Kasparov was past his prime, but Carlsen was before his prime. And, at that particular point in time, kasparov was closer to his prime than Carlsen. What was Carlsen's ELO in their 2004 meeting? Well below 2700.

My uncle, may he Rest in Peace, Boris Eliosov was an IM. He was so confident, he didn't care enough about ELO ratings or becoming a GM. He played together Kasparov in a youth chess group in the USSR. The higher level now is Magnus playing against himself or playing against Stockfish. Keep climbing Magnus! Don't let yourself stagnate because you've reached the peak!
There is no play against stockfish. It's just not physically possible, it's only gonna get better. One of the most difficult things in the life of a competitive spirit is reaching the top. Where do you aspire to go? What are your goals? It must be draining until a new real challenge arrives.
Just imagine, the only thing stopping him from being the best was himself, he's not arrogant, he simply left no rock unturned in order to convince himself, it's now a logical implication rather than trusting himself.
