- At City Year, we believe that every child has the potential to succeed.
At the same time, we recognize that many children face obstacles that interfere with their ability to arrive at school every day ready to learn. More than 10 million children live in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty and are more than two times more likely to face adverse childhood experiences, including trauma and toxic stress. Nationally, students in these circumstances graduate high school at rates that are nearly 22 percentage points lower than their middle- and upper income peers.
Research shows that providing students with positive caring adult relationships at school, individualized academic supports and opportunities to develop social-emotional skills like self-management, optimistic thinking and decision making can keep students on track to high school graduation and adult success. Despite the often heroic efforts of teachers and administrators, schools in high poverty communities require additional capacity to provide students with the skills they need to become engaged citizens and productive members of the labor force.
At City Year, we partner with high need schools to help bridge the gap between what their students need and what schools are designed and resourced to provide. In doing so, we’re helping students succeed in school and in life.

I'e never appreciated RUclips as much as I do right now as it affords me the opportunity to watch all the videos of Amanda Gorman. How on earth had I never heard of her??!! Oh my God she is SO on fire, words can't describe the excitement, awe and joy that I feel thinking about what the future holds for her. She'll certainly have my vote in 2036 if she holds firm to her pledge of running for President. God's speed Amanda, we're with you.
I love her poems read, she is an inspiration. I would live to read her books and yes she is truly my fan. Such knowledge of experience and the feel of life in her speech is excellently conveyed and expressed. I love her!

Ronald, I couldn't agree more, she is SO incredible and that's exactly what "they" don't like. She transcends race, gender and nationality, she shows us what the best of humanity could be like; inclusive, sharing, uplifting for all with malice towards none. Jill Biden is a teacher by trade, of course. Listening to Amanda Gorman speak, be that her poems, lectures or interviews, that connection becomes rather obvious somewhat instantly. A great communicator.
Where she found this amazing young lady must be a story in itself. I write poetry also but keep my poems in a binder at home. I understand the emotion and the words slowly forming inside the head to help explain part of the world and how it is tied to each of us. Continue to let the words flow. I cannot believe that prior to the inauguration, I was completely unaware of this amazing woman.
I find it distressing that most of her You Tube videos have had the comments section turned off....... I can only assume that sadly, she has been exposed to abusive comments from the dregs of society since her appearance on the 20th.
All I can say is........ Listen to this Voice, it is I hope the voice of our future!

I used to read and even recite poetry as a kid! It was a place where I always found happiness. Then I became and adult and forgot about it... Now I’m 42 years old, and Amanda Gorman is inspiring me to get back into it and do what I love! @Sista Righteous , I know where you're coming from.. however when I listen to Amanda, my admiration is almost instant. It doesn't even register the fact nor has it got anything to do with her colour. To me she's a beautiful young lady, very insightful with her poetry, who shared a beautiful moment during the inauguration with the world.
Of course I register she is black. I also know when she bleeds, her blood is red, just like mine and yours... I hope you understand I do not disregard her struggles to get to where she is today or that in America, so many persons of colour are being marginalised and stigmatised.
I dont know why colour is progressively becoming such an ugly divisive social and political issue in America and other parts of the world. Could it be insecurity on the part of other races (or inverse superiorty)?
