Great video! It was hard to find a video that shows how to clean wood stoves with the ceiling close but you did it! Thank you! About cleaning the glass: we use wet newspaper with the ashes left after a fire and it works wonderfully and saves on chemicals!

That expandable pipe is awesome... anything to stay off the roof! Nice!

Great video. I can't get on the roof anymore. Can you tell me where you purchased the expandable
pipe and how long it is. Do you know how far the stove should be from the wall? Any help would
be appreciated. We are in this snow storm across the south west. And I will never be caught
off guard again. As soon as the roads get better I'm driving 75 miles to the nearest city
and getting a wood stove. Thank you.

OMG, I have been using a wood stove for over 50 years and never knew about the expandable stove pipe, I must find one! Thank you so much, we can go on our roof to clean it out, but your idea is great. Thank you.

You have to dismantle the flue? Why not just take out some fire brick and run the brush up from inside the stove? This is how I do it. Haven't been going on the roof in a few years.
I recently purchased some kind of a flue cleaning kit that attaches to a drill. It spins and cleans the flue. Fantastic job

I did this today. Great idea with the garbage bag. Is there any danger of popping off the stovepipe cap up top? Unfortunately I put it back together and it was MUCH cleaner but when I lit a fire, smoke was seeping out through one stovepipe connection and up top at the slip connector ☹️ I was so excited for my first smoke free fire this year

Well, after coming to grips with all that it means to turn 77 years on the odometer, I decided to find alternatives to climbing ladders. This worked great with very little cleanup. Thanks for the video.

Thank's for sharing that with us, one question though, do you use a metal or a plastic brush for your stainless steel chimney?

It is a very hard fiberglass bristle on the brush! Thanks for watching!

I have a telescoping joint above my stove, but I don't take it off (too much work!) I just slide the lower section up inside the upper section, screw the brush on to the first section of rod and slide it into the pipe. I then poke a hole in one corner of a kitchen-trash sized bag and stick the rod through that, fit the bag around the stove pipe, secure it with masking tape (against the bag, not the pipe, to avoid getting glue residue on the pipe). I arrange the bag so that the intact corner is lower than the corner with the rod hole, so that the debris collects in that.
I add the rods one at a time and slide the brush up with each addition. It's a bit of a tight fit getting the brush through the telescoping section, but not bad. I work my way up through the second story and the cold attic, stopping when it hits the Chinaman's cap. When I bring it down, I slide the rods out on the floor of an adjacent room, but I could also take each rod off as it comes down if I didn't have the space for all that rod in one piece.
Hint: every so often, lubricate the threads on the rods with petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Also, the fiberglass rods are more flexible than copper, and you need that flexibility to bring the rods in angled off to the side.

Great video! We have the same basic set up and I was just trying to figure out how to clean the chimney for the first time. The idea of getting to the top of the chimney on a 12/12 roof wasn't sitting well with me. Definitely going to give this technique a try. Thank you for posting!

Curious, how do you clean the cap.. if it was needed? Would dismantling the outside stove pipe and brace be needed, to lower the top section down? My roof is a 12 pitch.

I have a question about the boards on your walls. Did you use dried boards just butted up against the next board or did you cut each side to allow for the drying, so you don't have gaps?

    • @homesteadhandyman4481
      @homesteadhandyman4481  6 лет назад

Judy H the boards are tongue + groove. We stained them before we installed them because as they contract and expand we did not want to Have a gap in the stain. Hope that helps!

I dont think this is gonna work with a chimney that doesnt go straight through the roof. Mine is curved and goes out the wall, and then straight up.
