The modern world of opera has lost its way. The composers were painting musical pictures of specific times and places with their music, as directed by the libretto. The curtain goes up, and the magic and art of the composer takes us to this other world through their music. There is now an entire generation that is deprived of authentic opera.

Simply not true there are plenty of traditional as people call them productions there are also some incredible interpretations of the classics that are quite brilliant, opera is theatre as well as music, try and look outside the blinkers.

@@brendanquinn9354 I USED to have an open mind for occasional experiments in opera staging. But no longer, as it is now rare for any opera to be presented as the librettist and composer intended (usually older productions that are revived). It is even more rare for a new production to be staged in adherence to the libretto. THIS practice has defined opera for HUNDREDS of years. NOW the opportunity to see an opera in a major house as the creators of the opera itself intended is very rare. Traditions are deliberately being snuffed out. It is not my opinion but fact. VERY sad. Opera has ALWAYS been largely period pieces set in a designated time and place. The ART of opera in large part, is to experience this magic as the composer depicts not only the drama (which ALSO gets changed) but the setting as well.

Thank you for saying out loud what many opera lovers are thinking!
One of my opera-addicted friends stopped going to the opera altogether, preferring to listen to his huge collection of fine opera recordings, concentrating on the music and making up the staging in his mind‘s eye… Not the worst idea, but what a sad decision for a person who loves opera so much…

@@hrbooksmusic7878thank you for your message. Many of us feel this way. I rarely find anything in the opera house interesting or appealing anymore. It is tragic that what many consider the greatest art form ever conceived in the history of mankind, is being replaced by narcissistic nonsense. The more we speak out, the better. Thanks again!

Thanks are all mine! I hope that many more listeners/readers will happen upon your interesting and insightful comments, because these will show them that they are not alone with their views and concerns. Some of them won‘t speak up anymore because they are sick and tired of being called old-fashioned and lagged behind in time, of being told that they need to „open up“ to the modern spirit which has captured the opera. You give them a voice - and a good one, loud and clear.
      Please carry on!
      All the best! 🍀🍀🍀

I think there is a balance, opera is also theatre, don't knock it just because it is not traditional as you see it! - Mind you the Otello two years ago was pretty awful!
