That woman at the end was Veronica Cartwright who not only played the main little girl in The Birds, she was also Lambert in Alien. She doesn't get enough credit.
Her scream, snuffling, crying, is very distinctive. I didn't notice it my first watch of IOTBS, but it was clearer on subsequent watches. She can induce a low, crawling panic just by using her voice.
Indeed. She was also part of the main cast of "Lost In Space."
Veronica has made a career out of being hysterical and she's fantastic at it. I always think of her in Alien and Witches of Eastwick. Had no idea she's the little girl in The Birds, but it makes so much sense.
Veronica Cartwright gives great unhinged. 🤪
@@corvus1970 That was Angela Cartwright in Lost in Space. I was always “Penny” when we played lost in space 😂
It's nice to see that even in '78 Goldblum was doing Goldblum things. They just hand him a script and let him be himself. What a life.
He's just one of those people who's fun to watch, no matter what they do.
He's the best part of Annie Hall. Literally has one line. Camera glides past him and he's some random guy on the phone saying "I forgot my mantra." I die laughing every time.
Jeff Goldblum is a blessing in anything he is in.
OOOOOOH.... ERMMMMMM..... UMMMM..... MMMM.....
LIFE ERRR FINDS A WAY.
@@Lethgar_Smith I love David Duchovny's impersonation of him on SNL back in summer of 1998.
So in the original script Veronica Cartwright read, she and Donald Sutherland we’re supposed to walk by, wink at each other, then keep walking, so she was really surprised when Donald Sutherland did the screaming point at the end because of the Director wanted to get an authentic reaction from her
Poor Veronica Cartwright! She had a similar experience with director Ridley Scott in ‘Alien’. He did not tell her what was coming. Her reactions at the ‘infamous’ moment in ‘Alien’ was real!
@@tehawesomeface1337 Yes--- the notorious chest-burster/dinnerr table scene. Very cool.
noice!
And in The Birds, Alfred Hitchcock told her that fake birds were going to attack her. Instead, he used real birds. She had no idea. Her reaction is real.
@@michelegraham1181 Veronica was not attacked by real birds. The studio would not try that with a minor. The movie's lead character was played by Tippi Hedren-- an actress who was mistreated by Hitchcock, in more ways than one. Hedren had live birds hurled at her during the attic sequence where Melanie Daniels foolishly goes upstairs alone with a flashlight.
R.I.P., Donald Sutherland
He was a really demanding and fussy person on the set, according to several directors. Up there with Faye Dunaway behavior. Egos sometimes become as big as planets in showbiz. Good actor, though. I liked him as Homer Simpson (not a typo there, haha) in the 1975 epic "Day of the Locust", a memorable and dark tale of how Hollywood of the 1930s was both a dream destination and also a place of bashed hopes and unhappy endings.
Its interesting that Matthew was capable to kill his own replacement clone, but he couldn't bring himself to kill Elizabeth's. Thats a very human trait and a definite advantage for the body snatchers.
This scene - 8:22 - was brilliant, because it was a homage to the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1956. That actual actor (Kevin McCarthy), who was freaking out and banging on their car windshield, was the man from the original movie who figured out everything that was going on, and that movie (if I remember correctly) ended with him running the streets screaming and warning anyone who was still human that everyone else were no longer human.
Also, the taxi driver was the director of the original film
That's how it SHOULD'VE ended,
but instead a more hopeful,
optimistic ending was added on.
You're correct.
"They're here already!! You're next!!"
I absolutely love that guy, he even made another cameo in Joe Dante's Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
I came here to comment that. His cameo in the middle of this movie trecreating that secene towards the end of the original was brilliant, and told you then and there tyhis movie wasn't going to just be a copy (so to speak).
"Can you tell I'm not... root-ing for him?" Thank you, Kat. I needed this laugh today.
The man-faced dog that only makes squeals and banjo noises has haunted my nightmares for _decades_ now. And that ending still gives me full body goosebumps, no matter how many times i see it. Not just because it's a horrifying image, and it means our last character is doomed. But because i've always gotten the impression that she really was the last human on earth, and we just watch our species die out at the end.
This is really the most horrifying situations I can think of.
I just left a Comment saying, like you, that dog with the human face haunted me for years. Yes! Decades, actually!!
8:08 Love this scene where she's describing the city seemingly changing overnight, frantically walking around anxious and confused as people are giving her empty stares. Great portrayal of alienation.
This is why I would like to see this done like a mini-series. To see the changes through 2 - 3 episodes. Slowly 1 city is taken but the pods are slowly and quietly moved outward, expanding. Building the tension and dread.
@@jasonondik6003 Yes, I agree, there's great material there for a series. In the movie, the switch from the invaders having to operate covertly to the humans having to do so seems to happen (literally) overnight. There's a lot to explore there: Who do the invaders target and how do they avoid being noticed, maybe the humans do some research and discover something about the pods that helps them, etc...
@Jay_delachance I wholeheartedly agree. My only complaint with this movie is that, for obvious time constraint reasons, the invasion and take over feels rushed. Logically time has lapsed for the characters, probably a week to 10 days, but it does feel like the entire movie, save the last few minutes in D.C. at the end, happens in 3 days.
I love this masterpiece - I'll NEVER forget seeing the ending the first time
"Don't touch it. It's got hair all over it. You don't know where it's been."
That was good advice when I was in college in the 70's. 😁
LOL.
That might just be sound advice forever
😂Made my day!
Okay had to give the video a pause... the entertainment that Kat got from the slapping 'massage' is priceless. 11:05
15:44 "Plant boy knows he's there!" Calling him plant boy while being alarmed. 🤣
16:22 "The hunted is now the huntee." So, no change then Kat? 😁
16:59 "Can you tell I'm not... root-ing for him?" No need for the sad, apologetic face Kat, watching your reactions has braced us for this sort of thing. 😄
The way Donald Sutherland points and screams at the end is the same reaction everyone had when they saw someone cough in 2020.
LOL, your look of utter shock and disappointment at the end was priceless, Kat! 😂
But you gotta admit, that was a great way to end this kind of movie. Very realistic to the situation.
"I'm sorry" as a reaction to the dog scene, is the most canadian thing ever. 😂
Brooke Adams is also in The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken directed by David Cronenberg
And she's in another horror flick, from about the same time period as this one, called Shock Waves.
Christopher Walk-ind on Natalie Wood
Now you're ready for The Faculty Kat! It's a great 90's teen horror with an A+ cast (Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Clea Duvall, Famke Janssen), a rockin soundtrack of cover songs, and directed by Robert Rodriguez.
yeah, that's a good movie.
The Faculty is a very underrated film.
I also loved Robert Patrick's minor side role too.
I was going to suggest "The Faculty" but you guys beat me to it but listen to us Kat, it's a fun flick!
However I will suggest 2 lesser known low budget alien movies that might be worth a watch, "The Hidden" & "The Borrower 1991"
Lol I hated that movie.
probably my favorite t-shirt I have has that end scene Donald Sutherland pointing with his mouth open
I stand by it when I say that you are one of the funniest women on RUclips. A hilariously, entertaining channel that covers the best movies in history. Quite honestly. 🎉🎉🎉
72tadrian65, 100% agree
This is an intensely creepy movie, and it’s so unsettling to realize that you can’t stay awake forever, so you’ll eventually get replaced as well, but you still fight it as long as you can.
To some extent it was a foreshadowing of Nightmare on Elm Street. I bet Wes Craven also saw this movie and took the necessary time to sleep as an input. He added though the dream aspect in his movies.
This movie is a masterpiece of suspense that gets better on each watch as you pick up on clues you missed before. I’ve seen this a dozen times and I still see more each viewing.
The priest on the swing is Robert Duvall!
One of the very few remakes that I actually like (a rarity). Others being The Thing (1982), Scar Face (1983), Nosferatu the Vampire (1979), and Cat People (1982).
The Fly
The best part of the cat people was David Bowie
@@Morris1581 Ok. I'll add the 80's Blob too. (now that I think about it).
@@mztweety1374 "been putting out fire, .. . with GASOLINE!!!!!!!!"
Love it, “avert your gaze” makes me laugh every time 😂😂
"She's drinking a lot of water for someone who isn't a plant!" lmao
This iteration of Body Snatchers is a little underrated among the many great horror films of the 70s. Excellent cast. And Veronica Cartwright is an underrated horror MVP between this, The Birds, and Alien.
Can people please stop calling films that are universally praised "underrated?" That implies that it's typically not liked. This is absolutely not the case. It has a critics score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 82%. That's incredibly highly-rated.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks The majority of those critics reviews that are calculated in the RT score are from modern day reviews, not contemporaneous reviews when the film was first released. Sure it's held in high esteem now, but back then it had its share of detractors including from very prominent critics like Janet Maslin and Roger Ebert. Furthermore, when I was growing up back in the 90s most people I know swore by the original 1956 version - I hadn't heard of the 1978 adaptation until I went to college.
And Scary Movie 2😂.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks It wasn't quite appreciated by critics at the time, but nowadays it is a VERY well-regarded film, as most people acknowledge just how BRILLIANT and well-made it is. I don't think underrated quite applies currently.
@@MarshallFlores This and the original version are nearly universally loved, with some preferring one or the other, but loving both. The one that catches a little more flak is the 90s one, since it had a more direct-to-video quality...but I think it's still a great film (and used the more modern techniques to do some pretty gruesome stuff with the pods and play around with the concept a bit more)
A landmark in that special little genre, the *paranoia* movie. :) Rosemary's Baby is another in the group.
This movie has been redone four or five times, but I think this is easily the best one. Thanks for doing it, I love your channel! :)
yes, the original 1956 version, then 1978, saw both on network TV, 1993 and 2007, which I saw both at the theaters. the pod people need this message. for those going through the comments, I've got good news. God is good because He gives His blessings to everyone, whether they be good or bad. but everyone has at least, told a lie, or stolen something in their life. and that makes them sinners, and God will not allow sinners in heaven; in His presence, because He is holy. so, God has to punish the sinners in hell, because God is severe and just. but God is also love and He made a way for some to be saved from His wrath. here are the steps:
1. admit that you're a sinner and are lost.
2. realize that the penalty of sin is death (hell).
3. believe that Jesus (who is God) died on the cross, was buried, then rose from the grave, to pay the penalty for man's past, present, and future sins.
4. trust Christ alone as your Savior, and not on your own good deeds to get you to heaven (nor a combination of your faith and self-righteous works).
5. pray to God NOW that you're accepting Christ's free gift of salvation because if you die before making this decision, it's too late, and you'll 🔥🥵😈
6. and to be a disciple, tell people about Jesus, read the bible, go to church regularly to know God's will for your life.
Agreed. ‘70s Hollywood just knew how to end a movie.
The late 70s to late 80s were a real golden age where remakes/reboots exceeded their predecessors (Body Snatchers, The Thing, The Fly, The Blob). There have been a whole lot of forgettable remakes in the years since (Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Poltergeist, Psycho, and I can't even track what version of Halloween is currently being re-recycled again).
You got the original 50s one, then this one, then one in the 90s called just "Body Snatchers", and then Nicole Kidman's "Invasion" in the noughties (Kinda the odd one out because here it's a virus that turns humans into aliens who can turn others by vomiting their acid onto them, rather than plants creating replicas). Only seen this and Invasion, so I can't exactly say which one is the best (this IS better than Invasion, which is OK but nothing on this film), but this film is one of my favorites ever, so there.
Even with the studio imposed happy ending,I prefer the original B/W 50s Body Snatchers movie. But that's just me.
"Oh this thing must spread thru the plants, let me go nap in the garden." 🤣
Hi Kat! This was a classic look at cold war era paranoia. The dude who was ranting (and bounced off the protaganists car) while being quietly chased down by a mob was the star of the original movie from the 50s. Of course Spock was an alien!
The Taxi driver is the director of the original also
I'd say the original was the Cold War analogy, and this one involved more of the 1970s growth of psychiatry, self-help therapy and questioning personal identity. Nimoy being the perfect embodiment of that particular paranoia and untrustworthiness, in that it's impossible to tell when he first became one of "them"!
@@thebigdentist251If they made it today it could be a metaphor for the new woke/trans cult.
@@beestingza Spot-on.👍
When I was about 5 I woke up at night and walked out into the living room and my parents were watching this movie. I walked in right when the man/dog came on screen. That thing gave me nightmares until I was about 12. I’m 38 now and that thing still creeps me out.
“If you’re going to be a priest on a swing you’d better smile.” 😂😂
Wasn't that Robert Duvall?
@@yutubetom Correct.
The old man who almost got run over, yelling, 'They're here!' was played by Kevin McCarthy, who played the Donald Sutherland role in the version from 1956. Kinda nifty.
I cringed at that scene. A younger Kevin McCarthy in 1956 running into traffic, trying to get people to stop and warn them! Yelling: “They’re here! They’re here!” It hit me! It’s 1978 and he’s still yelling “They’re here!”
@@tehawesomeface1337 I always took it as an homage rather than a canon story point. Still, that IS pretty damn funny. 🙂
Love that movie. Pretty underrated, but IMO one of the best horror movies of the 70s.
Okay, no. This film is not "underrated." I've never encountered anyone who didn't think it was brilliant. It's one of those rare remakes that is often regarded as superior to the original.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks OK, maybe underrated was not the right word. When it comes to horror-movies of that time period, you always get stuff like The Omen, The Exorcist, Halloween etc. (not saying those are not good movies too), but a lot of people down even know Body Snatchers. What I meant was, it's not as popular/well know, or it's been"forgotten". IMO it would deserve to be right up there with the other 70s classics.
I can't remember if it was 60s or 70s but Cronenberg had one about a gated community in a highrise, and it holds up surprisingly well especially considering it doesn't have the cast this movie does... it almost makes it feel more real when you can't recognize most of the actors though, feels like you're watching a snuff film or something (especially first five minutes or so)
@@EarnestEgregore Could be Cronenbergs "Shivers" from 1975
yes definitely that one @@mrtveye6682
29:49 "the real horror of this movie is they didn't pay their cab fare" 😁
I think my favorite thing about Kat's puns is the way you can see in her eyes that she knows exactly what evil she is committing, but she can't stop herself. It makes me chuckle.
22:50 that little filibuster on half gloves LOL
A new Kat video always makes the top of my favorite moments of the week list! So much fun as always! LOL "Things did NOT GO AS PLANT' 🤣🤣🤣
I always considered this one to be more sci-fi than horror. Arguably better than the original. The usual entertaining reaction Kat!!
The original is REALLY good, but, yeah, the 1978 iteration is a much better film.
The concept is sci-fi, but that last scene is the sheer _definition_ of horror. And yes, this version's the best.
The dog person was the homeless guy playing the banjo in the beginning of the movie and his dog. The pod combined the two, probably because it malfunctioned when Matthew kicked it.
"They're all plants, it's a garden" LMAO
the look on your face at the end was worth the wait
In a world gone crazy, we have Kat to escape and enjoy her horror movie reactions. Thanks
I just love your reactions. Thank you so much for entertaining us!
My favorite cameo of all time is Kevin McCarthy from the 1956 film still warning people about the Pod people
It's almost Christmas! You know what that means? Gremlins! 😉
"I'm not.. rooting.. for him" LOL. One of my favourite films. Great choice Kat. Week 11 asking for Fright Night (1985). We need Kat to watch a great vampire film!
You are tons of fun! Love your corny puns, too. I'm rooting for you!
One of the best ending scenes in film history, such a great twist and shot. I also love how it is for the most part an oppressively 'silent' apocalypse. Other movies that while very different do the same thing extremely well are Pulse(2001) and the recent
When Evil Lurks(2023). It is such a hard thing to pull off but Invasion does it so well. Great reaction as always.
Kat with the puns! Love it. This one really grows on you, right? It plants the seeds of doubt. It dangles a little pod of hope, then snatches it away again.
At 4:38, Kat inadvertently gives us a voiceover for the trailer of a horror movie that doesn't exist, but really should:
"They're working together in an intricate system.
They're communicating...somehow.
It's not even... (music swells as the movie's title is revealed) GARBAGE DAY!"
Top Five best horror movie final moment! The look on Sutherland's face... the zoom INTO said face... the finger pointing! PERFECTION!!!
that blonde woman giving the man a massage was Veronica Cartwright the actress who played Lambert in the movie alien
This movie came out "before" John Carpenter's The Thing, so more accurately, The Thing would be more "Invasion of the Body Snatchers-Esque", LOL.
Imagine seeing that ending as a 13 year old kid. Traumatizing, heart wrenching even now.
Kat’s freakishly large smile gives me life
I think the taxi driver is Don Segal, the director of the original Invation of the Body Snatchers.
Yep, and he worked with Clint Eastwood on a few films as well
Kat i watched this as a 10 kid when shown on UK tv & it traumatised me that i started thinking my family were aliens 😂😂😂😂
As always a fun entertaining witty reaction.
Your awesome 🖒🖒🖒
That girl at the end became a highly acclaimed actress but I guess you could say that for all in the cast
Suggestion for on site viewing: Stephen Kings "1408" with John Cusack. You just need a hotel room! room 1408 would be great, but any hotel room will make this movie 10 times scarier!
This here is a great idea and I second it. "A hotel room" is a fairly easy on-location reaction.
The puns were the real horror. :D
The main character is played by Donald Sutherland, a famous Canadian actor. You might recognize his son, Kiefer Sutherland who played in “Lost Boys”
The doll’s little eye-roll at the “rooting” joke 😂
kat, your jokes are always on point (gotta hand it to ya). your whole energy, if you will, is simply incredible. you're such a cool person whose charm is only equaled by your wit. that's enough compliments for now lol. anyways, i'm so very glad you watched this!
Find someone who looks at you the way Kat looks at Jeff Goldblum
Ah Kat @ 20:30 into your video, when you trusted Spock.... you are now a plant based human. :)
The surprise ending was hidden from the executives on the film. Director, writer, and Sutherland came up with it the morning of the shoot and decided to do it.
Always was curious about this movie. Never actually watched, but it was been referenced in pop media. The last scene was true the most nightmarish thing you could experience😥this poor woman was alone all along!! Great reaction and huge fan for quite a while now Crimson Peak is an amazing gothic horror movie with Tom Hiddleston , Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska! One of my favorite movies!
I first saw this in the theatre when I was about twelve. I didn't get scared, largely because I kept having to tell my younger friend sitting next to me what was going on in a very loud voice. He was too short to see over the seat.
This is definitely not Kat. Body snatched for sure. This Kat is not wearing a gray t-shirt.
xD Good one! :D
'The Faculty' is a fun 90's high school version of the Body Snatchers that I recommend.
Kat, for what it's worth, I think your puns were right on the money. Especially the one in the thumbnail. LOL!
The original 50's version is great as well. It really delved into the fears of that time period: specifically The Red Scare.
Kat's suspicious of everyone, then trusts Leonard Nimoy who just moments later shatters her trust! lol
This isn't the original and I know of at least one remake, but this is still the best one in my opinion.
Great reaction, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! As someone who worked in and hiked all over San Francisco for over 20 years, it's so interesting seeing all these familiar locations as they were back in 1978.
One of my favorite movies! I watch it a couple times a year. That ending! When you think Matthew is still normal & trying to blend in only to learn he had been replaced, that final screech!
"ROOTING" for him! oh that delivery was everything! fantastic. well done Kat👏
One of the scariest movie endings ever! This ties with The Mist for shocking horror endings
This is where the term pod people came from. The man who got hit by the car is the star of the original version. Garbage trucks have never bothered me before this! Great choice, can't wait to see what you have next in store!
Leaf it to Kat to make some great pod people plant puns.
The timing at 20:15 is hilarious
Hi Kat! Did you know that the main character of this movie, played by Donald Sutherland, is the father of actor Kiefer Sutherland who was one of the vampires in The Lost Boys? He's also in a movie named, "Flatliners" (1990), with Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt. Kiefer is also in the Stephen King adapted movie, "Stand By Me" (1986).
Excellent movie all around and your "rooting for him" joke made me snort lol. A little ice cream and a new video from you and I've got a good night.
A fantastic reaction as always!!! You are amazing! I just watched "Dena" and "Russet season" and have to say from one actor to another, you are tremendously talented and your naturality is perfect. You've always been prepossessing and with your level if skill and talent, you are a force to be reckoned with! 👏
Your reaction to the end scene then cut to the credits was pure gold. You’re amazing 😭
Something really genius about this one and how it taps into some kind of primal fear that everyone has about the people around them being replaced by emotionless monsters. Great reaction.
Interestingly, the glove Leonard Nimoy's character wears is the kind that people might wear to cover up a burn or other injury. It was added to make the character stand out and be more distinctive.
When it comes to movies, I usually end up wanting to bang my head because of all the chatty folks. But your videos? They're a breath of fresh air! Your jokes are hilarious and I find myself eagerly waiting for your reactions to the jump scares. You're killing it, keep up the great work!
This is the movie that gave birth to the term “pod people”
Actually the term “pod people” originated in the 1950s film, which was the first invasion of the bodies snatchers. This movie is just a remake, but very good. Body Snatchers which came out in 1993 is a fun watch too.
Great movie, but such an upsetting ending! That final shot of Donald Sutherland is an all time great single frame shot!
And yeah, including my usual please watch Ready Or Not post as well! 😉
Philip Kaufman did a masterful job of creating one of the most unsettling, unpleasant, paranoia inducing, creepy, and depressing atmospheres in film history. I’m even feeling it now just by watching this heavily edited reaction video
True. That last scene alone is one of the most bleak, hopeless moments I ever watched. Has stuck in my head since I first watched that movie back as a teen in the early 80s.
I recently discovered your Chanel and must say I'm loving it. It's refreshing to see your initial reactions to classic horror. Love the puns and "Real horror of this movie" comments. Keep up the great work
The concept of the movie is very scary, not knowing who to trust, and one of the scariest things is Donald Sutherland's hair, that thing is terrifying
The real horror of this movie is that Kat never found the REAL horror of this movie.😆
If you wanna see the arthouse version of this? Look up Under the Skin. Would easily be the weirdest and/or trippiest movie you've ever done on the channel.
Oh! And if that leaves you wanting more? Phil Tippett's Mad God.
I don't know if I'd call "Under the Skin" an arthouse version of this film, per se, but it's one of the most underrated sci-fi films in recent memory. So unique and definitely trippy, but great.
I think that the Dog/human hybrid was because Matt damaged the seed pod, or it could be because the dog and the human were close together.
If you like Donald Sutherland and want to watch another good horror film, try "Don't Look Now", a very scary film. Not many people have reacted to it, so you could be the second! :)
Maybe the damaged pod had trouble separating both individual beings and just went with whatever it managed to get, hence that abomination.
I believe the little half glove thing is for archery.
One of the best endings to a horror movie ever! Lol, loved your disappointed reaction at the end; that's exactly how one should feel seeing that ending if the movie's not been spoiled for them. :) The 1950's version has a slightly more hopeful ending; if you would prefer to have that thought in your head, check it out. Love how you use humor to deflect your fear. You're very amusing to watch. As a kid, my brothers and I would randomly point and scream at each other after seeing this movie, which was always good for a laugh. So glad you've seen this classic!
"He's wearing green cuz he is a plant." 😅
Matthew was played by Donald Sutherland who is Keifer Sutherland's dad. Kevin McCarthy is the older man who slams into the car early on, he was the lead character in the original movie. Nimoy had the idea to wear the half glove as just to make his character more distinct. Looks to be a modified archers or a golfers glove, both have one finger styles.
8:24 if I remember correctly, the did screaming "they're coming" here was the actor from the original movie.
