The main difference between stereo and Atmos is the extra audio real estate involved. There are more speakers available as a destination for program material. There isn't really any difference in the type of panner used in either format it's more about the nuances of where the audio can be placed in the expanded audio landscape available in Atmos.
@@thedweezilzappa Hi Dweezil, thanks for replying. I'm familiar with Atmos, but honestly, using the panner available in Logic with stereo monitoring, I got the impression of a new three-dimensional spatial positioning even in a stereo mix. I'll keep researching. Congratulations on the studio, best regards!
I hung out with dweezil in this studio shortly after namm one year. And I can say This is the MAN for ATMOS haven´t heard anyone be a creative with it.
Dweezil... you need to do shows at the Sphere!!! The way Phish had various instruments, delay repeats, modulation, drum fill, etc swirling around the room with complete separation was insane. A true 3D sound scape. You would take that to another level!
I honestly would have thought that the biggest obstacle to building this studio would be MONEY. I have never gotten the impression that the Zappa Plays Zappa tours are all that lucrative. I even seem to recall recently that when Dweezil went on this latest tour that he had to auction off some of his guitars just to finance it. And the songs he's playing are entirely his dad's, so I'm guessing a certain percentage has to go to the Zappa Estate, which Ahmet and Diva control. But however Dweezil managed to finance his studio, it's gorgeous! It's a marvel to look at! I suspect Frank would be mightily impressed. 👍😃
Wow, impressive studio! Loved the glimpse of the live rendition of "Inca Roads" at the end. Sounds like Dweezil is getting increasingly creative with the material. Great stuff!
What a pity you don't bring the coming tour to The Netherlands Dweezil.. Hopefully you bring out another bluray of the tour so we can enjoy the show here too!

Dweezil you think Atmos is here to stay in terms of replacing stereo completely on all future productions, i.e music created from the ground up for Atmos specifically ? Or do you foresee stereo sticking around indefinitely ?
I believe we will always have stereo. Atmos and other multi-channel formats will be a nice alternative to stereo. When done right Atmos and multi-channel can enhance details and put the listener in a unique perspective to enjoy nuances that were masked in stereo.
@@thedweezilzappa Thank you for getting back to me. :) I feel the exact same way, its going to be interesting as time goes on to see what comes out. I can only image what you're dad would have done with it lol Like a civilization phase 3 created for atmos. lol You can tell Peefeeyatko blew my mind hearing his concepts on things. :)
Does this mean Atmos of the entire Zappa catalogue?? Of course be careful what I wish for because some engineers have no clue what they are doing. I have true faith in you Dweezil
@@thedweezilzappa No kidding! Thanks for replying Dweezil, I had the pleasure of seeing you live in Buffalo almost 10 years ago now. You’re the best 🤘❤
I'm trying to study the resonance of solid body electric guitars. Could you please suggest what equipment I would need to measure resonance well from the body itself? Thank you for all of your hard work and wisdom.
i bet this sounds great. Nice studio! I just have to wonder though, how many people actually have an atmos setup in their homes? Can't be very many so it makes me wonder if all this is really worth it.
That's a good question. There are a few ways people can experience Atmos. The majority of people right now will hear the binaural version of Atmos via headphones on streaming services. When Atmos mixes are done well the binaural headphone experience can be quite good at revealing special nuanced details in the music. Some listeners will notice details more in front of them as well as behind them. Atmos is best when heard on speakers and the good news is that many new cars will be equipped with Atmos speaker systems. This will make it possible for many more people to enjoy what Atmos has to offer. I see Atmos as a great way to hear alternative versions of your favorite songs, when done well.
This is the kind of content I am interested in. It is a beautiful studio. I like the backgammon / dart board pattern a lot. I will see you in Houston, TX in January. Also, which ticket vendor do you recommend?

Hey Dweezil...I've a question for you...What other projects are you involved in aside from ZPZ? Automatic and Confessions are some of my favorite albums ever!!! When do we get another solo album? Have you ever thought of a collaboration with WVH?
It would be fun to collaborate with Wolfgang at some point! I am thinking about making another solo album but I'm also trying to wrap up production on "What The Hell Was I Thinking?" I started that project back in the early 90's.
@thedweezilzappa That would be legendary! Thanks for the reply it totally made my day. I'm a huge fan of your music. I love the ZPZ stuff, too. I haven't caught the live show yet. Are there any Seattle dates lined up? Music is the best!
Hey Dweezil! Can't tell if those are the amplified ones, but i own the passive version of your speakers - ATC SCM20PSL Pro mk2's (I have a Bryston power block which I plan to bury myself with and will never go powered) and i cannot BELIEVE you found a mount that you are comfy standing underneath considering their weight. Holy cr@pballs...The passives are spec'd @ 45 lbs each but feel more like 1,000 when i have to pick them up. I get nervous just having them on stands! That recent earthquake we had had one of them shaking, almost fell over i can't imagine what you went through. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Curious what sub you paired with them. My studio is small 12 x 12 so i opted for a SVS SB-2000 through a dbX active xover which worked out real well. FWIW - I work with Danny Carey and among other things he owns your pop's old AKG BX-20 spring reverb and one of his Marshalls. You could not hope for a better adoption. DC has the ultimate respect for equipment as is, but it's nothing compared to what he holds for Frank.
It's great embrasing the future but I don't know a single person with an Atmos setup, I think when hitting the point of struggling to mount speakers in a professional studio I would have wondered if this was all a bit pointless. I've no doubt it sounds amazing there but with the need for so much precsion of speaker placement, angle etc I have to ask if it was worth it for the six people in the world who can listen to anything you produce as it was recorded.
Atmos as a platform has been integrated into many different devices from phones and laptops to the next generation of cars. Way more than previous multi-channel format. Opportunities for consumers to hear Atmos in their own environments keep increasing. Using Atmos as a creative format in music creation and production is increasing with technology as well. I enjoy the format for all of those reasons and will continue to explore the creative side.
That's a Starbird boom. Those are used on many famous scoring stages and other large studios. You can fly a Decca Tree with one, but they didn't sell in large enough numbers to keep a company afloat, so Triad-Orbit took over the product line and now offer it alongside their own designs. I love Triad-Orbit stands (except for the price), but they do have weight limits. A Starbird boom will hold up anything, but it's really too much stand for many smaller studios. Latch Lake booms nicely fill the gap between Triad-Orbit and Starbird.
Great! But most people have neither the money nor the room to experience those atmos mixes. I am lucky that I was able to afford a decent pair of nearfield monitors. And I hate to wear Headphones a long time.
Many new cars will be equipped with Atmos systems. It will be the first time a well calibrated consumer speaker environment will be easily accessible. That opens the door to much more musical experimentation across a wide range of styles.
@ oh thanks , I didn't know that. Unfortunately I have no car and never had a drivers license for my 60 years. I took my whole money into my little studio stuff and instruments. I never experienced immersive mixes until my father's quadrophonic hifi setup in the 70s. And I hardly know a pleasing stereo remix of older recordings that I love. But I have faith in AI... 🤓 I also can understand your enthusiasm on your studio stuff. If I would have the money I would do the same.
I wanted to enjoy this; I was interested in the subject, but word of advice for your film crew: when the talent is doing a piece to camera the whole point is that it makes each individual viewer think that they are talking directly to them. As soon as you use the ridiculous side shot that changes for the viewer to "man in a studio talking to a camera." Imagine being at a conference presentation and the speaker keeps talking directly to one person in the front row; you are going to lose interest very quickly watching that.
It's a pretty widely accepted format at this point and pretty well integrated with most technology including streaming platforms. It should be noted that currently, most people will be experiencing it within a headphone or soundbar format with the exception of the advent of Atmos car systems which are on the rise. At the point where most cars have Atmos, the discreet speaker playback will be available to a much larger audience.
This stuff is such a gimmick. Good luck ever getting the home user to ever care about having a 14 speaker setup at home and pocket their ADHD enough to actually sit in the SINGLE position in the room that gives the "ATMOS EFFECT". So lame.
To each his own. It's a very creative format that brings out amazing details in the music (when done right) and nearly every new car will be equipped with an Atmos speaker system. So in that sense many people will have direct access to Atmos.
Would like to know if people have been using Atmos panners to position instruments in a stereo mix.

On tour we use the WAVES LV 1 system.
Doesn't the HOLOPLOT tech used in the Las Vegas Sphere allow for beamforming and positioning of sound in the mix? Maybe could also be used for ATMOS?
The beamforming technology is crazy! Military grade... Beyond speakers and ATMOS.
As a listerner I am into build a Atmos system both for Audio (me) and Cinema (MiLady).
Dweezil needs one or two more compressors.
I do a lot of experiments with serial compression. Layers of different compressor types working together in series and parallel.
