Just because he's reserved doesn't mean that he's intoxicated. A lot of musicians have low-key personalities but express themselves through their music.
The hexatonic major scale Andy refers to has been called the “Dickey Betts Scale” for decades. When something you do gets its own name, you know it’s A THING. Like “The Hendrix Chord,” which Jimi popularized. It’s been around forever and is just an E7#9. Also, how sad that Dickey Betts is being hailed as the remarkable musician he has always been, now that he’s dead. Hendrix said, “People love the dead. When you’re dead, you’re made for life.”
Betts isn't my favorite guitarist, but he played probably the most perfect studio solo I've ever heard: the first one (followed by Warren Haynes' typical one) in Bad Rain. Its composition, playing and production are simply flawless, and it summons the goosebumps every time you hear it.
I Love your playing your music too and the"in deep"lessons you give. From Jimi to Dicky you're great.Just love the way you explain and make anyone want to play.So many many Thanks.Jeandel
Dunno about that. Many, many people say the same thing. With as many people saying it, that itself makes him not underrated. Or else all these people wouldnt be saying the same thing. I've seen him in lists of the all time best, also. So that sorts cancels out being underrated.
Great lesson as always Andy!!! Dickey beats the heck out of the Major 4th in solo's like Blue Sky and Ramblin Man.....I think that Major 4th really defines his style.
Rottie Man It’s just a fourth (since there’s no such thing as a ‘minor fourth’), but yes, he definitely uses it. Add the b7 to that major hexatonic, and it’s mixolydian, which he also uses, plenty.
btw, Andy plays the Duane Allman parts in Dickey Betts' band Great Southern. Learn from the master, who also can play the shit out of anyting Jeff Beck or Jimi Hendrix!
Good lesson Andy! If just skipping the 7th, 2 string 3 note per string pattern should work great (as Paul G demonstrates) - I will have to try the hexatonic! [~}
Formula 3000 give a man fish and eats for one day. Teach a man to fish and eats for the rest of his life. Do you want to copy Dickey or learn to play guitar?
I`ve been watching Mr. Aledort for some time now, but i can`t help wondering what`s up with him. Is he tired ? I know weed is out of the question, because you guys said that it makes him paranoid or something. Very nice guy and awesome guitar player, though. Thanks !
Andy always has this "I can't believe I have to explain this stuff to you fools, but whatever" thing going on. He always looks like he's been on an all-night drunk. Love him anyway! :)
Does anyone believe Dickey Betts worried about pentatonic and hexatonic and all that BS, or do you think he just felt the music and played his ass off?
Who knows? I've heard Andy Aledort with Dickey Betts & Great Southern and you better believe Andy plays his ass off. I wouldn't be surprised if Dickey knows theory inside out. But Gregg didn't know what he was doing when he wrote Whipping Post. He showed the riff to Duane and Duane said wow, that's in 11/4 time! Gregg said he didn't know what Duane was talking about, it just sounded good.
+Jerry6750 You really think its BS?Certainly isn't necessary to know,,but as I've learned about most everything in my world, the more you understand how something works ,the better you are usually able to work it.
I don`t really think this is a channel for beginners. I mean, he`s playing things slow, just to show us the elements that make a certain famous guitarist`s signature style. There are other videos for true beginners.
B flat to huh? 🤷♂️ New people don't know what all that means. 🤣 It like when Rick Beato starts rattling off all that stuff. Man, we don't know what that means. That's why we're at Rick's channel trying to learn. But I guess he forgets that?
Saw Andy play with Dickey a couple of times and he just fit right in man. What a great time. 👍
LOVE Dickey Betts! When he's on top of his game, one of the best ever.
Just because he's reserved doesn't mean that he's intoxicated. A lot of musicians have low-key personalities but express themselves through their music.
Trust me...Dickey Betts is well aware of the scales and notes he is playing...and Andy Aledort knows him pretty damn well.....love Betts...thanks Andy

MAmor pentatonic baby! So refreshing to hear it explored. Good lesson!
I Love your playing your music too and the"in deep"lessons you give. From Jimi to Dicky you're great.Just love the way you explain and make anyone want to play.So many many Thanks.Jeandel
Andy knows his stuff
The beginning of that lick at 3:00 is the Lester Flatt G run......from his days with Bill Monroe. Comes straight from the tune Uncle Penn.
Thx Andy, your a great teacher ! Appreciate your time greatly!!!
lovely r8. my r8 is my go to guitar. i also love your lessons!
Great lesson video Dickey Betts is an under rated Guitar Legend!!

Dickey is in the top 5 of everyone.
Rusell Shaw At Fillmore East must be over your head, if you think he’s not.
Andy,Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge! Good lesson.
That Blue Grass solo intervals, sounds like Pure Prairie League used that phrase in the lines of Amie
And yes, Vince Gill. a bluegrass player, played in that band for a time.
Vince came along after Amie, though.
Pure prairie league was better before Vince came on
This is like having Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton teach you how to operate the turn signal.
you're right he has great control on the great things he gives.
Check out 2005 GW holiday back issue for the Betts style and a great lesson on stacked thirds
Great lesson as always Andy!!! Dickey beats the heck out of the Major 4th in solo's like Blue Sky and Ramblin Man.....I think that Major 4th really defines his style.

Major 3rd!!!
ANDY : Hope you are well .... could you consider doing Gipsy Kings lessons .... Tonino Baliardo his version of Pharaon
Man I Really Really miss this style of music .
Cool lesson thanks
Thx Andy I appreciate you sharing !
btw, Andy plays the Duane Allman parts in Dickey Betts' band Great Southern. Learn from the master, who also can play the shit out of anyting Jeff Beck or Jimi Hendrix!
Sounds like Jerry Garcia. Bluegrass inspired electric guitar. Andy, I want to learn this. . .
Is that axe a reissue of the '59 Les Paul sunburst or the real thing? Some great tone from those PAF humbuckers.
Good lesson Andy! If just skipping the 7th, 2 string 3 note per string pattern should work great (as Paul G demonstrates) - I will have to try the hexatonic! [~}
very nice andy
Cant you do a guitar lesson on whole blue sky?
Formula 3000 give a man fish and eats for one day. Teach a man to fish and eats for the rest of his life. Do you want to copy Dickey or learn to play guitar?
great stuff andy
don't wonder what this amazing human being and guitar teacher is up to. Be thankful for his gift, shut up, and play yer guitar.
Great video! Thanks!
Dickey and Duane were a powerful combo
Major pentatonic that is!
I`ve been watching Mr. Aledort for some time now, but i can`t help wondering what`s up with him. Is he tired ? I know weed is out of the question, because you guys said that it makes him paranoid or something.
Very nice guy and awesome guitar player, though.
Thanks !
What is the name of the song in the intro to this video?
coounit. Blue Sky
Andy always has this "I can't believe I have to explain this stuff to you fools, but whatever" thing going on. He always looks like he's been on an all-night drunk. Love him anyway! :)
Dickey also studied Dejango Reinhardt.

Max Min 11/8
He had time in the hotel. Why not? Not everyone is Hendrix; can't read or write music.
+Jerry6750 You really think its BS?Certainly isn't necessary to know,,but as I've learned about most everything in my world, the more you understand how something works ,the better you are usually able to work it.
I'm sure you mean, Don Mueller, that no one in rock music is as naturally gifted as Hendrix, or should even be mentioned in the same sentence
I don`t really think this is a channel for beginners. I mean, he`s playing things slow, just to show us the elements that make a certain famous guitarist`s signature style. There are other videos for true beginners.
Thank you..
The link and title say it's "Dickey Betts", but the tags and intro text in the video say "Dickie Betts"
Which is it?
GorillaSalsa Dickey.
The right amount of hllbilly
Since it's a plain top I was thinkin' '58ri!?! A great guitar anyway, and Aledort is......well, let's face it- beyound great:-)
I didn't think it was to funny. I have seen Dicky Betts, hes fucking sick.
IF Betts could have copyrighted his licks he would more money than Bill Gates.
Possibly, but Gates invented covid so he would have made even more money from that!
Thank you. SO much... I mean, I loved Duane WAY better, but I still loved the Allman Brothers, You have to, being a Georgia Native and all.
Hahaha! Betts is the guy!
maybe we should stop arguing on Andy Aledort condition and watch and listen.Friendly.Jeandel
Duane....as great as he was...ends up overshadowing Dickie, one of the more versatile and creative guitar players around.
Andy,is one of the better teachers, Nice les Paul.
This guy’s seen some shit, ain’t no doubt
B flat to huh? 🤷♂️ New people don't know what all that means. 🤣 It like when Rick Beato starts rattling off all that stuff. Man, we don't know what that means. That's why we're at Rick's channel trying to learn. But I guess he forgets that?
i first read this as
"In Deep: Dickey Butts"
holy fkn GATE...dial that shit back a bit
yeah. without the in deep it wouldnt be funny
I know this dude's got a bag of weed somewhere close by
He always looks stoned
Cant even spell his name right Guitar World?
In deep, this guy watched too many pornos.
lmao
I gotta stop this chongin
I don't think he is either, I think he just has a medical condition, sluggish eyelids. If you notice, he's alway's this way. JMHO :-)
Hilarious video title...
LESS TLK MAN AN MORE PICKIN DUDE
Noob question, so he's basically playing a a minor pentatonic in the 1st position?
