My apologies the irons in test are 225 and 245, same irons from different generations, if the 241 iron was being tested you would see a far higher launch angle due to the weaker lofts, as you can see from the data launch angle is very similar with both iron sets in test.
Two years ago I started using Jumbo grips on my Driver and woods, it honestly was a difficult switch at first but after a couple of weeks I was hooked. This year I developed arthritis in my hands, it was so painful I thought my golf days were behind me. As a last resort I tried using Jumbo wrap on all my irons and wedges as well as the woods that already had jumbos. At first the problem of pain was greatly reduced and I could play again. Then my game got better, accuracy was much better and my distance with irons was better by 7-10 yards. Dispersion has greatly improved. I’m an advocate for Jumbo grips especially for seniors. My handicap before this was 16 after this season with jumbos on all clubs my handicap is now 13. I’m 78 years old a senior and play four times a week.
Jumbo grips come in 6 sizes: standard; xs; sm; med; large; xl. To validate his test ...you would have hit the same clubs with each 6 sizes vs your standard grip.
I am a senior golfer with arthritis apparent in both hands. I now play with just 7 clubs but rotate from a pool of 10 depending upon time of year, weather conditions and course being played. I have put jumbo grips on all of my clubs and am finding that my grip is so much more secure, I miss less shots and it builds confidence. A definite yes for jumbo grips for the elderly
What I have found was going up to the jumbomax midsize from a standard midsize actually felt natural and comfortable. But after having the jumbomax on all my clubs for an entire season then (especially picking up my playing partners standard grips) OMG not only alien but feels like a toothpick. Don’t know how I EVER played standard sized grips?
I'm a 77 year old man. I switched to jumbo grips a couple of years ago because I have arthritis in my hands. I may have lost distance but hard to tell if it was the grips or the aging process. But my hands feel much better with them. Thanks for the video. Brian Mc from yonkers ny on 12-1-24
Jumbomax grips are an absolute game changer for me. After watching this video I put two standard oversized on two clubs to try the difference. After a bucket on the range, it was confirmed 'JumboMax' are the grips for me. More distance, more control, much straighter, more comfort.
Made the switch to jumbo grips a few months ago. Made big gains in consistency, dispersion and scoring. I have always gripped the club too much in the palm and too active with my hands. Definitely would recommend everything about them other than the cost which is expensive
Not at all a useless and pointless test, but an extremely significant one. The loss of carry and landing angle was critical. Your test underscores the importance of getting fitted by a professional fitter to hone in on exactly what kind of swing you have and what works best for your swing, not for another player or YT tester, including various grips. Don’t forget that grips weigh a lot and going to a larger grip will change the swing weight and total weight of the club. A larger grip can feel more comfortable in the hands, so one option may be to stay with the standard size end but one that has less of a taper where your trail hand goes. In other words, what you have clearly and usefully demonstrated is that grip fitting really should be just as important an element of a professional fitting as head type and shaft weight, flex and bend profile. Good job.
Very interesting results. I switched from standard size to Jumbo (not jumbo max grips) and it transformed my game. Like you I'm prone to be "wristy" with the left unexpected shot a problem and to be honest it gets in your head, With the larger grips it has taken the left side out and has given me confidence with the result I have gained distance plus accuracy. You are correct saying it's a case of all or nothing, yes try on one club and try it but only take that out to play the course, and your putter LOL. 🤜🤛
Appreciate your course experience and simulator data. My experience with Jumbo Max grips has been different. Did you use the Jumbo Max fitting process on their web site? What are the swing weights of clubs with Jumbo Max and regular grips? Same or different? How about total weight of each club? My hands are larger than average so oversize and oversize less taper grips have been on my clubs for years. Still, had to clamp down to get a secure grip. Unfortunately, finding the right Jumbo Max grip is not simple. After trying several Jumbo Max styles, chose the STR8 style. Those also eliminated adding counterweight to fine tune swing weight. No question the feel is initially strange. However, after 6 rounds will never go back. 1. Less force required to securely grip the club allows more fluid swing and the feel of less effort. 2. No hand pain or discomfort after a round. 3. Iron dispersion much less, but can still draw or fade the ball. 4. Irons carry longer. As I get more play with the Jumbo Max grips, trending toward around 10 yards per club. 5. Driver and 3 wood dispersion reduced. Please clarify your statement about using 241 and 245 model irons. Factory specs are different. Were they adjusted to have identical lofts?
While I love watching your work, I believe this test is flawed. I did an fitting for the Jumo grips to insure I got the correct size for my game and swing. My fitter was very patient in switching out the grips during the fitting. Once I found the right grip, I have found my carry has increased and I got a higher ball flight. It has also helped my athirst in my hands. So now when I get fitted for new clubs I have extra grips we use to do the club fitting.
@@TheAverageGolfer I did not see where you did any kind of fitting for the Jumbo Max grips. ( I did when I made the change to find the right grips). Jumbo Max grips will change the balance of a club. Not only do CB grips like Tour Series and Comfort Wrap add to the overall stability of your clubs... they help golfers release the club with less effort since heavier grips are easy to stop or "snap" at impact. During my fitting and testing for my new irons we saw a change in the balance of the irons with a much higher ball flight and better distance. We looked a several other shafts and found the same effect. So I was assuming that the grips were just selected without a proper fitting, and that no work done on the difference in balance of the clubs discussed or that you were able to see the counter balance effect.
When golfers switch to CB grips, we typically see them hit higher shots and turn their blocks into draws.
I went to jumbo on my driver and woods and really enjoyed it for a while, then dropped my woods to golf pride jumbo grips and loved it. Now have golf pride jumbos on everything except my driver which still has the jumbo max xl
I switched most of my clubs to midsize and didn't notice a distance loss but it sure helped with my left pull. My fairways and hybrids have standard size as they aren't as much of an issue as the driver and irons. I also use standard on my wedges. If the lofts were that much different as posted below, that would make a huge difference.
At the start of the video you said that the Jumbo grips were on a set of 241s and regular grips on a set of 245s. The lofts are very different as are the launch characteristics. 245 lofts: 5i 24 degrees, 7i 30 degrees and 9i 38 degrees 241 lofts: 5i 27 degrees, 7i 34 degrees and 9i 42 degrees Basically 3-4 degrees difference between clubs which should result in roughly a club difference (say 10-12 yards) in carry distance. The test is really comparing apples and pears. You would need to have 2 identical sets of clubs to properly compare. After saying that, the idea of the video is very good, I just do not think the test is fair and could lead to the wrong conclusions
Completely agree with you here. You're also comparing blades with hollow body. Mis hit the blade and you are going lose a few more yards than the hollow body. Need to compare like for like clubs and shafts with just a grip change. Swing weight is going to be different to, which can affect club speed and delivery. Only proved that dispersion is not any better really.
My apologies the irons in test are 225 and 245, same irons from different generations, if the 241 iron was being tested you would see a far higher launch angle due to the weaker lofts as you rightly point out, as you can see from the data launch angle is very similar with both iron sets in test.
I changed to Jumbomax 3 months ago due to pain in my wrist and an arthritic thumb. No more wrist and thumb ache after 18 holes now. Much less pressure on the grip.
Love the jumbomax L I use on my woods. Once I finally settle on a set of irons (played three sets this past season. Wilson tour cb '21, p790, and Callaway rouge x irons) I'm putting the same size grips on them. Distance doesn't concern me as much as the accuracy. If I'm getting less yardage from the fat grips that is fine as long as it's a consistent distance.
Hi Andy, due to arthritis I changed my entire set to Jumbomax mid and small grips in the ultra light version and have seen massive benefits and vast improvements in my game. My distance and dispersion also improved radically on every club as well. As someone else wrote, when I try and test new clubs the standard grips feel like toothpicks!! Hahaha!! Love my Jumbomax grips! Hey, if they work for Bryson they can work for me!
Tried Jumbomax on a number of clubs - my main conclusion is to try different sizes to find the right one for you. I found it easier to use larger ones on the driver and wood than irons.
Same - I experimented with them for a season. LOVED them on my woods. For whatever reason, I really struggled with them on my short irons. Tried using standard on irons and keeping the jumbo on my woods but it was just too weird. Now using MCC +4 on everything.
I have just switched to jumbo max grips. I have been suffering from a massive snap hook and wanted to see if they help with little to no expectations. Further to that I have always felt uncomfortable holding clubs with regular/mid size grips like I couldn’t control it. I tested one on my driver and 6i and the initial help to my hook has been significant. Interesting contrary to your results I have gained distance and max hight most significantly on my driver but across the board as well. I’m unsure as to why, it could be because I’m more comfortable with the bigger grips or after contacting jumbomax they have suggested it could be because the lighter relative head weight has improved my tempo slowing me down at the top of my swing I think effectively improving lag. This may be true as I feel like I’m putting in no effort and hitting further. Whatever the long term outcome of performance is I think I will be sticking with them for no other reason then for the first time I feel comfortable holding a golf club.
It's obvious that the jumbo grips are not for you. You made a comment saying you might have trouble releasing the club and it really showed up in club head speed. I always find it interesting that we all react differently to changes in swing weight, shaft weight, flex and in this case grip size. Fitting definitely matters.
Seeing comments below, I was wondering about loft differences also. The results are therefore inconclusive to me. I am considering jumbo grips but have not made a switch yet. Can you redo this test to get an apples to apples comparison?
Wouldn’t you need to change the shaft weigh? I assume this is needed to compensate for the grip weight as the weight of the club differs once the larger grips are on.
The premise of the test is good, however as others have mentioned, the execution isn’t great. You’re using blades with the jumbo grips and hollow body irons with standard. Not only that. There’s a 3 or 4° difference between the two sets of clubs. The difference you talk through at the end can almost all be attributed to the clubs. Would be interested to see this done again but with the same set of clubs used.
hey Andy i have a question about something off topic i value your opinion greatly which iron is the better iron for forgiveness and distance and feel you think PXG BLACK OPS or TAYLORMADE P-790's can actually get them at the same price thx cheers from Canada
Wonder about the results with the ZEN LITE or ULTRALITE, understand you are using regular Jumbo Max whose weight is about double, than the lighter models hence perhaps the results of your decreases in swing speed, specially on the longer irons.

Great test Andy and agree - the jumbo grips come in varying weights as well which will make a difference apparently but the cost to change is quite a lot and then have to change back - so also agree if you can’t try before you but very little chance I will change - but may take the normal Golf Pride and two wraps and go up maybe a wrap or two and try that - wedges worry me as well as I like to manipulate the face and don’t see how you can do that with cricket bat grip - however may try on the driver 👍
Keep saying you need the XS jumbomax ultralights on not a medium size, no wonder you lost yardage really imho, my yardages were unaffected switching from standard midsize golf pride to the jumbomax ultralight XS and straightened out my ballflight.
