My first pair of PNW boots was the Nick’s Builder Pro off of the ready to ship page. They were a size too long and a couple of widths too narrow. I had JK rebuild them into a Superduty S. They are my go to soft toed boots.
Love these types of vids! I think the Nicks "ranger" model does actually come with a 430 stock. Nicks also now has three types of "stock" haha, "Brand new stock," "Like new stock" which is returns and the like, and of course factory seconds.
I don't think the toe cap matters really.. M1 vs Sherman is just a counter thing from what I can tell.. cause they sell all four options as stock White's website offerings.. with/without cap toe for M1s and Shermans., I really liked his Stevens boot alot.. im about halfway through,, great stuff,.. this layout goes pretty smooth as well
I like the collection analysis videos. This could potentially start a conversation about an unlimited number of boots. You could also invite the owner to speak as special guests in your live shows.
How is the Wilshire heel counter cover different from the type 2? They are both short and end on the quarters instead of the vamp like the type 1. I thought they were the same 😂
On just about every Nicks quick ship options you can go full SM, RO/SM, or full RO. Full RO really isn't a special thing for them these days. Also for Nicks brand new in stock options, they only offer the BuilderPro Sizes 7-12 D and EE. They also have a "like new" section which are returns, and a 2nds section. I'm a pretty big fan of that Whites 50/50 last and the MP boots in general, seems to fit my foot very well. I wish they would give more leather options for the MP though. Also a huge fan of semi-gusseted boots, more companies should offer them. Nicks was lazy about making an easier lace up option and made the Ivan which just has a strip of tongue leather that isn't gusseted and looks cheap to me. The video format for the collections is nice, lets you hear a little from the owner and gives a much better overall view of the boots, I prefer it over just photos. I think live would be cool as well. Thanks to Everett for sharing!
@@TheLazyTitan I've never agreed with the full RO choice. I mean....it's great that it is offered, cuz everyone should be able to pick what they want....but I don't understand why it would be picked. Agree on the 5050, but that can really be said for all White's offerings. Tongues is a whole conversation. I'll have to think on whether it could be a whole episode, but there are many pro's & con's to different choices. Including the Ivan. There is a Live coming up next week. (assuming by live you mean the owner being with us showing his boots. Not live live)
It's interesting to hear your feedback about the width of different brands in the instep and shaft etc, especially for people like me who suffer from the dreaded lady ankles deficiency syndrome. I'm still studying how to do PNW ordering and I'm pretty much come to the conclusion that I need to sacrifice my first purchase to get my sizing correct since I live outside of the US. With the exception of me suddenly getting a trip the Northwest or finding a cheap ebay pair in my intended size to test out Whites or Franks, it's hard for me to justify to myself buying a pair of up to 700 dollar boots. That said, since I've never had a seidel leather, the black over red leather for the drifters 3 is speaking to me and I've been looking at it for a while now. It might be a hype collab boot with Rose Anvil but I'm willing to be stupid enough to fall for it to try out Whites. I'm thinking of going half size down from my true to size and maintaining my width at D since my foot isn't that wide if I do go the Drifters 3 route. On the video format, I do like this format. We get to see someone's collections, we get to see you two react to it with your experience in having spent far more time and money outfitting boots and we get nuggets of wisdom getting tossed at us for free. Edit : On a second look, I might not even be able to buy directly from White's website lol.
@@cheekibreeki9155 Do a fit-sheet with whomever you choose. And do that fit-sheet 2 or 3 times in a row to compare them for consistently. Maybe even with different socks. Then when you are most sure of results send the best sheet in.
Hell yeah, great video though I may be a little biased. I guess a small downside is I can't be on there to answer questions you guys have in real time. From the top - I only thought the Nick's RTS page was returns because it's always so random as far as options, sizing, etc. On the JK arch thing, when those boots were new they definitely had a decent arch feeling, so I just assumed it was a 4811 or similar boot under a different name.
White's packer- I originally tried to train a trifold in both packers, but the lace spacing is too tight on both (thus the thick full length kilties), and the fold would dig into my instep at the bottom. Really bad going down stairs. I tried the C fold after I heard Mike say that's what you do with White's, works great on both of them. There are faint remnants of the pebbling on the lowers of the one so I'm pretty sure it was all pebbled. 9D on that pair btw They said the brown pair was from 98 so indeed an older build. And there was no rhyme or reason for the disparity in kiltie shape between the 2, just trying different things.
White's Stephens- it was the camera angle, I double checked and they look the same from the back. Those were also an eBay find, 260$ and the foot bed wasn't even molded to the previous owner's feet, so yeah the white liner is just how they came. The MPs were new, just off the shelf from domestic domestic, they had a decent sale so I jumped on them.
The 350 Cruisers were the first pair I actually custom ordered and waited a couple months for. Just deleted pull loops and celastic, and also custom width. (Custom in that they didn't have 9C as an option on the site)
Frank's FR- I actually made those EB Chestnut kilties. And I didn't even have the dome in mind at all when I ordered them. It was a last minute decision when they came in to save them for a couple months just to say I did the dome once lol. I'm open to horse rump but as I understand it you gotta make sure you've got your sizing down so if I were to do that I'd just break down and do a fit sheet and see what they say. Even after all this I don't think I've got my sizing down 100%. I do have Dr Sole halves and heels on a crappy pair of redwing work boots, my first resole actually. Maybe I'll do another video of my lower tier boots, in case you guys run out of content some day lmao
And in closing, I'll definitely have some rikers and monkeys eventually. As for which patterns I like the best, I do a lot of kneeling at work (hardwood flooring) so the toe caps and LTTs make that a little less enjoyable. As you said I was just trying to check boxes and try everything, see if something rises above the rest, and so far there aren't really any that I dislike, certainly the Cruisers and FRs are current favorites. And by commenting here I have essentially linked my channel, anyone can just click my name. I have uploaded the complete series on resoling those packers since making this collection video.
You mentioned White's Smokejumpers. Can you tell me the difference between Actual White's SJ's Vs. Hawthorn SJ's (by White's). Hawthorns are not even listed on the White's website, but they are listed on secondary firefighters/workwear retailers' sites. Why the covert listing and what are the differences between brand vs. label/generic?
@@favidh1934 Hawthorn was an independent logger boot builder back in the day. When Hawthorn went out of business White's bought the name and decided to use it for marketing purposes to differentiate White's lower level cheaper boots. So White's top tier boots remained White's boots as always, but their cheaper line started being sold under the label Hawthorn. Not toong ago White's decided to stop using the Hawthorn name and to label the lower tier boots as White's now. Most Hawthorns were not rebuildable, and they were never handwelted. What you are seeing on workwear retailer sites is. Most likely old stock. Or maybe the retailers haven't updated their descriptions so when you order Hawthorn a pair of White's will arrive? 3rd possibly, which seems unlikely, is that White's is using the Hawthorn label only for bulk wholesale account sales for some reason.
Great episode! One question: should the outside of the leather midsole and the weld be treated with oil or wax to protect it from snow and salt in the winter? Or does it weaken the strukture of the boot?
@@Fred4455 weld? I'm gonna guess that is a typo for waist when it is a half sole? Yes, the outside of the midsole, and the heel stack (we group them together and call them the "edges") should be treated. The builder normally stains it. The stain is usually clear, black, or brown. I never touch it up with stain personally as it is water based and comes off too easy. I have used beeswax, and usually use Lincoln Wax, which comes in Natural (clear) and a half dozen or so other colors. It is about half Carnuba wax in composition. When the boot has a half sole, I treat the waist exactly as I treat the edges.
I LOVE THE BOOT COLLECTION VIDEOS!!! Great collection Everett.
