The reason people don't like it is because it's more experimental and in your face, and has a less commercial/mainstream style compared to Madonna's other music. It's far superior to say Hung Up IMO, and while Sorry is a great song, Confessions on a Dancefloor is a lot more radio-friendly than American Life. I love American Life though, the fact it's more brash and experimental is why I like it.
American life is probably the most underrated project ever in mainstream pop music!!! Such a damn good album. The trilogy Ray of light/Music/American life is pure pop greatness!
@@popunderrated I LOVED this so much!! You did such a good job! I am now a fan and will watch all your clips. Please could you do more clips like this on Madonna's albums when you have time?
One of my favourites, My flat/apartment was broken into the day this was released I had every possession stolen I had nothing; I listened to this album and just cried, so this album has a special meaning to me. 😍
Hearing the Jem demo of Nothing Fails really goes to show how an artist and their voice can really make or break a song. The Jem version doesn't interest me tbh. The Madonna version genuinely gives me chills.
Loved this, it such an underrated Album, love all the songs on this. I didn't realise that Nothing Fails was written by Jem, a great song.. i wasn't sure if it was one of the singles released.. now i do. ;) I do think Rebel Heart has a very similar sound to this album in ways.
In my opinion this was Madonnas last great album. I do love Confessions but AL is very personal and prophetic. Just like "Erotica" (which was my favorite Madonna project from day one) this is one her most overlooked and underrated albums. It is impossible to to explain Madonna to Millenials and Gen Z. You had to be there to believe it! Madonna singlehandedly changed pop music for decades to come. It was joyride to be her fan and follow her career. Also the withdraw of the AL video was the beginning of her creative downfall. She lost her mojo after CODF completely. I have never ever listened to A Madonna album fully since. I didn't want her to end up like this. I used to love her...
It's not surprising that even most of her "longtime fans", don't seem to really get what Madonna is as an artist - I think she's cursed for being the best artist of all-time with the stupidest fans - every time they say anything negative about post-COADF Madonna, it actually speaks more about themselves rather than her. She gave one of her best albums in 2019, and I love that Madame X is so radical, subversive and bizarre of an album, it just reveals how stupid most of her "fans" are.
Gen Z maybe , as for millennials - not necessarily. I’m a millennial and I’ve been Madonna’s fan since the late 1990s early 2000s and she’s always been the queen of pop for me on par with the king of pop Michael Jackson. Also she was very big in Europe (where I’m from) in the 2000s.
For me, this album failed due to a lot of these pre album interviews. I just remember a lot of them being awkward. The songs seemed so slow compared to even what the rock artists did at that time lmao. I’m surprised to see her admit this to Matt Laurier. She was right. It just seemed like a really boring choice for the queen of pop- her dance music and ballads are amazing! Either she would be really mean to the host and fans or it would be vice versa for her. The Die Another smash hit came out almost a year after American life debuted. The Hollywood video single came out almost a year after the American life video came out. I just remember as high school person (mind you this is the era right before MySpace and iPods..) I was thinking that I l wanted to spend my thirty bucks on the latest JLO or Beyoncé CD out at that time. I also felt like she thought that she might have had the power to make this out of a smash hit album. I loved Madem X thought! Her comeback game is strong! I recently became a big fan of hers again.
@@rvegas81 You got all mixed up. Die Another Day premiered BEFORE American Life, in October 2022 which is 5 months before AL. Hollywood video came out in June which is only 3 months after American Life single.
I always loved it, I think it's one of her bests... to me, her ever best are : Bedtime stories, Ray of Light, Music, American Life and Confessions on a dancefloor.... after Confessions, she was getting just more and more mediocre.
Rebel Heart wasn’t mediocre. It was very relevant production wise to the time and also to what was supposed to come. Madame X is one of her best albums creatively
IMO Hard Candy should have been her Final Album and after Hard Candy it would've Been better if she just Toured. The 10's were not Good For her career.
American Life is a much better album than Music. Much more cohesive and better songs. I think it is marginally better than Ray of Light. I know many people hate the production but I really dig it. That the general population didn't 'get it' is a crying shame as she never did anything this edgy again..nothing after American Life is as good as that album and I include Confessions.. Favourite song Nothing Fails - Like a Prayer ish but better...
This is really well done and a pleasure to watch. I am a big fan of most of this album and it has a lot of strengths (i.e. Hollywood, Easy Ride, Die Another Day, Nobody Knows Me and I also like AL itself) - still sounds fantastic also.
This album isn’t regarded as “misunderstood” … most critics feel the same about it now as they did then. Was it ambitious? Yes, for the most part. Was it well-executed? No, for the most part.
It would be really interesting to find out the reason by Music. This is my own opinion, but I feel that Music was the album that changed Madonna’s career… for the worse. I say this because it came off the back of Ray of Light, which not do I find it one of her best pieces of work, but a stand out for any artist. She showed that she had grown in a singer, song writer, woman, mother and fully fleshed out human. Then with Music it felt like she had regressed with all the terrible experimentation with Electro and it sounded like she was chasing the youth market has been doing that ever since and now she is just a parody of herself.
Not in my Top 10 Favorite Madonna albums but I like all of her albums (minus MDNA), so it's still a great record. X-Static Process is my favorite song here. I love how risky and experimental the album is. The unreleased material was great too
Ah! I forgot to recommend Atomic Kitten to you. They should never be forgotten lol. And Gina G! Remember her? With that album cover where she was covered in chocolate? I wish I still had all my cds 😕
I remember feeling really disappointed after having bought this cd and playing it, hoping for it to improve and it only getting worse with each track. One of the worst music purchases of my life.
This album is freaking incredible. I hate that people dont like it. Imo Ray Of Light / Music / American Life is a PERFECT trio.

absolutely. that 6 year era (1998-2004) was a musical journey. loved it.

This has always been my favorite Madonna album. Im glad fans have finally started to give this album the credit it deserves.
X- tatic Process is my favorite Madonna song of all time. So beautiful.
This is probably my favourite Madonna album, so a great watch. Also loved all the backstage footage.
The album is definitely artistic and one of my favorite eras but it has so much more potential with all the songs she left out !
Can’t believe I’m just seeing this. Thank you 🙏 please do more

Nothing can ever match Madonna's singing, she sounds so damn mystical, it can't be taught or learned
Excellent Deep Dive, I became a fan during the American Life era, one of mt favourite Madonna albums
Thanks for watching!
Gosh those outtakes are actually better than some of the official album tracks... It s so cool should have made it
One of her best eras ever!!!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩, remembering 2003 like it was yesterday
Those unreleased tracks are incredibly beautiful ❤✨😍 ... Record companies executives must have been really dumb to have pushed those tracks aside 🥺
Clearly my favorite album from Madonna, since day 1. I absolutely love all the songs, no leftover
