    Purple flowers are called wisteria and the first structure you walked into was called a summer kitchen and the slats on the walls and ceiling are called bead board

  • @greyeaglem
    @greyeaglem 8 лет назад +22

    That first building you were in is a summer kitchen. They were common, especially in the south as they kept the heat out of the house in the summer time. If you had gone straight back when you first came in and looked in that dark room, you would have probably found shelves where they kept their food cool in the summer. There was no hole for a stove pipe that I could see, so they used to cook on the fire place. They must have quit using it before stoves were common. I wish you would have looked in the closet to the right of the fireplace as it was likely a pantry or larder in it's time. You could tell there had been a door on the upper level that led out onto the porch roof before it fell in.

      To keep the house from getting hot in the Summer correct? I have heard more than one Old Timer, ( born in the 1920's or earlier) that Hush Puppies get the name from the Summer Kitchen era. The cooks would fry up some scrap dough to toss away from the path between kitchen and house. The dogs would run after the treats and not take out one of the younger ones toting food.

    Some of that fabric could be canvas. I know they always do it with plaster, but I have seen it with other types of walls as well. They used to wrap walls in canvas for reasons I dont know. Usually people pull it off thinking it is wallpaper, but sometimes it stays for years. If they were doing any kind of remodeling I would say that could be it.

      +j0419199005252012 i was thinking that it looked like they'd been doing some work at least on the first floor; with the canvas/? and paint cans and stuff. Restoring the slats maybe?

    • @jessirenae08
      @jessirenae08 8 лет назад

      I thought it looked like it, cause of the cans, but you never know with some of the houses you find. Someone could have just dumped old paint cans.

    There is a CREEPY home down here where I live in MD that is stuck in the 30s. My old cleaning company cleaned it and I just wanted to get out. the granddaughter lives next door and won't even go in. left a check taped to the screen door. southern Anne Arundel has some super scary old houses and tobacco farm plantations. :)

  • @Avotts
    @Avotts 8 лет назад +1

    hi
    enjoyed it
    throwing my 2 cents in here. ..hope you don't mind
    the narrow boards with the little channel along the edge is called BEAD BOARD. IT IS VERY HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER.
    I WOULD IF ALLOWED AND PHYSICALLY ASKS PERSONALLY REMOVE EVERY PIECE BY HAND, SAND IT DOWN AND REUSE IT.
    It is sad to see such beautiful lumber going to rot.
    This is only a guess, but the main house did not have a kitchen. there was a breezeway and then the little house which was probably the kitchen and coda quarters.
    That was typical for Manor houses of the old South.
    just guessing from the use of both milled lumber (the bead board) and rough cut lumber the house was built sometime after 1850. probably before 1910. The lentils above the doors...not familiar with that style. it had lathe and plaster walls with bead board wainscotting. would have been a very grand looking home.
    you should have loo I ed around for the old well. probably near the kitchen

    • @MissPickletoes
      @MissPickletoes 8 лет назад

      +Avotts You are correct...they were usually called a summer kitchen...used to keep the heat of the cooking stove out of the main house

  • @BFagan

    I think some of the walls are what is called "tongue-and-groove; something I've rarely seen here in the north but that seems to have been used a lot in the south.

    • @greyeaglem
      @greyeaglem 8 лет назад +4

      I live in the upper mid west, and it's common here too. They call it beadboard. Early incarnation of paneling. I have noticed that in the south they tend to install it with the grooves being horizontal. Around here they install it vertically.

    If you're still in the Carolinas, Murrells Inlet, SC just outside of Myrtle Beach has a fantastic dead mall with a very popular bowling alley and movie theaters (really nice, both of 'em). And dead hotels galore in the area, though I wouldn't muck around inside of them.
    Chinese wisteria is one of my favorite scents. It is, however, very invasive in the Carolinas. But at least it smells better than kudzu, amirite? I'm just plant nerding. My apologies.

    Interesting. I never went looking for what am about to mention, but at 3:18 (3:19, actually -- but it is good to go back a second before), you hear a woman's voice asking a question. Again, I hear these more when I am not listening for it. It is a Class-A EVP, something similar to the hotel you all explored in West Virginia, where you were by yourself. Anyway, I ran it back several times, just to see if maybe it was a weird fart, or stomach noises, or poor Will falling into an abyss. It was none of those things. -- Glennie Sewell,.
