I'm guessing much like how Tony the BlackCriticGuy described The Darkness with Kevin Bacon, this is a movie that pretty much no one even heard of and cared about till The Internet.
You know, I think this movie could have worked as a short film reminiscent to Looney Tunes. Same concept, just have the animals trying to get rid of Crusoe off their island. Throw in a lot of slapstick and silly antics and it could have been a decent and entertaining short film.
The parrot looks like a ripoff of Blu from "Rio". The beak size, the eye animations, the way he flies/walks, even the way his mouth moves when he talks makes me think of Blu.
Oh my god, the parrot is even named Mac, like the boy from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Blue is the brainchild of Mac in that show. That is so weird! 😆
My Predictions for the rest of the animated films this year: Storks- Looks surprisingly good. Story seems original, fun, and emotional. Trolls- Looks cute and colorful, but predictable and only made for little kids. Moana-Looks like a future Disney classic. Although I think it won't top Zootopia. Sing- Looks interesting and fun, but otherwise just ok. I don't think it will top Pets.
This movie has parallels to The Magic Voyage. While The Magic Voyage is based off history, (Christopher Columbus) The Wild Life is based off a novel; let me put it this way... they both star talking animals and have little to do with their respective stories.
I remember going to see Kubo in theaters and the preview for this just made me baffled at how something of this manner would be released theatrically, It looks like something you'd see crammed inside of a Redbox as filler
I wonder how people felt when the rugrats movie trailer was in theater in 98 with poop jokes. I love the movie because I grew up with the series but without that context I bet as adults it would be baffling lol
This reminds me of a weird blend of "The Wild," with a similar animation style to "Despereux." At least it's animation is... pleasant. It's not too creative or impressive, but it does look quite nice and realistic. Animat described it perfectly.
As someone who had to read Robinson Crusoe in college, this looks like ass. The animation looks stunning, yes, but RC is a pretty damn serious and dreary book. Not a comedy intended for kids. (the book is boring too, though).
I just finished reading Robinson Crusoe for my British Literature class and when you said 'Crusoe' and I saw the goat and the parrot, Sound of Silence by Disturbed started playing in my head.
Thank goodness my family chose kubo over this.... Thing... Well either this or we would have watched nine lives... Thank goodness for rotten tomato for saving our lives XD
If you watch the trailer for this movie, you can see like 10 3D moments. When the trailer was playing in the cinema I took my glasses off because it hurt my eyes.
I've never heard of this movie until just a few days ago, only seeing a commercial of it on CN, so either the marketing sucks or they really just don't care.
Best 6- Ice Age Collision Course 5- Kung Fu Panda 3 4- Secret Life of Pets 3- Finding Dory 2- Kubo and two strings 1- Zootopia Honorable mention Angry Birds and Storks Worst 4- Wild Life 3- Sausage Party 2- Ratchet and Clank 1- Norm of the North
I wonder if this movie would be any better if it were only six minutes long? I mean, I remember seeing the trailer and thinking that it looks like something that'd be more at home as a short, not a feature film.
I didn't even know about this movie until last week when I saw a commercial on TV. I honestly couldn't believe it said "in theaters" because it looks like a cheap straight to dvd film. But then again if Norm of the North can be on the big screen I guess literally anything can be nowadays....
'The Wild Life' is probably the most generic title for a talking animals flick I've ever heard. Then again, the title in my country 'Robinson Corusoe' isn't much more exciting...
When I watched this movie on the Internet, I felt more like this movie WAS on direct-to-DVD and never in theaters. I do agree with Animat that this movie should have played on DVDs and should not have been put in theaters, but I can still remember more of what I saw than Animat apparently did. I remember that I looked at the voice cast before I started watching, and thus a couple of voices sounded familiar, or I just took comfort in the fact that these actors got some child-actor time in other animation projects. I also remember how difficult it was to decide who to agree with in the arguments and hating May for being so cruel to Mal. Also, when Animat mentioned "low-brow humor" it sounded like there was going to be toilet humor, but I was surprised to see that even the low-brow humor was "tame", with no mentions of the toilet words at all. Yes, there are a few things I have difficulty remembering, but there are more things I do remember than don't. So, do I think this movie should have played in theaters? No. Do I plan on watching this movie multiple times in the future? No. But do I think this movie could be remembered by a couple of people? Yes.
My prediction for the list: Best: 5. Sausage Party 4. Kung-Fu Panda 3 3. Finding Dory 2. Kubo and the 2 Strings 1. Zootopia Worst: 5. The Angry Birds Movie 4. The Ratchet and Clank Movie 3. Ice Age: Collision Course 2. The Wild Life 1. Norm of the North
5:40-5:53 Speaking of which, did you know that the Aniamtion studio behind this film is the same one who did Fly Me to the Moon, a 3D attraction? In fact, that animation studio actually specializes in 4D films, so that would explain the 3D gimmicks you were explaining.
Funny thing is in my country it’s actually called robinson crusoe I know I haven’t seen the 2016 remake I was more interested in the angry birds movie but it is true that it’s called Robinson Crusoe in my country
Oh...because of the font and generic title, I didn't even realize this was its own movie. I lumped this and Disney's The Wild together in the same bland blob.
Since you deemed The Wild Life to be the most boring animated film you’ve ever seen, I would expect this to be a Studio Ghibli film, so that slice of life island adventure with Robinson Crusoe and the animals would’ve felt like childhood and we would’ve have stunning 2D animated visuals to immerse the viewer.
This was one of those rare instances where I could tell that this movie wasn't going to be anything special just from the advertising. It really didn't give us much to go on and the characters seemed really one note and unfortunately that does look to be the case. I'm happy you watched this film so we could stay away.
My ratings: Story - 2/10 (Very predictable, dull, and it just broke loose not even 30 minutes in.) Animation - 5/10 (Quite choppy, cheap 3D effects, and overall failed to be like Rio.) Characters - 1/10 (I had the exact same issue you had. On top of that, the voice acting is so annoying that it makes the voice acting in the Chipmunks films seem tolerable.) The Wild Life - 2.5/10 REJECTED (At this point, I have fingers crossed that this won't be 2013 repeated...)
Oh, this movie, I see the poster for this film at my local train station earlier this year but I thought that no one would have bothered to see this film (It was between Kung Fu Panda 3, Deadpool, Batman v Superman and Zootropolis's releases)
I think the reason we have four seals of approval, (If you count Anomalisa) and four seals of garbage is because of how many animated films came out this year, 18.
5:28- Armadillo? I'm pretty sure the animal you just mentioned was actually a pangolin. But, since both animals are quite similar, and not a lot of people who are into zoology know what a pangolin is in the first place, I guess you're excused.
The Wild Life aka {Robinson Crusoe} Getting a wide Release and not Other European animated movies like Song of the sea and April and the Extraordinary world just shows how unfair this life can be.
Compared to all the other animated movies this year, even Norm of the North, this one didn't look interesting to me in the slightest. To me, I think a boring movie is worse than a movie that actually is legitimately bad, since people are at least willing to talk about the films that actually WERE bad, because with a boring movie, there's nothing there is to talk about. If I do want to watch a film with talking animals, I'd watch Zootopia or Kung Fu Panda 3 again. I do wonder if there are any better adaptations of Robinson Crusoe out there, probably none that are animated though (unless there's some obscure anime adaptation of it I don't know of), but they're all probably better than this is. Only four more animated films this year, Storks, Trolls, Moana, and Sing. Let's see how this year wraps up, because this has actually been a rather fun year in animation. Moana is probably the one I look forward to more, not simply because it looks amazing or that it's a Disney film, but also because it's pretty much one of the few animated films this year with a primarily human cast, which will certainly be a breath of fresh air from all the talking animal films we've been getting so far.

Hollywood would rather scrape the bottom of the barrel for existing ideas than give us new ones. There have been so many book to movie adaptions over the years, it makes me wonder how long will it be before they run out of books to make movies out of.? What's next, are they going to look into the obscure books that not a lot of people know off? Books like Hey, Al perhaps? Or maybe they'll make a Australian movie franchise out of the weird as heck Gizmo books?
Charisma Bros Poking at how your opinion is different from the general consensus, which is fine as long as you have solid reasons for supporting your list and acknowledging why other people would disagree with you.
Hey Carmelo here yea I did the voice Colin metzger! But your right. The movie played it safe there was a lot Left on the cutting room floor That was actually funny! Anyway good video!
I'm really surprised you reviewed this movie. When this film came out in the UK it was seen as one of those terrible January movies and no one spoke or even watched it. So that's why i'm surprised a few people have reviewed the movie.
It'd be a ripoff of a ripoff then. Pretty sure The Wild was a Madagascar ripoff, as I saw it when I was a little younger. It wasn't that bad, but not the best thing ever either. Only way I knew about the wild life was from a trailer before Kubo, and a poster that was in the theater. I knew this movie was gonna suck anyway. It just looked like a straight to DVD movie, and it seems to have the quality of one.
5:47 XD great use of the Muppet Vision 3-D audiotrack. How did you get that? What makes the "3-D" worse is that our theater did not, I repeat, NOT get a 3-D glasses version of the movie. that was the dumbest move on the creators part.
Animat, would you review 'Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart'? I know its strait to DVD, but I absolutely love it! It's up there as one of my favorite movies ever, but almost no one ever talks about it. The only bad thing is the lip syncing, but it was originally in French.
All I knew about this before watching the review was talking animals on an island with a guy who looks like Guybrush Threepwood but without any personality.
I remember seeing the trailer when I went to see kubo and the two strings....the only reason I remember this movie is because of your review

Or do an honest to god adaption.
Billy Barnett True, that could work too.
Eli Copperman Me too. I agreed with you my friend.
Wait what makes this movie boring?
The parrot looks like a ripoff of Blu from "Rio". The beak size, the eye animations, the way he flies/walks, even the way his mouth moves when he talks makes me think of Blu.
Oh my god, the parrot is even named Mac, like the boy from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Blue is the brainchild of Mac in that show. That is so weird! 😆
Oh cool. Blu and jewel appearing in every f..king movie. Why am I obsessed with that f..king duo.
My grandma gave my brother a choice of Pete's Dragon, Kubo and the Two Strings, or The Wild Life. Guess what he chose. The Wild Life.
Why the wildlife out of all things???????
Fool.
Kubo and the two strings is much, much, much better than the wild life.
Why did you chose wild life!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
@ELIJAH PRISSEL
My dad loved kubo
When you mentioned Pete’s Dragon, are you referring to the 1977 movie or the 2016 reboot?
I knew this would get the AniMat Seal of Garbage from a throwing distance.
Same here.
Never even heard of this movie.
It's fine, nobody has.
GOOD.
Nobody has and nobody will.
Yup no one has EVER
i did lol

This looks like the film that should have gone straight to Netflix instead of The Little Prince.
Shut Up , This Film is better than Star War Crap
I thought i was the only one that hated Star Wars
Looks like Norm of the North has a competitor
I remember going to see Kubo in theaters and the preview for this just made me baffled at how something of this manner would be released theatrically, It looks like something you'd see crammed inside of a Redbox as filler

Brittany Illumination Ent. Lover Davis Yeah you are lucky.
The Wild Life: It is anything *but*.
Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue
I'm not gonna watch this piece of crap
Neither should you.

Apparently this movie is from Norm of The North creators.....yeah.
The human character (his name slipped my mind) and his dog remind me of Tintin and Snowy. Maybe it's the character design...I dunno.
Why are there so many movies about animals this year?
2016: the year of furries
idk
Animals are interest to children that's why you see so many films aimed at children with them
I blame Zootopia's Success that we're getting a lot of movies about animals as well as Animal-Human Hybrids
Here is a better question, why are so many straight to DVD movies being released in theaters?
That food tin is called a bento box, you make special lunches and put them in separate compartments in the box
Looks like something I would find in a bargain bin at a Walmart.

In México they call these "Las locuras de Robinson Crusoe" "The Crazy Adventures of Robinson crusoe".
I have seen trailers for this movie in theaters but I'm glad I never got to see it. Your review pretty much sums up my thoughts. :)

That’s what I call a Madagascar ripoff with humans!

Not a good year for James Arnold Taylor
+Billy Barnett Ratchet & Clank wasn't that bad. It doesn't deserve the hate it got. Trust me, Rotten Tomatoes is now a b*tch.
Richie Osborn The marketing was poor, and they gave it to rainmaker instead of Sony Animation for some reason.
I went to see Moana yesterday and my theater still showed the trailer for this film.
The first time I watched this, I thought that it was a rip-off of a Blue Sky film, mostly because of the design.

The Wild Life is boring? Sure, it's primitive, but Madagascar pulls off the "wild" part well. At least it's not new Norm of the North...
Compared to all the other animated movies this year, even Norm of the North, this one didn't look interesting to me in the slightest.
