    Tim does Q&A with the people at New Hope Church after his talk on Genesis that morning.
    -----
    Genesis provokes more questions, debates and doubts than any book in the Bible. To really understand the story, we have to step back from our preconceived notions and read it through the lens of the original audience. At its heart, Genesis is about a God who makes gardens out of chaos and calls us to do the same. Understanding Genesis will help us understand the rest of the Bible.

    What I appreciate about Tim is his simple honesty. With it he revealed a simple truth. Bible is written to answer the right and relevant questions. Our science questions are very local and insignificant queries in the grand scheme of space and time. I can understand children asking questions, but at some point we need to grow up and mature.

    Let's not forget that these arguments have been elevated to a relavent importance because of the narrative/ discussion surrounding these beliefs. To the degree that the framework of a belief system is under attack because of these arguments. And yes, keep the main thing the main thing. But, realize, in many areas, these matters have become the main thing

    I was thinking when Jesus said and I'm probably not gona quote this right, but "when two are gathered in my name you have a church" from that it seems, to arrive at the truth, it requires two people to engage with each other, you can't lean on your own understanding, but using both you and the person your talking or listening tos understanding, you can meet in the middle at true understanding, and you both leave with a benefit as wisdom is the treasure, where physical transactions take place one side is always taking more than they are giving, even money doesn't solve that imbalance

    Personally I like to think dinosaurs don't get mentioned because Humans didn't need to know that. God is not ignorant to how weak humans will be. Many of us struggle to remember what we had for breakfast. You really want to tote around scrolls from God explaining why the grass is green

      Well said!
      One could argue that they were mentioned in Job- both Leviathan (who appears to be one of the large sauropod dinosaurs) and Behemoth. They wouldn't have been called by the name 'dinosaur,' as that word didn't exist until a few hundred years ago- but I think they are mentioned under the names they had then.
      Beyond that, though, they go unmentioned for the same reasons Tigers, Kangaroos, and Marmosets do... not because they didn't exist then, but simply because none of the accounts in the Bible featured events in which it would have been relevant to mention them.

    Love your work and perspective Tim! How do you think that the genealogies, both in Genesis and in Luke that point back to pre-Abrahamic times should be taken from the "video camera/historical" truth perspective? The Biblical authors even go so far as to mention ages of these patriarchs that seem very specific. How do you think Christians should try to look at them since it gets difficult to figure out the historical truth of the biblical narrative before Abraham based on your understanding of scripture?

      To be honest I’d like to know why Tim doesn’t believe Adam and Eve as real people who started all humans on earth. I mean they lived for almost 1000 years. Think of how many children they had. Cain and Able were mentioned first but that doesn’t mean they were the first children they had. We don’t know of course, but when the authors give a genealogy there must be a purpose and to over look that IMO is silly.

And this geneology of the long life spans is a point of showing how people were once immortal but are slowly dying.. This is all I can conceptualize at the moment

    • @TotallyGamerJet
      @TotallyGamerJet 4 года назад +6

      @@Gnorde the genealogy has a purpose. It's important to understand that genealogies in ancient times were not meant to be perfect record of the person's lineage. Just look at Matthew's version of the genealogy of Jesus. It is radically different from Luke's bc it had a different purpose. Matthew was showing the kingship of Jesus through his connection with King David. He also includes women like Ruth. But Luke wanted to show that Jesus was man and had a direct connection to the begin of humanity - Adam. You can't take your modern understanding of a genealogy distract from the purpose of the authors. It is possible that Adam is or is not a literal person but that is not the purpose of the genealogies to prove or deny.

    @13:00 - I think for me, the resolution of the 'what if X was a corruption of Y'/'which story came first' debate (here, Noah and Gilgamesh, etc.) is incredibly simple- if indeed these events were historical, passed down in oral tradition through Noah's descendants, and cultures and languages fractured at the Tower of Babel (indeed, even if one somehow assumed they didn't, simply as people spread out and developed different cultures), each would be a corruption, variation, or even (under the Holy Spirit) accurate recounting of the original oral events common to them all; the story that would have passed down to all nations from their common ancestors and family lines. It's no great mystery when all cultures share a similar view of a chaotic pre-creation state, or a similar flood narrative (adapted to suit their own particular culture or religious developments), and seeing the elements in the story of one culture isn't evidence of influence by another that shares the same concepts... but rather, both cultures share the same concepts because they were passed down, since the days of Noah, from the common source of their shared ancestors.

    • @veronicaal94
      @veronicaal94 3 года назад

      Exactly. That was immediately clear to me as well, particularly when I read through the Bible chronologically and discovered that Ur of the Chaldeans was in Babylon, and the introduction of Terah/Abraham's family is chronologically placed directly after the Tower of Babylon story in the narrative. We can see quite clearly that after the flood, Noah's sons all stayed in one place (near or around Babylon) where their descendants once again "fell", by choosing not to carry out the terms of the Noetic covenant God had made with Noah and all of Creation. It was their dispersal that caused them to move away from Babylon and form populations that were mentioned, spreading to other continents and areas. Hardly surprising that they all carried with them their own Creation and flood narratives, told in new languages and carried on in different new cultures. Terah was one of the people who moved away, and God continued to reveal His truth through Terah's son, Abraham.......and the rest is easily followed from there.

    Something I would have liked to ask had I been there is how do you respond to when "science" is used to change the narrative from "in the beginning ... God" to "in the beginning ... nothing created the world". That to me would be an unreconcilable collision of two competing narratives.

    • @gjlipana881
      @gjlipana881 4 года назад +2

      Sir im not in the place of trying to tell you something because im only 20 yrs old. But instead of trying to debate and to figure out who's right and who's wrong its just better to see the narrative as very gorgeous art that doesnt answer all our questions, but to enlighten us with the creative power of God. Its also better for us to adjust our perspectives on the perspective of the author's culture and the time he lived because the one who wrote this lived over 3000 yrs ago w/o knowing the sciences we have now. But the essence and the philosophical meaning of the texts is less important. It is also important on understanding the narrative of the whole bible.
      Sorry if its too long. I hope you could spend the time to read this and i hope i actually helped you or shed some light to you even though through my limited knowledge.

      Jesus in Mathew and mark quoted scripture and accuse the pharisees of not knowing the scriptures. He stated Angel's are not given in marriage..the only scripture that states this is Enoch one. Jude also quoted enoch as scripture. Enoch was able to describe the earth and yet he could have never seen it physically to describe the walls of ice. There for these ancient peoples where not describing the earth out ofnthier way of seeing the world they described it as He made it. Light came before the sun and luminaries. The earth doesnt depend on the sun to hold it in place. Its set on foundations. Things are denser than air=theory of gravity. Great beasts are described in the bible. Clearly people are able to accept Angel's mating with women creating the bible. Amazing because enoch gives the details enoch1. That's all.
      Flat earth to virgin birth. Enoch was thrown out after Jesus's time because a group of men thought it "too much" "scandalous ". Yet Genesis 6 scripture is supported by Enoch who walked with God. The bible repeats 3x and Enoch walked with God. Pretty important I think for that to be repeated over an over. Take the meat leave the bones.

      @@impattman2199 I will give my best answer also I am aware it's not his channel not sure if that was for me but yes I know I was only commenting to the persons above..it appears they removed thier comment and I didnt tag thier name in it..im very much convinced the Scripture are true and then sun and moon are in circuits around as stated in genesis. .not us moving around the sun which is heliocentrism and is directly related to ancient sun worship.
      okay here we go... answer to your question as best I can..
      (Previously stated I only hold Enoch 1 up to the same level as scripture because it is directly supported by scripture (proper hermeneutics is let scripture explain and support scripture to get contacts and meanings and contexts))
      so without being there personally (obviously) to say " i saw it written" but based on my Faith in the scripture Given by God to us and the wisdom of the Holy Spirt "YES" Enoch 1 is directly from Enoch who was as 2x stated in genesis "he walked with God"( and was taken") again I do not prescribed to the additional texts of 2 or 3 or however many more turn up because when reading them they began to conflict with existing scripture so to my spirit it says these where heavily altered added to and so on so I will stick with the book Jeuses and Jude quoted from.
      Based on the ages given in the scriptures you know all the (he begat..him and him and him) Noah would have been alive at the same time as Methuselah..so this could have been passed down through the family wrtten in ancient hebrew not modern or by word of mouth and later written by a son of Seth as the Native Americans and many other have preserved thier history extraordinarily accurately by word of mouth. But at some point it was penned and included as scripture at the century these words from Enoch were preserved as Spoken by Enoch and they were considered scripture as why else would Christ himself quoted the words of enoch as well as the apostle jude?
      Enoch 1 directly is supported by Genesis 6 as well as all ancient mens writing and geographic evidence of giants and (g)ods (not God).
      Also again when researching Remeber there where 2 enochs and in the line of Cain a Methushael not to be confused with Methuselah also to Lamechs.
      Lucifer can not create but he has all the power to influence and pervert all that God has made and I have no doubts he influnced such to give rises to confusion to future generations.

    I wish there was a way to ask Tim these questions but here goes. If one takes the view that there were other humans around with Adam and Eve, what then is the function of Eden in relation to those other humans. Let me explain what I mean. Tim says that the Israelites are to be a kingdom of priests to the nations of the world. The tabernacle functions as the place where God meets the Israelites to be these intermediaries. So if the tabernacle is like the Garden of Eden, then were Adam and Eve supposed to be intermediaries (i.e. priests) to those other humans around? But the bible does not say that.

    Very concerning on many levels because these are the future of education the same people that seek to dismiss scripture as a credible account of the world in which we live.

    Yes, dinosaurs existed with man in the Bible.
    To say that dinosaurs are not mentioned or existing with man in the Bible requires the need to explain what Leviathan means in the bible.
    Job 41
    1 canst thou draw out Leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which though letters down?
    2 canst though put an hook into his nose? Or bore his jaw through with a thorn? 3 will he make many supplications unto thee? Will he speak soft words unto thee? 4 will he make a covenant with thee? Wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
    5 wilt Val play with him as with a bird? Or will thou bind him for thy maidens? 6 shall the companions make a banquet for him? Shall they part him among the merchants? 7 canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? Or his head with fish Spears?
    8 Levine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
    9Behold the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? 10 none is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?

    Adam must have been a real person because in Gen 5:5 it says Adam was 930 years old when he died (Genesis 5:5), and his children and grandchildren shared similarly long life spans. Not counting Enoch, the ten patriarchs who were born before the Great Flood of Noah's time lived an average of 900 years.

    Genesis 1:24 in God said let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind and it was so. Perhaps to show that the Bible is indeed true that the. For instance the genealogy of Jesus can be traced back to David, and the scriptures way before David give a prophecy of this happening... so by giving those bread crumbs that go back to An Origin shows the Bible to be true!

      The Bible says that a descendent of Eve will crush the head of the snake. The geneologies show this progression from Adam to Jesus.

      Folowing this video's interpretation, Cain, Abel, Seth and their descendants could be read as simbolic representations of multiple generations that generally acted like them. Another possibility is to read Adam as a chosen representative and architype of the old humanity, similarly to how Jesus is related to the new humanity (I recomend reading and/or watching John Walton for this later view). Hope this helps.

    Something nobody I’ve heard has answered is Cain & Abel... Cain bringing firstfruits of his harvest (should’ve been good), BUT Abel was a shepherd & brought “the best portions of firstborn lambs” as an offering... that would make sense after the exodus, unless you keep Adam & Eve ONLY eating fruit.

    • @adamjaycox8602
      @adamjaycox8602 6 лет назад +11

      Raadical, the most compelling answer to me personally is that God found Cain’s sacrifice to be unacceptable because God had already started establishing the pattern of substitutionary atonement by Himself killing animals for their skins to create the first set of clothes as a covering for Man’s shame. This pattern of shame covering through the shedding of innocent blood was the same one that Abel was faithfully preserving as a “keeper of sheep” since God did not sanction the eating of animals until after the flood (Genesis 9:3). Cain’s offering did not qualify as a covering for sin and he evidently knew it, which made his offering an act of willful rebellion against God and self-reliant spitefulness against his brother. Hebrews 11:4 tells us that Abel offered his more acceptable sacrifice by faith, whereas Cain did not. If Cain had made a sacrifice for sin and then offered the first fruits of his crop as a way to give thanks to God, then he would have been honored for it. In fact, this is exactly what Leviticus 1 and 2 outline as the requirement for a grain offering. Cain’s offering was not given in trust and hope that it would cover his sin and reconcile him with his creator. Cain’s offering used fruit as a symbol of defiance in much the same way that his father and mother had.

    I struggle with this question.If we accept (as I do) that some parts of genesis are metaphors and they don't correspond to historical events then why should we accept the New Jerusalem and the New Creation as a reality ?What arguments do we have that these are not metaphors also and maybe we will never get them the way that we expect. If man was never immortal why should we one day become so?

    • @Gnorde
      @Gnorde 6 лет назад +2

      Bogdan Cristina-Maria We were “immortal” at one point, sin caused death to enter into humanity. That sin is what causes death. So when it’s all said and done and sin is wiped out then, assumption, death would be wiped out as well.

    • @CibsonCharles
      @CibsonCharles 6 лет назад +7

      There were scriptural scholars in Jesus' time who did have that idea (They were called Sadducees). Jesus made sure to clarify on that. So did Paul. So if we believe that the resurrection of Jesus was literal, then our resurrection is literal too. It is good to remember that our understanding of mortality is based on our limited capacity of perceiving reality.

    • @lukeferguson7401

      My Name surely... and in the gospel of Luke the genealogy calls Adam the son of God. And Paul compares and contrasts Jesus with Adam as the one in whom all of humanity falls or is saved. I will read the story as a story; I will just also not discount the historicity of Adam and Eve being the first humans that seems to be inherent to many of the Scriptures.

    Cain marrying a wife, she would be his sister or even a niece. All humanity came from Adam & Eve. Time is not taken into account, we measure their times by our own when it was so different, we cannot comprehend. Only three of A & E’s children are mentioned, when there were many. Mankind was perfect or very good in creation, there were no mutations, not as we are now.

If the writer/readers didn't see the Earth as the GLOBE, how come it says that the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. I'm sorry, this entire discussion seems, to me, to be 2 Peter 3:5-6 in action.
    Trying to harmonize the modern pop culture conclusion and urban legends based off outmoded scientific data with Genesis is always a theologically treacherous compromise- especially when looking at the science of erosion, fossil formation, the way dating methods actually function, the content of the fossil record, dinosaur soft tissue discoveries, ancient cultural depictions of dinosaurs alongside humanity (some including skin textures that modern paleontology confirm as accurate) points to an incredibly different picture than the 'science shows evolution to be true' narrative the culture tries to push.
    Even the science does not harmonize with this culture's account of our origins; trying to compromise the reality of the Biblical narrative (and the many times in the New Testament it is affirmed) is not only wrong, it's trying to compromise with a falsehood that even modern science doesn't agree with in total.

    The Bible is not a scientific paper… God doesn’t want to fix the world through science and facts and physical things. He wants to affect moral and spiritual and emotional and relationships. But as humans change from within affects how we relate to the physical. Trying to nail it down to humanity came from one couple, etc is to look through a kaleidoscope from the wrong end. It’s less beautiful and more confusing. What is important to God is the important question. To reframe our minds to ask what’s important to God, is to put our selves in our rightful place and humble us to accept God is God, our answers are not God. Our beliefs are not God and our salvation does not hinge on whether or not our belief narrative is right or not. And in the saving of souls, I found relationships and the power of Jesus and his teachings are the only things that make the difference

    Tim Mackey has a wonderful Grace and presence and a beautiful spirit.
    It's unfortunate that he teaches some of what he teaches with as much command as he has for the nature of scripture and is able to capture the essence of that spirit
    He expresses some very uneducated expressions regarding historical text.
    I'm able to get to a point of producing content for publication this would be one video to pick apart.
    I hate false information in the world.
