@karenmiernicki9981 That's terrible! I live in North Idaho, where winters are cold. Many people here use wood as a primary or secondary/supplemental heat source.

It was then I realized the real wealth was at home with my five children reading the Christmas story from the Bible. I feel rich when: 1) Wearing vintage clothes that I have found for a very cheap price or even for free - no famous brands, of course, and sometimes I have had to mend them first, but they look so stylish and feminine, they fit so well, and I can still wear them for decades! 2) Having my hot chocolate every morning, made of whole milk (that I get from the neighbouring farm for 60 [euro]cents per liter), cream and dark cocoa powder, no sugar, plus a bit of 85 % chocolate, the cheapest one. 3) Living in my childhood home, that is a hundred years old, and considered quite a big house for one person here in Finland (145 square meters) - it is REALLY cold inside in winter (+13 degrees centigrade is luxus, but mostly it is 9 to 11...). I am so proud of this house with all the family traditions and memories. It is a simple farmhouse, a log house, and in one room the log walls have not been covered. I feel SO rich, because today it is difficult to find such an old house that has not been spoiled by renovations, which is so often the case. My grandfather was very frugal and never modernized the kitchen, for example, and I still do not have running water.
@@YeshuaKingMessiah Yup grandma had to figure things out. I can't live without running water and electricity. We take it for granted but life would be so hard without those two utilities .
Mom always said you can be poor just not dirty poor. A bar of soap costs almost nothing. And what is wearing PJ's and house slippers to the store, you look sloppy and like you just climbed out of bed. You feel your best when you look your best.
Setting the table and making a delicious home cooked 3 course meal is a real luxury! A cup of tea/coffee in the morning outside. And having the house in order well before bedtime! My personal top 3😊
If you have scrap cloth use it to make appliques on old t-shirts to cover stains, make flowers for tops of old shoes (preferably flats), hair scrungies and clip covers, bracelet bands, and such, to match other pieces of clothing. Use orange and other citrus peels to make potpourri. Make holiday garlands and ornaments out of pine boughs and pinecones. Embroider napkins and handtowels made from rags/make matching kitchen sets of these. Can use old cooking oil (not fish) for candles Use kitchen scraps to start a plant. Can find how to sprout apple seeds and other fruit tree seeds and scraps on RUclips. It's a great feeling! Do some volunteer work~give time if you can't give money. Say a prayer of thanks
This is heavily related to self esteem...being able to be content in all circumstances so anything you do to nurture basic needs will make you feel rich. Promote quality relationships and take excellent care of yourself in simple ways. Take excellent care of your environment and what you do have treat it with great respect. Clean your home immaculately and take pride in the things you do have. Light a candle even if it's from the dollar store. Buy the best meals you can afford and be grateful for them no matter what. Love on people generously as though love is the greatest currency in the world bc it is. Simple things but so overlooked.
Great tips. My winter boots are 12 years old and I wear them everyday in the winter. I take excellent care of them and I found them in someone's garbage.

I bought an Italian espresso machine 5 years ago - it makes flat whites (here in Australia a flat white is $5-6). It has an inbuilt coffee grinder and milk frother - I can make a coffee as good as the cafes for 13 cents (plus milk maybe 13 cents too) I buy Coles own brand beans in 1 kg bag and they are excellent quality. Best purchase ever was that machine as Australians are the WORST coffee snobs
My grandma always said "it doesn't matter what you have, soap and water are cheap.". She was right. Keeping things clean makes it last longer and feel better.

I splurged 5 years ago on a pair of Gucci sneakers. Everytime I get home from wearing them, I always washed the shoe laces and wiped over the white parts with a warm soapy cloth. I've figured if I actually paid that much for something I'm going to look after it. They still look brand new.
My very fave way to spend money is on giving. last year I got a few extra Dollar Store trays. They're a perfect size for giving baked goods for the holidays, and it's so easy to do. The 6''x14''(?) trays were 2 for a buck at the time. I can get brownie mix for just a little more. I could never show up at someone's place for dinner n not bring something. Is it just me? Even some cute Dollar Tree dish towels with a ribbon on them show u care, or paper plates with matching napkins. U can put tgthr a nice gift for around $2.

Addition to the work clothes tip. I am a manager and decided to create my own uniform by only wearing black pants or skirts to work. I already had a few, but bought 2 new black pants from TJ Maxx for $24 and some black skinny jeggings from Walmart $12. I also praised a co-worker's company blazer in front of my supervisor and told him how much I LOVE wearing a unform... He then let me buy $260 of company branded polos, tops, cardigans and a blazer. I read all the fabric labels before purchasing to be sure I was getting high quality cotton, etc and nothing cheap looking or 100% polyester. Can't wait for them to arrive!!! I am all set for work clothes now between what I already own and what's coming from corporate. I'm transitioning from work from home (aka PJs all day😂) to back in the office and did NOT want to waste tons of money looking fancy for the job (required in my work). Uniform for the win!!! 🏆🏆🏆😊 BTW I love your content Prepper Princess - been watching off n on since 2018. Your skin looks great, you're glowing!
I get soap dispensers from Dollar Tree. Makes the bathrooms look fancy with my cheap hand soap. Changed to wool dryer balls off of Temu and for $6 I no longer buy dryer sheets. My son-in-law sells appliances at a high-end appliance store. He has visited production facilities and they all say you only need 1-2 tablespoons of laundry soap. Now a bottle of laundry soap (mid size, not the Costco size) will last us a year.
@@idahopreps4242 I started using tru earth laundry strips because I hate all the plastic those big jugs are made of. Plus they are heavy and I’m in a walk up. I sometimes tear the strip in half if I have less than a full load. They work great!!

Poor is usually a state of mind. I say usually. If my bills are paid and I am not starving, I do not consider myself poor. I am 60, no retirement. I know, I know, I should have planned better. Working on that now. I will likely need to work until I am dead but that’s okay. I have had times I had to go sit outside at 3am, in December, in Ohio, to get help from community action with the electric bill. They only took the first 10 that day. I have had to go to food banks. That was broke poor. Do what you can with what you’ve got! What resources do I have available to me today?
Hear, hear! I've been below the poverty line but I have never felt 'poor'. I've always had food on the table (even when it wasn't much or wasn't very nice), adequate clothing, a roof over my head and warmth during the winter (even if it's just in one room)
Washing your shoes and cleaning your car are 100%!! If you cannot afford new throw pillows, bedding, etc - I suggest rotating your existing things into other rooms. You can do this with art, rugs, throws, even furniture. It really freshens things up and makes you fall in love with your stuff all over again. My husband and I rearrange our house once every 18-24 months. I often trim flowers, branches and greenery from outside to make my own floral arrangements and I put them all over the house. You can use old jars for this too. It really freshens things up. And as always - go shopping in your own closets, cabinets and pantries at least once a year. You always find things to get give/trash/sell or new treasures to make room for. Pick one closet/cabinet/drawer a day if you have to. Also I always add water to my lotion and my daughters detangling spray and find I often like the product more when it is watered down. Your own pedicure is also very lux. Fill a big bowl and soak your feet while you watch tv, read, fold laundry or whatever. If you are like me and cant paint your nails worth a damn, use clear polish, it still looks and feels so lux!
I rinse out every bottle of product I have to get the last drop. lol. Save bread sacks. And I use wax paper. I ground my own hamburger by buying a roast on sale. Cheaper than ground beef.
The generic name for Vaseline is petroleum jelly, and it's often in the baby care section of the grocery store. After MOHS surgery for cancer, my dermatologist recommended vaseline for aftercare. And yes, thank Jesus for all His mercy, grace and beauty in the world!

We buy a bag of Arm & Hammer baking soda every 4 months. It's under $20 for 12 lbs. We use it as our Laundry soap, and add it to organic powdered tumeric to brush our teeth. Works great and tumeric off-sets stains. I love coffee.
Start organic gardening. Buy seeds for veggies that are expensive in the supermarket and you love. See about joining a local gardening group online or in person. Try to borrow tools or buy used equipment and pots/planters and maybe potting soil bags from thrift shops or garage sales. Ask others for advice. Also try to see if there is a local community garden with available plots. Learn to safely process your harvest for long-term food use. Try hard to save cash and not get into high expenses in this useful hobby.

Dental health is largely dependant upon family genes. It’s the type of saliva your body produces that is either helpful or harmful to your teeth. My mother lost all her teeth when carrying me as calcium is leached from mother’s body to support baby’s development. Brushing teeth is important and flossing too but sometimes your genes will override all your hard work. Don’t feel bad. It’s not your fault.
Your mother's intake of calcium from her diet was not sufficient to support her and the baby. Her teeth would have been fine if she had sufficient calcium in her diet. When people can't afford decent food all manner of health issues begin to surface. There is a genetic component too as some people absorb calcium better than others. Generally speaking, health can be promoted by having a nutritious diet.
Amen, Nita, you are SO right. I flossed like a maniac. All I ever got was flack from the hygienists about not "doing it right," and I certainly WAS doing it right. The dental industry is now all about how much $$$ they can get from you and your insurance over time. The hygienists check for pockets and push "deep" cleanings and scaling for periodontal disease. Some honest dentists now believe that flossing can actually increase bacteria if and when you cut into your gums with the flossing material, lol. It's actually about the pH level in your mouth and keeping things less acidic by using some xylitol after meals. I'm 70 and for two years have been doing a program put out by Ellie Phillips, DDS, who has a channel here on you tube and a website, and it's done wonders for me. She is very big on using some specific over-the-counter mouth rinses you can get through Walmart, (CloSys, Listerine and ACT fluoride rinse) plus Regular Crest Cavity Protection toothpaste and using some xylitol after meals. Very interesting lady. She did studies on pregnant women years ago. She has put out a couple books, one of which I found at my public library. About the genes, my grandmother and dad both needed to have their teeth pulled before they turned 30. My grandmother lived to age 97, ate very well and never complained about her dentures, lol. I miss my honest old school dentist for sure.
@ I’m glad you know the truth now and shame on those mean dentists. I had a real jerk of a dentist once as a teenager and the experience left me feeling really awful so I can relate to how you must have felt. Happy you have found healthy solutions and yes PH is important. I’m going to get some strips today and test my levels. Reading your answer was the perfect reminder as I’m off to the pharmacy now 👍thx
True. My mother has terrible teeth, although she has always been fastidious in her oral hygiene. My father, my son and I all have great teeth and we don't have to worry too much. The only thing that ever caused me an issue was fizzy drinks, so I stopped drinking them
Thumbs up for the dog walk, for me feeling rich is paying off the bills as they come due and still having enough to buy food and gas. Property taxes showed up in the mail, most of it goes to the schools.
I prevented many of my students from biting their nails when I told them that their habit eventually ruins their teeth and that eventually they would be spending thousands of dollars at the dentist.
Same. Buy non gmo seeds. I bought 30$ 10 bags of sheep /cow manure, neem oil. Got a great harvest. I hand dig a new garden bed every year until I have no lawn left to mow. I have 1/2 adre lot in town. It's so rewarding 🙌
Thank you so much, sis, for helping us save money! Thanks to you, i fill my laundry detergent , handsoap, mouthwash and dish soap with water when theyre half empty.
I satisfy that urge to have ‘new’ toiletries and makeup etc by switching up the products I use each month. So the partially used stuff just gets stored till I choose from my own cupboards next month. Everything lasts ages, so I’m more likely to actually use it up this way (without feeling deprived).
Dollar tree Christmas gift peppermint candies, Werthers caramels, Hershey kisses etc. Put in a clear party bag. Ribbon or bow. Or coffee mug with candy cane and packet of hot cocoa mix. They also sell stretchy gloves. It’s the thought not the price.
If you suffer from allergies and get red, itchy eyes, wash your eyelids and brows with baby wash. It doesn't burn your eyes and gets rid of all the pollen, dust and irritants. Generic or off brands from the dollar store work fine and a bottle lasts forever.
Re: Baby oil and vaseline. I used baby oil after my showers for several decades, and then began getting skin cancers that needed removal. When I switched to using natural oils/fats on my skin, especially my face, the cancers never returned. Petroleum-based products are not healthy over the long term in my experience, but there are excellent--and cheap--alternatives available. No need for fancy concoctions!

Yes, Vaseline is really amazing, it really helps with a lot of skin issues. Great for baby bums too to prevent diaper rash. It cured many skin issues for me and my kids. I use it everyday now.
For shaving, I have my favourite big coffee mug (it chipped a little so I wanted to give it a new job). I pop soap ends into the mug, add a little hot water. After it soaks, I use a men’s shaving brush to swish around in the mug until the foam is thick. Works like a dream and feels luxe to me.
I haven't been to Starbucks for a few years so I "treated" myself with a small peppermint mocha. Oh my word, they are so gross now. Six dollars and five cents for something that tasted like Nesquik powder.
Dollar tree sells cans that are soda sized, but a little smaller, of ready made flavored coffee. They have vanilla, caramel, mocha, and if you're lucky that day, peppermint mocha, for 1.25. So delicious. You can always pour it into a mug and heat up in a microwave.
I do free car washes with a dedicated old towel. Get it wet and wipe away. A free car wash any time you want. Rinse the towel and wash separately when done with other cleaning rags. You can use it a few times before washing, just dry it out outside in between uses.

'Just because you're poor doesn't mean you have to look the part.' So true. My mother always told me that coming from a poor family herself, other people wouldnt believe her because her mother always kept her clean and well dressed even though she only had one dress to wear to school and it was sewn by her mother. She was always told that she didn't qualify to have a school meal from the canteen because she was wealthy, and she wasn't but she was always clean and hygienic, so others assumed she was well off.
I never understood the stereotype of poor people are always dirty and smelly. I came from a well-to-do area, and some of my contemporaries had the WORST hygiene!
@@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living I've encountered people like that too. I used to work for a couple that were successful and quite wealthy, yet they had some poor hygiene and rarely washed their clothing even though they could afford to and should have done so regularly. I'm not wealthy or 'poor' but I've had people assume that I'm well off because of my outward appearance. It's not that I'm trying to give the impression of being wealthy, but just keeping clean and not going around looking like a slob. Being poor doesn't mean that you have to look like you are. My parents came from poor families, and they often times didn't even have shoes or even food as children, but they were always clean.

Being debt free is the only way to live 🎉. It’s worth it to follow a budget 😊

It’s not your fault.
the calcium was 'leached' away

I satisfy that urge to have ‘new’ toiletries and makeup etc by switching up the products I use each month. So the partially used stuff just gets stored till I choose from my own cupboards next month. Everything lasts ages, so I’m more likely to actually use it up this way (without feeling deprived).

Re: Baby oil and vaseline. I used baby oil after my showers for several decades, and then began getting skin cancers that needed removal.
