I spoke to him regularly in the 1980s when I thought he was lonely and just wanted to talk to a fellow officer.Very nice old boy.

There is a reason why Hap Arnold said this was “ England's Lindberg” Not for any long distance accomplishments, but simply because of his acumen and ability to reach every level of both Civilian and Military Government. Unfortunately; he like his “America First” namesake ruffled one to many feathers. In fact WC Dickson clipped so many wings that there at times were no more desks to fly. Certainly he was born with the “Nelson Touch”. I have been on HMS Victory when our ship was in Portsmouth in 1982. And in 1990 on the way to the gulf, I was able to tour “The Rock” The real history of what happened within the world wars, is not exactly told through the most recent “bestseller list”. It is passed down to those who were “there”. And that is all that matters; for that is the history that reaches the “movers and shakers”, even if one doesn't necessarily find their destiny met at the “Pillars of Hercules”.
Informally speaking; as someone who was “Naval Air”, I have a lot to share with my veteran colleagues with regard to the unofficial acronym of RNAS....”Really Not A Sailor”
I thought of ordering “Splice the Mainbrace” after hearing this.
