One man’s trash is a bear family’s treasure, as one Alaska neighborhood found out when a bear-proof garbage container was successfully cracked open on August 9.
Footage filmed by Patricia Abston Cox shows the bear holding up cars as it relentlessly tries to open the trash can on a Kodiak street, while three cubs watch from the sidelines.
The animal eventually manages to get the container open, and quickly swipes a bag full of trash before making its getaway with the baby bears in tow.
“Persistence pays off,” Cox told Storyful.

A few of the comments have it right that you need to honk or yell at bears when you see them doing this. Despite being very powerful, they are skittish, and they will run away - IF they are conditioned to do so at an early age. However, if bears get too comfortable being around humans, they will be killed. I've done landscaping/construction in the Rocky Mountains, so I've been around bears quite a bit, and I've seen it both ways: brave bears die, whereas scared bears survive.
so this bear has learned a lesson that could be it's end one day.. but i guess those car drivers were too worried about getting their car scratched, if a driver was there in a old truck he could have driven rushed up at the bear scare it off maybe..

I had a family of mice in my apartment and with each generation the babies became more and more trusting until the last baby died outside the nest on the second day because it was simply hardly afraid of people. She climbed on top of me and gently nibbled on my earlobe, she was so sweet and trusted me with her life, I will never forget that. It made me sad that it's trust was abused.

This bear is the neighbourhood first aider; giving a live demonstration on performing CPR! Wouldn’t have had to use the bin had there have been some human volunteers.

I like how the bear is so unconcerned about holding up traffic. Also, whenever I see something like this I can’t avoid the thought that it looks like a big man in a bear suit. Crazy, I am aware of that, but I can’t help it. Don’t worry, I know what is real and what isn’t.

People need to learn that you don’t sit and watch a bear do that. Go watch the bears in their habitat, not on residential streets. Make them know they are unwelcome and we are not pleasant to be around.
What did you want these particular individuals to do here? Drive up on a mama with her cubs near, or drive backwards?

Smarter than the average bear
So sad. We just keep cutting down trees taking their food source to wipe our butt with. Hope nothing was dangerous in that bag that the bears can eat. I wish someone came closer and scared it off before getting into the garbage can. Lord watch over our animals in the wild and protect them and please help them to find the food they need because one day they want have any.

They don't typically have a "hard" time finding food. The REAL problem is, people don't appropriately contain and/or dispose of their garbage. Makes the bears lazy, and it's dangerous for them and people.

Yep. They put down bears here all the time. People can't keep them out of the trash! I HD straps an steel cable trying to secure mine and they still got I it. All 3 put down.
