I guess all cultures have what are referred to as poor man's or struggle meals..but the funny thing is they are often remembered as some of the best meals because they were made with love and filled our bellies. Simply put..comfort food.
Completely agree! When I was in my 20s I bought and made a lot of processed foods and have gradually gravitated towards simple meals made from basics. Now I don't know how I ever lived on the expensive bagged meals from the freezer section. I end up making a lot if very inexpensive foods and love them.
Good points. What's interesting to me also is that a lot of the modern meals use tons of ingredients, but the poor mans meals use maybe 2 or 3 only. In a situation with scarcity you want to know how to cook with fewer ingredients not more. But people don't think about this anymore. People who know tons of recipes over night could become obsolete because they can't cook any of those meals in scarcity when they might only have 1 or 2 ingredients.
You don't have to eat the same meal everyday. Fried rice: remove the meat from the bone and fry along with the rice and peas. Soup: simmer the leg to create a broth for soup until the meat falls of the bone, remove bones then add the rice and peas. Creamed chicken: simmer the leg to create a broth, when tender remove the bones, Add cornstarch, salt, pepper and water slurry to create gravy. Simmer until thick add peas and serve over rice. Four different meals with only slight variations of same ingredients.
This was a very nice video, l like how you share not every one can afford a full pantry or a garden, these are challenging times for many people, and showing how to make a meal for a dollar or less is very helpful to many people. ❤️🙏🏻❤️
My chef son clued me in on this secret - the best time to buy prime cut beef is in late November / early December. People are spending money on Christmas presents and cutting their food budget. He buys in bulk for his family during that time and freezes for the next few months
I checked the reduced meat section every time I go to the store, and at one store in particular as I know their quality of meat is very high. I also check the day old bread rack at the Kroger store near my home when I go there. Find some good deals sometimes. It's a good way to save money and fill your freezer, I always aggravate my wife by telling her " I picked some stuff up in the used meat department " she gives me hell about using that description but she knows what I mean. I worked in commercial kitchens and other food service businesses for about 13 years before I was married and I learned quite a bit about cutting cost when preparing food. In all I loved the video, keep it up you're one of my favorite RUclipsrs. God bless
I used to work in a restaurant and they cut the hot sauce with butter and shake it in a bowl. Could thrown in any seasonings you like garlic powder, Parmesan cheese, onion powder, etc :)
I admire your resourcefulness. We are putting the garden to sleep for the winter here in the Rockies. The small property repairs are nearly completed for the year. We are fortunate and grateful to be comfortable in our little ranch house.
Excellent video. Knorr rice and pasta packets can be a life saver. They are cheap, and easy to make, and fill you up. Knorr chicken pasta, cream soup, a little water and some chicken meat is a tasty meal!
I check for and purchase reduced meat everytime I go to the store. It is an awesome way to get grass fed, organic, or regularly costly goods affordably!!! Great video, as always! *pets to Rocky*
Just found your channel today. Very happy to see a lady who tells it like it is. People need to get out of their bubble and enjoy what they have. I do. Glad to find you. ~Babcia
I buy a big old pork loin about once every couple of months at Costco and cut it up into individual loin chops then freeze them, 2 to a baggie. That's a meal for me and my hubby. The last one cost me about $13 for 8 lbs. Divided into 2 4-oz chops - total of 16 meals. Cost was 81 cents per meal. Add a baked potato and a small salad and voila! Complete meal for around $1. For 2 people!!
I noticed that the majority of your preps are in that side pantry- #10 cans of various stuff and then you just live on your fresh food. That's so smart. Is there a video about your prepping method?? Thanks. Enjoyed this video alot.
People should learn to eat leftovers and stop throwing out so much food. Nobody wanted breakfast early so I made brunch. My chicken eggs, bisquits, a little bit of bacon I had left in the frig and a pan of potatoes. I got 30 pounds of potatoes free in the dumpster.
Knorr makes a tomato chicken bullion cube (Caldo de tomate) that makes amazing Spanish style rice with whatever rice you have on hand. It’s sold in the Mexican section of the grocery store. I hope Rocky got some peanut butter as a reward for catching the mouse.
I love so many of your vlogs but your food/cooking vlogs are my favorite. The possibilities with just a few dollars is well..... it's just so incredible.
The dead mouse at the end!🤣🤣 Have Funny Story: That's what happened with my Maine Coon cat. While I was staying at my grandfather's house when I was in college (we were getting worried about him because he left skillets, coffee makers on or left doors unlocked. So I kept an eye on him and was closer to college campus). I would let my cat wander around and he could get into the garage. In middle of the night I heard banging noises...woke up to see him with dead mouse by my bed!😨 I had SAME reaction as you..grossed out but told him good boy good hunter.🤣🤣
I just watched the video where the shelves at Walmart were. At the beginning of this mess I was doing some regular shopping at Meijer’s, similar to Walmart, and the place was nuts! Shelves going empty and grocery carts full. I don’t watch the news because it’s too depressing. One lady had the most panicked look on her face and I will never forget that. What a year we have had so far.
Went to Walmart today and got 14 chicken legs for 6.48 here in Alabama (that included tax) so that works out to .46 a piece. Thighs are my favorite but I grabbed those since my granddaughters are coming. I'll probably make some rice and a dollar bag of broccoli to feed them and me. So I'm sure it will be about $3 for the 3 of us. Thanks for your videos, they are so inspiring.
I agree. Reduced meat is always fine. I buy it all the time. It used to 50% off! That was a great deal! Not any more. Now they are 30% off. Not so good. But not too bad either. Meat is always better when one buys it on the cheap. Thank you PP!!!
Since I also live by myself, I divide food into meals and put in the fridge. It makes the food go further and keeps me from overeating. Thanks for sharing!
You are a very smart women. A lot of people in this world are lazy in body and mind. If they have to put forth a effort to make there life better they don't. There effects are complaining instead of doing. Your awesome.
I really enjoy these videos. We're really careful with our money and enjoy home-cooked meals. Moderation and creativity serve us well! Thank you for your no-nonsense videos.
My mom's chicken and rice casserole can't be beat. 2 cups water, 1cup rice, a few cuts of chicken topped with tomato soup and cream of chicken soup bake at 350 for 2 hours. Yum.
If you brine the chicken legs it will be moist and won't shrivel away from the bone when cooked. Takes half hr, there is a dry brine too. I learned that when I wanted to BBQ. They shrivel and looked unappetizing. If u brine them they turn out great.
Tip-If you like the wing sauce mix a little hot sauce with tomato catsup sugar salt and vinegar to your liking then fry your chicken no matter what pieces in a pan much like you did but coat the chicken in a little flour-then put some sauce in a ziplock bag throw chicken in and shake it-perfect buffalo chicken :) by the way I used a 2 eye camping stove (electric) for 3 years to cook on inside for 3 ppl lol works perfect. (I dont have a garden just a balcony on the 1st floor and grow stuff in buckets and containers) I suggest for ppl without garden space to buy in season cheap veg and dehydrate them-easy storage cuz its light weight and shrunken-that way you can prep a ton of food for later use and it stores super well and for a long time :) greetings from Germany
You tell em! I have a garden and a stocked pantry and still don't know how they do it sometimes. I cook most of my meals like this. Buy when there's a sale and as large a package as I can. I had poor man's meat loaf as a kid from eggs and bread crumbs, was my favorite.
I loved the way you tell your experience of food economy ! I do the same thing ! Plus , you don't have to cook everyday !! Time to do other important things around the house ! Great video as always ! 👍💪✌👏❤🔫
You made a really really good point. I am one of those people who feed 6 people on less than $100 a month because I grow a garden and glean and raise meat and whatnot and it's so true that not everyone can do that!!! It makes me crazy when people assume that just everyone can do those things. Thank you for saying that. And omg the surprise at the end! Lollll!
I guess all cultures have what are referred to as poor man's or struggle meals..but the funny thing is they are often remembered as some of the best meals because they were made with love and filled our bellies. Simply put..comfort food.

I love bubble & squeek, you have it on Monday night as its leftovers from Sunday dinner done in a frying pan
Good points.

I've missed your cooking videos!!
I always loved your cheap meals.

I love how you just cook around Rocky - don't want to disturb the sweet boy!!!❤
Team Rocky ❤

Rocky didn't get peanut butter, so he went and caught his own snackie. Good Boi👍
Been cooking like that for years. Raised my son that way. Was a single mom. Had to watch every penny, and then some.
These are still my favorites of all your videos!! Thanks for posting!!
..."aghhhh"...
"Take it outside!"
"Dont touch it!"
Lol!!
Thanks again and hugs to Rocky too.
So long as there's praise and pets to be had, Rocky will not budge.
Great job as always. Thank you

Gerald Turcotte I'm stealing the "used meat" term. Well done!

You always have good tips. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate it. We can all learn from each other.
It's not how much you make...It's how much you get to keep. Great job keeping the food price down PP!
Your dog is so awesome.
I love these videos. We are as poor as church mice out here.

I picked one up as well from Costco & was thinking about it today, "Hmm, what can I do with it." Terrific idea! Thank you!
I was at Costco one year in the winter. I bought a pork loin roast for a $1 a pound. I had to do the math twice😆
I'll be looking forward to the 12 volt appliance try out.
Looks great! Thanks again for the meal ideas.
No we don’t. Thank you 🙏 for acknowledging that

Correct. We do the same. Have BLTs, for dinner, with the breakfast/ brunch., leftover bacon. Bonus - only have to cook once that day.
CM Sag I’ve never seen “left over” bacon at my house. If you fix it, they will eat it . . . all of it.
So creative! I love it--just great fun figuring all of this out
LOL!
Rocky at the end... like he brought it in exactly for that reaction!
new subs here! thank you for the tips, as I am getting myself into being frugal . your videos helps a lot

Thank you for all your tips. We in Hawaii have higher prices due to most of our food is shipped to us. Thank you! Take care! Stay safe!🌴🌈🌺

Great video! Your co-star is the best

You want to get more poorer for dinners? Do cheese quesadillas, beans and rice, or butter on bread. 😭😂
All of those sound delicious right now. Lol.
The Eclectic Empath I agree and I didn’t even have lunch today. 😅
@@ambeegaming76 Not Great Value sliced cheese. 🧀😂
I have made videos on those too.
@LWCReaper Ketchup is also known as tomato soup in the rough here LOL :)
Oh man I was not expecting that at the end!! 🤣😱

I’m in California and you can get reduced meat at Safeway they call it “manager special” it’s there almost every time I go.
Annnd you can render fat from the skin and make broth, gravies, and sauces from boiling the bones. :D Thank you.
I love your cooking videos! Great food for cheap!
Good show, food friends and a little syfy... 🤓
