How to Clean a Shark Rotator Professional Vacuum

- To keep you vacuum running and sucking, it's best to clean out the
filters and canister. I show you how to do that. Also cutting the hair
and stuff that gets caught around the brush.
Thank you so much! I've had this vacuum for 2 years and had never cleaned it because I didn't know how. This was a huge help!
Phew! What a relief! Ol' Sharky has never been so clean! I thank you from the bottom of my filter! 😂
This is a beast of a vacuum. I got the NV501 used for only $10 last year, and I'm just now replacing the filters to basically like new again!
I recently bought a different model of Shark Rotator vacuum (NV680 series). However, all of the same basic maintenance procedures apply to that model as well. You are definitely right about cleaning the canister and pre-motor filters. It is the real fine dust that eventually works its way through those filters and slowly damages the vacuum's motor. A vacuum that gets cleaned regularly is one that will last a lot longer and keep its performance than one that does not receive this type of regular maintenance.
I bought a second set of filters for my vacuum. It was dirt cheap on Amazon. I can rinse one set out and set the second set in my vacuum while the set I washed is drying. Thanks for the good video!
Thank you Greg! I have had my Shark Rotator vacuum for about a year now and this is the first time that I've needed to clean the filters. I LOVE the Shark. It replaced my Dyson that I had for over 10-years and either the power switch went or the motor burned out on it and I felt it was time for a new vacuum anyway. This Shark has been a better (and lighter!) vacuum for me. Who would have thought that something as simple as detachable canister and LED lights on the front would help make it a winner, but it did. I never could see what I was missing with the Dyson because it didn't have the headlamps. Anyway, I'm looking forward to many more years with the Shark.
One thing that I do recommend is wiping down the inside of the filter cylinder 'before' you lift out the bottom (flat) filter screen. This will catch any dirt that falls down while you wipe. (Yes, mine was pretty nasty.) Then, do a final wipe. Anyway, thanks again!
Thank you for the instructional video. I questioned using soap on the filters and found the owners guide had a "Important message: DO NOT use Soap when cleaning the filters. I have a newer model with Duo Clean PowerFins and Self Cleaning Brushroll, but otherwise the the canister and filter assembly is the same.
These companies still haven't made it easy for us with the Tangled hair/string's and everything else that's get cought up in the brush roll! I recently purchased a 2 in one small Vacuum which has the feature of a easy REMOVABLE of the BRUSH. Can't understand why these manufacturer are still stuck in a rut with this problem. I was just getting ready to purchase one watching your video before this one, now I'm kinda having second thoughts. Thank you for being so detailed and Informative.
Your instructions worked perfect, thanks!
The only small improvise I did was since I had concentrated dog molecules to blast out of there, I used Mrs. Meyer's scented hand soap to suds up the filters, and their spray cleaner to wipe around inside where the filter sits. I took several passes to get that clean, so I sprayed it pretty heavily on a wash cloth, and finally, no dog smell.
Thank you so much😄this helped big time, my vacuum was doing a poor job so I looked up how to clean it and this video helped me do exactly that.
So helpful! Thanks so much for taking the time to share this knowledge on how to maintain our awesome shark vacuums!
Juliana Costas n
I have an old shark mine does not lift off and the fixtures do not sell at Walmart.
Thank you, Greg. I couldn't hear because my wife was vacuuming, but all that hair was crazy. I thought you were a beauty salon.
Thanks for the informative video! I didn’t even know about the third hidden filter
On the new versions (Lift Away) the access for the post-motor HEPA filter is on the bottom. Feeling underneath the bottom edge lip of the faceplate there's a release you push in, and then slide the face plate straight down. It's a large button, so it's even a lot easier than that tab. Reversing you just slide it back up with a click after checking or replacing the filter.
The upper filters are exactly the same though. In my experience cleaning them about once or twice a month is adequate. (At least for a small 2 story house.) Only grumble is the holder for the upper foam section doesn't seal snugly, the rubber lip doesn't seem to go out far enough. The second upper filter doesn't seem like enough if too much gets by the foam part.
Your video rocks! Helped so much after using the vacuum and not reading about it first! 🤪😂😂
Hi Greg,
I use to use a scissor to cut the hair off the roller. I found a carpet cutter/razor that I found in my husband's tool box and it works great. Cuts right thru the hair and in a minute or 2 you have yourself a hair free roller. I put the tool back in my toolbox. lol. Give it a try.
That works great. Thanks for the tip.
Great video. Thanks. I never knew there was a filter at the bottom and front. You can open the bristle part with a coin or something similar in the three screws to make it easier to access. Also there is a groove along the length of the bristles to make it easier to cut stuff out.
Wow! You're amazing! So clear and generous!
Thank you!
Great simple video followed your lead and my shark works like it's brand new.
loved your entrance! 😅
Came here for this comment 😂 great video tho!
This is a rock solid vacuum. I use it as a back up for my carpet cleaning jobs
Thank you so much for this video. I was just trying to figure out how to get it apart and thought there might be something on you tube. This was very helpful.
Thank you for your very helpful video. Wishing you all the best!
Excellent video -- very well done!! Easy to follow and understand --- very thorough --- thanks!!
Idk if it has been mentioned, but when you're cutting the hair out of the bottom, hit the "Lift Away" button and it will leave you just the bottom. Easier to clean with it upside down in your lap than laying the vaccum down.
Filters you can rinse under a spigot and wash with soap and water then dry in a dryer. The vaccuums are awesome for self easy of maintenence.
Thank you! Millennial here and I think you helped me get my vacuum back up and running properly. The suction was terrible and it was making a weird sound like when it gets blocked. So once we get all dry, I’ll get my chores done 😂. Also, I know the filters are cleanable but do we need to replace them at a point instead of cleaning
If you cut on both sides of the roller brush turn it on it sucks off by itself
I'll have to try that!! Sounds like a neat trick!
I just bought one of the Sharks. It's a great Vacuum. Thanks for sharing. Great Job!!!!
What an amazing tutorial and now I feel awful and gross for not changing my vacuum. My old Shark smelled like dog hair because I didn’t know how to clean it so when we had a baby I just bought a new one and now it’s time to learn to clean the one I have. Thanks for a great tutorial. How often should I actually replace the filters versus washing?
Thanks for this video just recently got this vacuum and with a house of girls same thing has happened to ours . thanks for this helpful video!
Perhaps this was already mentioned, but using a seam ripper is easier than using scissors to remove the hair that is wrapped around the brush. Very helpful video, btw. Thanks.
Donna S I read that somewhere too. The scissors is kind of difficult ( for me anyway )
how do you clean the hose? Otherwise great video, thanks
You can get a long brush they use to clean dryer lint traps. Take off the hose, run some warm water in the tub or take it outside and use the garden hose. Add some water and soap to the brush then into the hose and rotate it as you go, also collapsing it so it gets smaller, otherwise you'll have trouble removing the brush. Once it's scrubbed clean, rinse clean till you see clean water. To dry it, hang it over a chair so that both ends are facing downward. It may take a day or 2 to completely dry inside. Once it's dry reinstall it on to the vacuum. If you see a "port" it's a small round door that is next to where you connect the hose. Make sure that's clean as well. It's prone to get a buildup of dirt around the edges and can affect the suction if it doesn't close properly. Hope this helps!
THIS IS RIDICULOUS shark makes brushes a pain in the ass!!
By the time I do all this, break a nail and lose my temper. They'll be ten years of dirt, cost me thirty at the manicurists and give me a tantrum. This is ridiculous
Thank you so much for video it was great sir.
Love the design of the Shark and the way everything snaps perfectly together. Space age technology. But cleaning it is a weak feature, and makes me long for my old Hoover and Eureka vacuums. Still, watching you go through the paces was consoling. I would only add wearing an old surgical mask (lots around now) when emptying the cannister, maybe even bringing the garbage can outside. LIttle clouds of dust. . . .!
What about the hose
I appreciate the tutorial. Thanks.
My question regarding cleaning roller can I open it up and attack the hair faster
Great video...thanks. Regarding the use of scissors or a seam ripper tool, to clean the brushes, trust me, it's much easier and faster to shave your wife's head than to deal with that mess.
hilarious!
LOL!!!!! you made me laugh out loud! Thanks for that.
LoL
I don't know about that; how well do you know his wife? :)
Anyone remember John Wayne Bobbitt and Lorena Bobbitt -- better safe than sorry!!
Nicely done, sir.
i am trying to get the book to see info on this machine manual so i van buy the filters also
Wow!! Okay, so now I start the big job. (Hate to say it, I don't think I've ever cleaned it. And it smells!) I was about to throw it out and buy a new one.. but I know this one works perfectly well. I think it just needs the cleaning!
Thanks so much! Perhaps it would have been better had I read the manual .... anyway, before this video, I didn't know about the flat, felt filter!!! OMGosh! It was filthy. No wonder the suction was gone. 250 pounds of furry dogs and.... well, you get the picture. Thank you!!
You got purple, I got blue. Besides Kirby, I love Shark. ❤😉
Perfect video just want I needed
This is the hard way... get a screwdriver and take the lower assembly apart... there are six screws that include two beneath the little roller wheels in the front of the vaccuum.... roller comes out -- you can pull all the hair out and clean the roller part with some cleaning mixture and a rag...
William Heckman Thanks for THAT tip
I cut a lot of hair off of the roller and now it don't spin right one side is eating up the plastic roller.
FYI pop the two small wheels on front of vacuum out using flat head screwdriver (& use flat head to pop them back into place). Screws will then be visible to remove. Took me forever to figure that out.
Still trying to figure this out in 2021 :-))))
Thanks for this video.... you have a video on how to clean the hose that gets incredibly filthy at the top near the handle??
You can get a long brush they use to clean dryer lint traps. Take off the hose, run some warm water in the tub or take it outside and use the garden hose. Add some water and soap to the brush then into the hose and rotate it as you go, also collapsing it so it gets smaller, otherwise you'll have trouble removing the brush. It's prone to get a buildup of dirt around the edges and can affect the suction if it doesn't close properly. Hope this helps!
How does one clean the hose? I find that my vacuum gets dust deposits within the ridges.
Yea big time. Had a hugeeeeee clog right in the middle. What works nicely is if you take the hose outside, put an air duster straw in the tube and cover that end with your hand, and just blow it out, that usually gets dust out. If you really want to clean it, pour a little dish soap down the tube and turn the hose on and let it spray thru the tube. Just make sure its dry before you use it
Thanks very helpful wife must be so happy 😀
How do you clean that bottom front filter if it’s dirty in back side Please
Great video and very helpful! Thanks so much.
If the heppa one is dirty can I wash that off as well?
Thank you, kindly. Much appreciated.
Is there any way to clean out the base not the actual where the bristles are but the top part that’s like next to the brush roll indicator? It seems like I have a bunch of stuff in there that I can’t get out I don’t know how to get to it
It's best to clean and empty the canister outdoors while wearing a mask. Never empty this inside your trash can indoors because all the dust just goes back into the house and possibly into your lungs.
But how to clean the rotator filter portion? Can I just put it in the sink too?
Need to know the brush how to open
Thanks for the info Im going to clean my vacuum now
Can i wash the HEPA filter
i was given a used one like this one but the per son removed the tag ( what is the name of the vacuum the model # i need to replace a few things
I washed the heap filter and realized that it doesn't come apart...correct?? Can you wash it??
Burning the hair?! LOL! Now THAT would have been a fun video!
Thank you so much for this video. I have a similar vacuum and it needs cleaning.
Very helpful. Thank you, Sir.
my shark is blocked in the tube near adjust suction cant get to it
How do you clean the front bottom filters of it is dirty on back side Please
Wash it with soap and water, allow it to dry 48 hrs since it's densely packed.
Great video thank you it was very helpful 👍
Greg
Greg here.... seems like you missed a few parts - the hose that comes off on back - and the bottom cups that come off.... P7 in your Manual
BTW - the Manual is goofy in that it shows the very dust filter (attached to the dust cup) as coming out when in fact it does not.
Best,
Greg
How do you clean that screen filter inside the tank? Part of it never even gets wet and it does not come out
Turn it upside down and use a wet soapy bottle brush, rinse and let dry overnight.
@@ForGoodnesSake I've tried that, you can't reach it, with a brush
Thanks for the great video.
I tried to get the bottom base off, so I could clean the see through window, and the brush a little better. Was about 10 screws but still did not come off. I did not want to force it off or I could tell I would not be able to put it back together. I don't think there is a belt (none on the roller) might be buried higher up.
pepa pig
How do you clean the screen filter inside the dust cup? fine dust gets trapped in there and running water in there doesn't help. That fine dust stays in there and if it gets wet and can't get it dry all the way then you get that musty, wet towel smell when you run the vacuum. It would make it so much easier if you could take it out.
Try using a wet soapy bottle brush. Then stick a towel up in it and around the inside so it can dry faster. That's what I do.
0:51 it's just like shakin yer willy
What is Tasy Bite?
Can you hand wash the HEPA filter or does that ruin it?
It’s washable, by hand. I did just finally get a new filter, from Amazon for $6. I tossed the old one in the washer, it looked perfectly fine when I took it out. I let it air dry.
Awesome thank you!
Thank you for doing this video
I've used Lysol (liquid) baking soda & now Borax-fave (!) to clean the icky canister. Qtips are handy for the crevices. In so far as the foam filter, after washing it out 4 or 5 times w/ Dawn, I just ordered a 6 pack from Amazon. It's affordable and you don't need to worry about foam not fully drying and being a ripe habitat for mold.
I wish I had maybe used a hair dryer vs. out on lanai in sun, or in hotter than hot garage to dry, b/c now the filter (that's not removable) is a bit rusted. Any one else have this issue?
WHat about the Hepa Filter in 356e??
Thank you!! Great job!
Very helpful! Thank you...
Thanks for the awesome video Greg. What do you do if that piece below the filter is dirty (In the blue part that says Rotator)? Mine looks pretty dirty. I just cleaned my vacuum for the first time in like a year because I didn't know how to do it until I saw your video (Thanks again!!) So that piece is a little dirty in mine.
Just press the little clip near the top and remove. Its just a white filter, so wash with a little soap.
I've had my shark for about 1 month and just cleaned out canister - even though Shark said not to. I'm used to having bags and not seeing the dust, which bothered me. Hope, I don't mess it up
I wanted to know if you could wash the filter he pulled and showed and put right back in. I used to use air pressure but then my roommate took his compressor toy when he left. Do you have to replace it if you can't air it out? Seems like you have to wash every filter every time you vacuum and I don't even have pets! Ah, I used compressed air from a can, expensive but so is a new vacuum. Also had the corner get bogged up before where the hard plastic hose makes that sharp corner there's a little door for cleanout.
That's the hepa filter, it can be washed and because it's densely packed it takes 48 hrs to dry. That trap door gets gunked up and makes you lose suction if not seated properly. I use a letter opener to get into the crevices and gently scrap off the gunk then wipe clean with a clorax wipe.
What class ring is that?
Lawrence Tech-Michigan
How do you clean out right side hard plastic tube?? I can't find how to remove it :(
Where did you get that round flat piece from? I can't see it on my shark.
Cheap ultrasonic cleaner will bring these filters back to oem state with a bit of dawn & warm water. I cleaned filters until they broke apart, after ultrasonic cleaning I just rinse and have had no issue, plus a lot faster and saves a lot of water
Great video
is there an easy way to clean out the hose itself? mine has dirt inside all the kinks and i don't know how to get it out..
I use a garden hose outside and flush a lot of water through it.
wait...I didn't know you could rinse the canister out. I thought there was something in there that can't be exposed to water?
does that cone mesh filter in the canister actually come out? If so how? Thanks for the vid..
+neil s I have not tried to take it out. I'm able to clean it good enough while it is attached.
I use a hand vac with a narrow nozzle to clean all the parts such as filters, cannisters, and hose inlets, even the hepa air discharge filter No dry time needed. Brush though is a bear. if dirt and dampness are sucked in, it's tooth brush and Simple Green time as the dirt becomes sticky like syrup. the NEW Bissell animal brush can withstand wet vacuuming with little issue.
Good Job
thank you very much i know how to clean a vacuum but not how to take these fancy ones apart and my parents are old and wont help me with anything anymore lol
Can we clean the other filter that you took out and didn't wash? Mine is black but it looks like it's paper material
Yes. It is black from the motor. Use some soap to clean and rinse.
They sell two foam, two felt, and one hepa filter replacements on Amazon for $13
my ZZ550 is dead . Got it 4 years ago and the motor died. It was a good machine but painfully not warranty. No repair centers either. I can not even find it on the website! :(
I think I must be confused about the filters. I thought the HEPA filter is the last filter you pulled out and checked. How often must that one filter be replaced and can it be washed and reused?
+Terry Haney once a year, and you can wash it, i would let it dry for up to 48 hours
I advise using William Heckman's instructions below and incorporating that into the video. I needed to know where those hidden screws were located under the small wheels so I could take the roller brush out and clean it more thoroughly.
Swithin Chandler isn't this ridiculous? I want to do the same freaking thing wtf?
Do you have to wash the canister and filter after every use?
i wash the filter every week and the canister every month
+Yentrokbux The foam filter needs 24 to 48 hours to dry before you replace it. You need to make sure the inside of it is dry or you may have problems with fungus and bacteria. I also recommend washing the foam filter with sanitizing hand soap. It breaks up the dirt and kills the germs.
how do you clean the hepa filter in the front
You cannot clean a hepa filter. It must be replaced.
TY very much
you can kind of clean that hepa filter. if you sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, you'll see that filter can collect a lot of powder. remove the filter and tap it on the floor.a lot of debris will pop out. a high suction vac hand vac with narrow tube works for me. my portable
