Arsenal are gearing up to host Southampton at the Emirates Stadium for their last game before the international break, and they’re hoping it’ll be a pretty straightforward match.
Southampton are sitting 19th in the Premier League, having lost five of their first six games, and their manager, Russell Martin, is already feeling the heat.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have had a tough run of fixtures but remain unbeaten, even after facing the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain recently-all while dealing with several key injuries.
The international break should give some players a chance to recover, and those who’ve played every game might finally get some rest. But before that, Mikel Arteta’s squad is focused on securing three points against Southampton.
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has weighed in, saying that while Southampton might seem like an easier game, Arteta shouldn’t take any chances with his team selection.
Merson has now told Sportskeeda that despite expecting a comfortable victory against Southampton, Arteta must select a full-strength team, and pointed out the scare Arsenal suffered against Leicester City last week.
“Arsenal were cruising against Leicester but ended up conceding twice in that game before snatching a late win. The fact that they eventually managed to get all three points in that game is commendable. So I’m backing Arsenal to secure a comfortable win - four goals to nothing,” he predicted.
“Mikel Arteta has to go full strength with his line-up for this fixture. When you’re in a title race with likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, you cannot afford to drop anyone from your best line-up.”
Should Arsenal rotate against Southampton?
Arsenal have quite a few players fighting for more first-team action, including Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling, so this could be the perfect chance to give Bukayo Saka a breather.
Mikel Merino and Ethan Nwaneri are also pushing for their first Premier League starts of the season, with Merino recently returning from injury to make his debut against PSG.
Jurrien Timber had to come off at half-time in that same PSG match, but with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu likely still out, there’s hope the Dutchman will be fit to face Southampton.
If there aren’t any more injury concerns, Arteta might go with a full-strength lineup to lock in a convincing win, especially with the international break coming up.
If there were a midweek fixture after Southampton, there’d be a good reason to rotate the squad. But for now, with the team firing on all cylinders, there’s no need to mess with the setup too much.
