I remember this game. My family and I, as some of the few Ball State fans present were very happy with the way we played. The loss of Brady Hoke affected our team very hard.
@WolverineHistorian You're right -- I was thinking last home game of the season prior to OSU. In any event, we had a much easier time mailing it in the next weekend vs. Indiana.
It must have been a letdown that they couldn't get that last touchdown in the end. But at least the Michigan defense FINALLY decided to show up in the 2nd half. Geeze. Hoke in a fleece and wearing a headset? Weird. Maybe that's when he started the short sleeve only thing.
Lol the description says "Ball State had no business being as close as they were." But remember, this is the same Ball State team that was ranked 12th in the nation just two years later.
@MrDunedon I was at that one as well. My toes were frozen even with 2 layers of socks but I stayed to the very end. The Ball State game was much better weather wise. It got warmer as the afternoon went on. I took my coat off in the second quarter.
I listened to this game at the Franklin Cider Mill and my wife was so annoyed. I was practically chewing my fingers while listening to the last Ball State drive inside the Michigan 5 yard line. It was a big let down for Michigan, but I'm sure Dave Letterman was enjoying the game!
The classic let-down game, the one right before the big one in Columbus, #1 vs. #2. I think it's safe to say that we may have overlooked this opponent just a tad.
@actuaryawf I was sitting in the end zone, second row, of that Ball State drive. It was pretty tense. My dad called me on my cell phone in a panic asking me what the hell was going on. But by then, the crowd was so loud I couldn't hear him anymore so I didn't know if he could understand what I was saying. At the time, I referred to this game as a "Let's never speak of this game again," win. But then I went to the horror the following season so this is much better in comparison.
Henne's pick six toward the end of the first quarter was horrible. Not sure what he was even looking at. Not surprised Ball State gave us a game considering Hoke was in charge.
Jackson's big run totally went to the 6-inch line, not the 1-yard line. Harbinger of last year's Toussaint screw job. Should we as Michigan fans EVER expect to actually get a call like that?
The announcer mentions the NW game the week before this...yeah, I was there. Not pleasant, to say the very least. Still, it beat the NW game in 2008. Similar weather conditions, but we won the 2006 game. Not so much the 2008 one.
Wasn't this one of the closest games Michigan had that year before the Ohio State showdown? It was also the first time Michigan football was on ESPN-U when a lot of cable channels did not carry it.
@WolverineHistorian It's debatable which day had the worst weather: NW 2006 or NW 2008. Both were miserable to sit through. But like I said...at least we won in 2006. :-)
@willisnomiko Eh, not really. The only thing that swung our way was the overtime catch, and that wouldn't have happened if they had called the rest of it properly. The hands to the face on Kovacs when they converted 4th and 11 was the worst.
@commodorefan2 Last year's Ohio game was a little more fluky. For their part, Ohio's game plan was conceptually insane, but not bad...attempt to light up the sky after running the hell out of the ball all season. Plus they were fully reloaded by the Michigan game. And let's not forget the Toussaint touchdown fiasco. It would be nice to leave a Michigan game without hating the refs for once.
This game sucks for many reasons... obviously we played horrible but it also gave OSU the blueprint to shred us with the spread... which is something USC also took advantage of in the 2nd half of the Rose Bowl.
I miss the Nike Michigan uniforms!

Mike Fucking Hart
favorite football player of all time
I don't care what anyone says, if Brady Hoke was wearing a fleece, it was f'ing cold!!
@greasyindiekid I know and I agree. The only reason I uploaded it was because of the Brady Hoke angle. Otherwise, I would have left it alone.

Those were two very different teams. This Ball State squad went 5-7.

Wouldn't mind hiring that Ball State coach once Lloyd retires, anyone with me?
I was at this game and it was ugly but I watched this video for this man 20:54

This game was so hard to watch
Man, the atmosphere was stale at that game. It's weird how much it's changed in 5 years

nate davis was a good qb
I go to Ball State haha
@TheZooCrew We could thank the refs for the Sugar Bowl. Just saying.
