    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    It has been a year since release of 6.8 Western. Since then I bought one shoot about 500 rounds through it. My assessment, it is a fantastic cartridge far superior than the 270. More accurate, more energy at long distances, can shoot larger game at a longer distance all in a short action rifle.

    Seems to be a very well designed round and fills the old .270 niche w/o too much recoil while being able to take advantage of those long bullets. I think this one will be a winner, at least if we can ever get out of this ammo drougth.

    Thanks Ron 👍🏻 I think it’s an interesting cartridge actually. It’s great that the twist rate for .277” finally got “fixed”. Being a Swede and 6,5x55 nerd I am normally not so impressed with many of the newer creations (currently hunting with a Blaser R8 with 6,5x55 1-8” and ELD-X 143 loaded to 2750 fps), but this one has my attention. I have been thinking about a do it all rifle lately and thought that even the 6.5 PRC wouldn’t give me enough oomph downrange. The 28 Nosler is a bit too much and the 7 RM being tried and true feels a bit boring somehow although I’m sure it’s great. The 270 Win is fine and also the 270 WSM and Weatherby but the 6.8 Western seems like a breath of fresh air and really appealing. I will have to look into it more. Thanks for the informative video.

      Not as long as you think. Once the military starts using its new rounds and stops using the 308 enmass you'll likely see a rise in prices and the cheap surplus ammo dry up. Then again, I fully expect someone online to tell me that my 30-06 with SST ammo is insufficient for whitetail deer. They will tell me I need a spotter, a 4-10 power scope on my rifle, hand load all my ammo, 20 hours of sighting in and practice on the range, and at least one safety officer with me in the woods. Oh, yeah, and whitetail will required at least a 50 cal to hunt "ethically". By the way, someone has already told me that hunting with a 30-06 with open sights is unethical.

    I think one factor of all these new long-range calibers are optics. Today you can get really nice long range optics for great prices. in the 80s 4x was the default here, no-one needed anything else.

      do we still need much more than 4x ? i mean do we really need more than 1-5 or 1-6 x scopes to kill ethically inside 350 meters or so? And should we even hunt at longer ranges than that ? does it not become more animal shooting , than hunting at some point?

    Great video with great information. Not sure I'd actually get a 6.8 (too invested in 308 rifles) but this would be an ideal hunting cartridge paired with a bolt action Winchester or Browning.

    Didn’t we go through the “fat magnum” fad back in the 90’s? The WSM cartridges didn’t last long, ammunition is almost impossible to find now.

    • @charleslange7619
      @charleslange7619 3 года назад

      Or that's all you can find on the shelves cuz no one is buying any. WSM's & the RUM's ammo are about the ONLY thing you can find around my area.

      In France the 270 WSM is very popular for hunting. In my country this is boring that you cannot chose any "exotic" caliber to test it. You are lucky to have so many choices in USA

      The WSM cartridges didn't last long, ammo impossible to find?! That's not what I've noticed, seen, heard and experienced. Especially the .300 WSM is a pretty popular cartridge in my region. Not as much here in the Netherlands, but a lot more so in neighbouring countries such as Germany and France, where they're somewhat popular in straight pull bolt-action and self-loading rifles for hunting driven game.

    Awesome. Another new cartridge that Winchester will take until September before they can supply rifles. See: Legend, .350...... Instead, how about focusing on 9, 45, 223/556 and every other caliber that industry can't make enough of to satisfy demand.

    Great video Ron, but as I posted earlier today on another site, This offers no advantage over the 270 WSM. but it uses heavier bullets and needs more twist and longer fee bore...I can rebarrel my current rifle with the appropriate twist and free bore, and use the existing rifle, brass, dies, ect, cheaper than starting from scratch with a new cartridge. The wheel and the mouse trap were invented long ago, nothing is new.

      Same can be said with 25.06 re barrel for faster twist and longer bullets instead of 6.5 ... it all comes down to range time and how much your committed to shooting long range .... that’s all this is about... 6.8 is already to go that way, also have a 270wsm and 400-500 yards is plenty good for me... I spend a lot of time shooting those ranges, only to knock down my buck or elk around less than 100yds every time
