I'm from NYC, my great-grandmother loved shopping at B. Altman's in part because her name was Bertha Altman, of no relation to the owner, but she got the best service there because of her name. She was a very petite and stylish woman and lived into the 1970s. In my head, you now own my great grandma's coat because it's possible. She would've been a young mom when this was in style.
"On this site, from 1886-1908, stood the Beehler Umbrella Factory, the oldest umbrella house in America. Founded in Baltimore by Francis Beehler in 1828. "
Ermm the reason people don't really use umbrellas in Scotland is because any rain that's hard enough to be worth using one comes with winds that will break them. Maybe be careful if like it. 🙂
I love the silk dress, and honestly I love seeing repair work too. That means someone cared enough to make it live a little longer. I know the silk is going to disintegrate. But it would be really neat to go through it, photograph and document everything and then remake a copy. That way it could live on far after it because shattered dust.
I wish I had known you were coming to the Renaissance Festival! I'm a vendor here and I was just watching this as I was getting into costume. You should have a meet up here next year! ❤
Abby, I need you to know this story. The day you came to the faire my partner and I were having a morning smoke at Danny Boy Pipes. We were chatting with one of the workers who was sipping on a Bloody Mary for breakfast. When all of a sudden this girl comes running up and out of breath! “She’s here! She’s here!” She told the worker. After she was able to compose herself the girl explained she had spotted you “The Abby Cox” who had inspired her love for historic clothing. The lady was willing to abandon her Bloody Mary in favor of helping her friend find you so she could at least say hi. No idea if she found you but I hope you had fun. Ps love the clothes haul!
Before I forget, hello to Judy (friend of Abby's mom). I admire anyone who tries anything to dress up for a RenFaire. I wore selected pieces in black including boots, looked a little dour, so I popped on a copper circlet decorated with miscellaneous rose gold ribbons, beads and announced to my very well dressed (think Pierroette meets Moulin Rouge) friend, let's go. That thrifted hat is so IT! I am not a hat person, but that hat could convince me that I was.
Gah! I miss the Ohio Ren fest! I hope you got to see the the Gentlemen swordsmen. Their show is hilarious! If you want another fun weekend, go back for the Highland Games weekend. They take crowd volunteers and stage a highland games with prizes from the various booths for each event. The haggis toss is so funny and so much fun. I won three years running and had an absolute blast.
I thought recognized the turkey leg sign in the thumbnail, but told myself every ren faire has a nearly identical decor item like that. Imagine my joy when you, in fact, did go to the Ohio Ren Faire!! Hope you enjoyed it immensely
Wow I love the blue hat. Initials on the umbrella look like GLB (G in the center/main position, L on left, B on right); my grandmother had monogrammed stuff in a similar style, reminds me of her stuff.
Based on my experience working with baskets, I'd say this is an oak splint, double-handle work basket that dates circa 1860. My guess is that it was used for laundry and the dampness of wet clothes helped create the current shape but not being able to examine it for water staining, that's just a guess. And I'll take a stab at SBG (or SGB, left to right) for the monogram.
Yes, if it is made from oak splints (I can't say for sure from the video), it's more likely to be older, as that is a traditional material. Although weavers today do indeed weave using historical patterns, very few of them work with oak, it is very difficult! I'm an apprentice weaver and I've only harvested and woven with bark. Using the interior of a tree (splints), whether oak or ash, is much more labor intensive. I'd also look for a name or initials on the bottom of the basket.
NYer here… it’s pronounced Steye (rhymes with eye) va - sant. It’s the last name of one of the early Dutch families who settled in New Netherlands. Peter Stuyvesant was the last Dutch director general (essentially governor) before the English took over the colony in 1664.
I'm so glad you got that hat, I was worried you wouldn't do it and break my heart! I'm one of the few Scots who do indeed use brollys, welcome to the team lol
The Ohio Ren Fair is the one I went to as a teen, here’s to Hoosiers running to Ohio for old timey shenanigans. Love the Swordsmen and the Theater in the Ground so many memories. Thanks for taking us on your adventures.
SGB or TGB on the monogram. The Beehler Umbrellas was started in 1828 in Baltimore Maryland and has the distinction of being the first one in the United States.
I'm constantly jealous of other countries' vintage fairs. My city had one and it was basically like thrift store finds or more 'modern vintage' like the 90s/2000s graphics tees/sports stuff.
Forgive my grammer i have been up for 30 to 36 hours. I love the hat 😍😍😍 I have many hats in my life but I don't wear them as often as I would like! So if the museum "rejected" the dress due to it being not 100% original wouldn't that be rejecting the whole premise of historical clothing repairing, altering, creating new outfits from the scraps of old. How many dresses are 100% original? We did finally make it to the ohio ren faire for Sci fi weekend! My fiance and I are planning a UK trip possibly honeymoon or maybe just a trip I can't wait to be back over there! Have fun on the cruise!
You're soooooo beautifully ETHOS! Gorgeous finds ... those dresses and that basket too ... tho!!! You and Mom are just as giddy and excited when The Ma and I venture out ... basic estate sale and thrift hunting. We're due for an outing soon!! So fun - and thank you for the history behind too!! Love that!!
That black hat!! I'd be ask over that!! I have about 200 vintage hats. They're too wonderful! Oh, and the umbrella!! Gasp!! I collect those too, but only have like 5.
Beehler Umbrella Factory existed from 1828-1908 in Baltimore and is the oldest umbrella house in the US, according to the Historical Marker Database. That umbrella is a serious find!!!
That hat would go with bedazzled dark denim. Imo break out the bedazzler. Hot take: jean blazer instead of jacket or waiscoat instead of vest ?Lol Omg the velvet cape made me 💕SQUEE!!!!!!!!!!💕
there are no big antique malls where i live so i'm living vicariously through your content haha. seems very fun but also a bit overstimulating having so much stuff to look through. so many pretty stuff though, that coat is to die for!
The antiquing might be exhausting, but it’s fun. Hi Judy. The Jack Sparrow count was cool. That umbrella is awesome. I think it’s a GB. Oh the coat!!! That pretty evening dress. They might’ve just tried to fix the lining to keep it together. The basket is cool. The books are awesome. I’m looking forward to next time.
I love fair ground antique extravaganzas. You have some fantastic finds and I loved seeing your haul. I always spend too much buying spinning wheels when I go to those, but it's so fun.
We live 1.5 miles from our regional Ren Faire however we are gridlocked at home every weekend from October until Thanksgiving weekend... it's a love hate thing. Thi year we need to but bat style wings in red or burgundy and blue or teal so my toddlers can be Pain and Panic from Hercules next Halloween. Theyll be almost 1 and almost 3 respectively. I'm gonna be Meg, and my hubby will be Hades.
Following all the curls, I believe the monogram on the umbrella handle is sgs (reading left to right). But there's an extra little curl on the top left that seems to be just to make it look more symmetrical, since it's not connected to anything that doesn't already have a connection, if that makes sense. Also the flouncy curls on the g are crazy excessive.
Love the Ohio Renn Fair. Jack Sparrow spotting is some I did with my friends too! We actually have 2 Capt. Thomas Sparrow's in my family from way back(late1600's).
Beehler Umbrella Factory, Baltimore was founded by Francis Beehler in 1828 and was apparently the oldest/first umbrella manufacturer in America. ❤ The company motto is great - “Born in Baltimore, raised everywhere” Get it...”raised” like an umbrella 🌂 ❤
The Ohio Faire was my first experience when I was 16 and I've been hooked ever since, just went to the Colorado Faire last year and damn I loved it so much. There is nothing quite like being surrounded by other authentic dorks who love the same thing you do.
If you want to gently reshape your basket, submerge the basket in water for several hours until the cane becomes softer and more flexible. Then make your adjustment - you could brace it between two heavy objects and leave it to dry in that new position. Perhaps put some weight in the base too - a few bricks wrapped in a cloth works well. When weaving cane, it is soaked beforehand and woven wet to make it easier and more pliable, preventing snapping of the canes. It also dries tighter. A sign of well made, quality cane woven items is long individual canes (as opposed to lots of smaller pieces). I will usually find an end piece and trace it back to its starting point - individual canes can be say 4 to 6 feet long - so that’s a great way to spot well made items. I find that older items tend to have longer individual canes. Pre mass production etc.
I wonder what would happen if you had a room full of sewing people and played them the sound of snaps opening or closing? Perhaps you can experiment on the cruise. 🤭 Captive audience so to speak. The cocoon coat is glory itself! ❤
Wait - Fabulous cloche hat, drop dead cocoon coat… that’s an outfit. Wear it to the grocery store. Or to tea. Let them be admired. I’m going to have to copy that coat, it’s amazing!
I’m a huge Jack McConnell fan (hat) but I collect his “Red Feather” creations because those were crafted by him specifically- and usually for a custom order by a socialite or movie star.
When you first brought out the cocoon coat I thought you said racoon coat lol, thinking racoon fur collar. Can't believe that dress was only $10. It's fun watching someone else spending money.
When I was 14, I became super curious to see the National Underground Railroad Museum in Cincinnati. We live in NY, but my dad booked 2 flights tickets for me and him to visit my Cincinatti museum, the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. We also visited a massive Ohio thriftstore warehouse that looks like the one in the video. Social media as an adult has made me feel, not less weird, but less alone in my weirdness. Yay to parents to embrace their children’s quirky interests!!!!! ❤
I am attending a antique/craft faire in my neck of the woods this coming week. I wasn’t even thinking about clothing and textiles. But I am now and I don’t have nearly enough cash on hand!
OMG, I want that coat; it looks damn gorgeous on you! I would bring it on the trip...just do it. The hat was definitely made for you, Abby. Ugh! I might be a wee bit jealous. Enjoy the cruise, xoxo's Sandie🤗
The monogram looks like LCJ on the umbrella. If you look the first bottom loop connects up to the c and then the biggest loop with the swirls at the end looks like a cursive j.
I'm excited to see if you picked up any accessories for your cruise. STIE-vess-sent Peter Stuyvesant was a Dutch colonial officer who served as the last Dutch director-general of the colony of New Netherland from 1647 until it was ceded provisionally to the English in 1664, after which it was split into New York and New Jersey with lesser territory becoming parts of other colonies, and later, states.
Not sure how I missed this video a year ago, but just noticed my friend Doug Mumaw carrying his "Swordsmen" show sign! I spent eight years as a regular cast member of the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Wisconsin. Love Abby's Mom's game!! Hilarious!
Wow! What amazing finds! Isn't the hat enough of a neutral color that you could wear it with something on your cruise? It is too awesome to leave behind.
Sounds like a pretty great sale! Its been YEARS since I got to go to one of those and I can remember the wonderful art deco necklace I found there....with, sadly, no memory of where that lovely necklace wondered off to!
So awesome that I watched this. Thank you, and for once thanks youtube's suggestions. Lol. I have neices and a mom that I'm close to, yet are hard to understand on these topics. But I'm learning (or a least trying to learn). For what it's worth, Thank you.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooOOOH! so many goodies!!! Thank you for sharing those treasures with us. also, quite amazed that the sparrow count was so low! O.o
I always find great things at the Extravaganza. Did you stop at any of the big Springfield antique malls near by? The Renaissance fair is always fun. Hopefully I'll make it next year.
I thiiiink the initials on the umbrella are sGb but the middle G of course means that's the surname so - S.B.G. Always fun to find things with personalization - I have a coat made from rex rabbit and fox fur with T.F.J. (in that same tJf format)embroidered in the lining, it is one of my great antiquing treasures!
Abby's mom bringing a clicker to the ren faire is the energy I am here for
I'm here for a parents take over the channel video
When you said that there was a museum accession number in the dress, my first thought was "Did Abby just buy stolen goods?".
I'm from NYC, my great-grandmother loved shopping at B. Altman's in part because her name was Bertha Altman, of no relation to the owner, but she got the best service there because of her name. "On this site, from 1886-1908, stood the Beehler Umbrella Factory, the oldest umbrella house in America. Founded in Baltimore by Francis Beehler in 1828. "
The monogram must be FB. At first, I thought JB or JCB. The calligraphy F looks a lot like the J.
Just looked up William Beehler and he was an American umbrella maker.
Founded in Baltimore in 1828. There is a plaque where the factory stood from 1886-1908.

I'm watching this while getting ready backstage at the Ohio Renaissance Festival. It makes me so happy you came to our faire! Come back any time!
Ok, but Griffy's tail just showing behind you like a little shark fin going past 💙🦈
I was giggling at that. doo doo doo doo dododo...
The little curly fries waving around below her
oh I'd wear that cocoon coat for all eternity. what a vibe it's like a giant blanket
I didn't really care for them until just recently and now I need one
Yes! We need a pattern for this cocoon coat!
@@juliemiller9258 Well not this exact coat but I've heared good things about the decades of style cocoon coat pattern
@@agimagi2158 Thanks!
I have two vintage furs and fear wearing them.

Oh a meet up would be so fun!! Early season... before the traffic on 73 goes bananas... :-)

that coat is almost identical to the one Anastasia wears on the way to the Opera in Paris

I live in the greater Seattle metro area and everyone always says that locals don't use umbrellas. False.
I legitamately cried a little when I saw the cocoon coat. What amazing finds.
The Ohio Ren Fair is the one I went to as a teen, here’s to Hoosiers running to Ohio for old timey shenanigans. Love the Swordsmen and the Theater in the Ground so many memories. Thanks for taking us on your adventures.
I’m crying, I was at the renaissance festival the same weekend as you! Your OFMD outfit is amazing!
SGB or TGB on the monogram. The Beehler Umbrellas was started in 1828 in Baltimore Maryland and has the distinction of being the first one in the United States.
I cannot put into words how badly I want a cocoon coat like that!
It's giving Anastasia mixed with Phryne Fisher 😍
I live in Scotland and I don't use umbrellas because of the wind. Consider yourself warned.
Glad to see you had fun at the Ohio Ren Faire! I could easily see future meetups with fans happening on time traveler's weekend.
I Love the fact that you’re in the Midwest again! I recognize the places in your vlogs now that you’re in my neck of the woods

My mother would occasionally treat herself to a shopping trip to B. Altman's. I remember that she was quite sorry when they closed.
I was binging Abby when suddenly a wild Abby appeared. She used New Video, it was super effective.
Excellent costume choice Abby I *LOVE* Our Flag Means Death. 👍 👍
That black hat!! I'd be ask over that!! I have about 200 vintage hats. They're too wonderful!

The cocoon coat is the bomb, of all the beauties it would be the coat, the basket and the dress with the beading. Love it!
I’ve heard a lot about the Renaissance Fair and I’m happy to see it appearing on my feed lol

I don't normally like oversized clothes but that cocoon coat is gorgeous!
I cannot believe you were at my local Ren Fest and I wasn't there! But I'm glad you liked it. :-)
I love the idea of counting all the Jack Sparrows or Black Pearls at the Fair. Awesome that your mum supports you
I wonder what would happen if you had a room full of sewing people and played them the sound of snaps opening or closing? Perhaps you can experiment on the cruise. 🤭 Captive audience so to speak. The cocoon coat is glory itself! ❤
Wait - Fabulous cloche hat, drop dead cocoon coat… that’s an outfit. Wear it to the grocery store. Or to tea. Let them be admired.
I’m going to have to copy that coat, it’s amazing!
Hmmm, maybe if we all squawk, Abby will copy the coat & let folks have the pattern?! (Pretty please!) 😍
Folkwear has a pattern for cocoon coats.
People do use umbrellas in Scotland as it rains a LOT! Unless you are going to the highlands and then you need a good waterproof coat!

Abby's mom is so much fun. Hi Judy!
Not a bad haul at all! I must say that I am jealous of the Goodies book. I would love to get my hands on that and look through it very carefully. 🙂💜
i love these vloggy antiquing videos!
OMG, I want that coat; it looks damn gorgeous on you! I would bring it on the trip...just do it. The hat was definitely made for you, Abby. Ugh! I might be a wee bit jealous.
Enjoy the cruise,
xoxo's Sandie🤗
Those are some amazing finds!
Ohio Ren Fest!!!! I was there a week before you. I was so sad not to see a single OFMD costume, so thank you for representing. Great haul!
Amazing treasures! Looking forward to seeing everyone on the cruise!
Wait, the umbrella stripes WEREN’T on purpose 😳
The monogram looks like LCJ on the umbrella. If you look the first bottom loop connects up to the c and then the biggest loop with the swirls at the end looks like a cursive j.
I'm excited to see if you picked up any accessories for your cruise. STIE-vess-sent

Thank you! Before commenting my own pronunciation correction I scrolled through to see if anyone else already covered it ;)
Not sure how I missed this video a year ago, but just noticed my friend Doug Mumaw carrying his "Swordsmen" show sign!
With the right colour and the right feather, you could pull off a turban with a feather.
B Altman was in Mrs Maisellll ahh that coat is magic
That blue hat is everything. Wear it casually at home. Such fun 👏🏽
Nobody uses umbrellas in Scotland, you just exist in the mist.
True, extremely true. You just get damp.
I'm glad you uploaded this one so early! I was able to watch it before I have to go to work
love the cocoon coat...now I'm looking at patterns to make a Christmas present for my girls by hand as sewing machine needs servicing...lol
I really need a friend like you to do these types of activities with; it's not much fun on my own. Your mum is a wuvvie, as are you. 😊
Sounds like a pretty great sale! Its been YEARS since I got to go to one of those and I can remember the wonderful art deco necklace I found there....with, sadly, no memory of where that lovely necklace wondered off to!
Just the content I was looking for while I snuggle down into my covers and wake up on a Monday morning.
Ohio RenFest is one of my favorite events every year. I drive over from Indiana at least twice during the season.
The cocoon coat is lovely.
Everything you got was FAB!
Especially the coat and the hat!
I want to know about how to make that red velvet bodice you have on in the haul portion of this video
I love the disembodied tail a-wagging above the table ^^
Yay we went last Sunday to the Ohio Renaissance fest during Viking weekend an had a blast! Highly recommend to anyone as we go yearly
Hi Judy! I hope you had a fun time looking for/at antiques. You definitely went with a great team. 🙂
So awesome that I watched this. Thank you, and for once thanks youtube's suggestions. Lol. I have neices and a mom that I'm close to, yet are hard to understand on these topics. But I'm learning (or a least trying to learn). For what it's worth, Thank you.
Ooo....that cocoon coat is an amazing find
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooOOOH! so many goodies!!! Thank you for sharing those treasures with us. also, quite amazed that the sparrow count was so low! O.o
The video has dropped a little early but I’m happy to see it 👏🏽
P.S. I’ve never seen antique shopping for clothes before.
Its S.G.B., and I'm so jealous! Antique trips with friends are always the best.
I always find great things at the Extravaganza. Did you stop at any of the big Springfield antique malls near by? The Renaissance fair is always fun. Hopefully I'll make it next year.
My heart.... You said Ohio Ren Fest and I suddenly felt like I went the wrong weekend this year 🙃 But I am so glad you liked it!
