THE LAKE
I did this today and can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed by it, enjoyed it but didn’t want it to end. The worst part was seeing the 2 dead sheep about half way up 😔 the sight and smell was awful!
I did it yesterday as well, the sheep lying in the path were quite eerie.
Should wear a helmet, it can be a busy route and people can dislodge rocks
