One thing about this game that I think goes slightly unappreciated is the SOUND. Like when a rival car is next to you, you can hear their engine and the driver going through the gears. Furthermore, you can hear exactly WHAT SIDE of you they are... you can hear them swerving back from left to right trying to pass you. And each car has a unique sound too. If its a Porsche chasing you, you can tell. If its a Lambo, you can tell. The roar of the Ferrari, the whine of the Aston Martin, the growl of the Pontiac Firebird... You can tell the difference for them all without looking behind you. Absolutely amazing. Especially for a game in 2001. You don't get that with games TODAY.

so true, i just buy today a PSONE Back with 2 joystick, 2 memoryCard, and Driving steer + 130 original games for just 75€. I Cannot handle no more with new gen games- graphics amazing but no LIVE Action. Thnxs for the description i can feel the passion u describe in it.

In my opinion this is the best NFS ever made judging on list of cars,design of tracks,music,Secrets(even that yes) and soulfulness and atmosphere in general.Good old times,best of memories.miss 90s.

Produced in 1999, but still the best NFS i'd play. Beats the new episodes. Good soundtrack from Rom Di Prisco and Saki Kaskas and good cars.

some serious nostalgia here. so many memories just chilling around the map exploring while listening to the really chilled out music. then playing split screen and hiding the cop car around the map waiting for the other one to follow, good times.

Linkinator01 oh cause tha PC version overall was better (if tha hardware done right) not only 4 graphics, but it included NFS3 tracks as well as a cockpit view, and convertible option which never existed in tha PS1 version! but hey tha PS1 is a classic but there's no beatin' tha PC version
They actually are worse on a real PlayStation, this is running on a emulator with HD upscale and smoothing filters.
This game remembers many moments of infance playing this . I remember my moment when i was a kid and just was playing this all the time in Hot Pursuit mode :) And the soundtracks are nice , the best game ever!

This game and the intro in particular is the reason i fell in love with the Corvette. Such a beautiful car.

Uff, año 2000, viernes después de escuela, horas de duelos jugando esto, viendo las repeticiones, comentando quién lo había hecho mejor. Desde ahí nació mi amor por McLaren, realmente en las tardes en el colegio lo único que pensaba al salir era que tenía que desbloquear el F1, era mi objetivo máximo en la vida. Esa velocidad, ese sonido, sentía que horas y horas de juego por fin habían tenido su fruto. No como ahora en donde no se premia la habilidad sino el tener tarjeta de crédito.
Y ni hablar de poder jugar con los amigos a pantalla dividida, tiempos hermosos. Realmente hermosos.

One of the greatest racing games ever, no doubt. I still sometimes play it on my PS3. Fully upgraded Ferrari F50 is the best car. My best time on Celtic Ruins is 1:25.34 with the F50 ...try and beat that.
I believe that the only bad thing about this game is the frame rate that's it

This was one of my favorite NFS games. I played it on PC with a mod of user-made cars. One of them was the General Lee (a 1969 Dodge Charger) from The Dukes of Hazzard, and it had super-high stats. The car could go insanely fast but handled like a dream even at high speeds. There was one track with a covered bridge spanning a river, and there's a slight bump in the road just before it. If you came out of the corner with enough speed in the General Lee you could get elevation off the bump and easily jump right over the bridge. Fun times.

on the psx the sounds of the car are much better at on the pc-version. I loved to drive the McLaren, the sound was awesome. The Camaro was also nice with the engine sound :D

john200715 Double the number of cars, pick the cars that were in this game and replace with modern equivalents, the extra ones would be in the same category (e.g. BMW Z4 and Mercedes SLK 55, + two other roadsters).
Also add some f*ing rock songs because that's how ALL early NFS soundtracks were: Half electronic/techno, half rock. I don't like electronic, but it's ok for it to be in the game because many DO like, and the same goes to rock. You don't like? Well, I do.
...and also have modifications that affect the car both visually and in performance. And, just as a fun bonus, bring back the cheat codes to drive traffic cars from NFS II. And have events for them, separated by their performance.

The car sounds in the PS1 version are infinitely better and more realistic than the PC version. Luckily, I have the PS1 version too. I was disappointed with the PC version, and there aren't even any audio downloads you can get to fix it.
My favorite NFS of all time (both PS and PC). So unappreciated.
Second is Porsche Unleashed. (I only ever played the PS1 version of P.U)

I would love to see a new NFS on current-gen systems that include old classic tracks, like Celtic Ruins and Dolphin Cove from High Stakes and Rocky Pass and Hometown from NFS 3, and others.

the graphics is very good for a PSOne game.
because its emulated on pc, trust me, psone had shitty graphics(well best for the time, but not now) its just maybe ur nostalgia feeling

Supongo que tienes razón que en un simulador los coches dan brincos por allí mientras los policías los siguen por monza por tomar un atajo. Alguna vez escuchaste que es Sim racing pues ahora si bebe o tal vez un grid ? sabes la diferencia de esos con mario kart?.
