I been a plasterer for 19 years, just did a house relocation job, due to bad weather during transport, had dark orange hardwood stains come through ornamental cornice, I thought bondcrete would sort it out, but bled straight through, this video just saved my ass. Cheers.
Really interesting video, thanks. Zinsser B-I-N is an amazing product for stain blocking. Biggest mistake people make is painting over the stain blocker too quickly and the stain ends up coming through. If you are applying this with a brush or roller, then don't believe the 15-minute dry time claim because it's not long enough, even one hour isn't long enough to lock in the stain - especially when it's cold/wet or humid. So if you don't wait long enough, when you paint the topcoat, it may look ok for a few days, but eventually the stain will show through again. I get the best results when I wait at least 4 hours after I apply the stain blocker, before painting the topcoat.
Thanks Bill love your videos. Quick and simple explanations not like most other you tubers who are long winded and take forever to get to the crux of the matter👍
So stain block does not actually hide stains, it stops them from bleeding through. You have to paint over it with emulsion to cover the stain completely.
£25 + per litre Or I found you can buy a tin if Johnson's damp seal for £9 that does the same job and dries the same time . You can even purchase from the Range .
Wear a Respirator because bins shellac has a very strong odour , high in vocs, it’s also recommended to Shut the pilot light off in the basement if there is not adequate ventilation because this stuff can give a spontaneous combustion because of the fumes.
Thanks for great video. I like it dries in 15 mins. Can I repaint my ceiling after the 15 minutes with water based paint over the shellac oil base zinsser.
hmmm, in my experience if you are using this for stain blocking then 15 minutes is not going to be long enough, it's too risky. The idea is to let the initial coat dry long enough to lock the stain in. This can take even 3 to 4 hours depending on the conditions.
Hi @billshowto - before painting on primer - Zinsser Cover Stain, would you recommend a mist coat? 50% water / emulsion? I have a wall in a kitchen that has salt crystals / effervesence coming through each year. Thanks for you help! J
Bill, what about the blue zinsser, would that be as effective? I've already wallpapered my walls and am terrified of that red one dripping on the walls, i only used ceiling paint on the coving and i can see stains on it :-( love your channel, your videos are amazing xx
The blue zinsser is water based and not as effective on water stains. The red zinsser is a shellac base and is very watery/runny. I would use the yellow zinsser which is an oil based product and easy to work with . Hope this helps👍
Heat will really help, but i agree he needs to dehumidify quickly. In fact, the condensation is so bad he should have one in each room. And not just during painting, but forever. High humidity will destroy a property by leading to toxic molds. If the cause is lack of vapor barriers in the foundation, slab, or sidewalls, that should be fixed $$$. Sometimes such condensation can be due to over air conditioning the space and the differential with the outdoors, for which I’d simply advise, “stop that, and take off the sweater.”
CAN I USE THIS TO PAINT MY KITCHEN CABINETS??? I don't want to do any SANDING. Just want to find something to use to cover over and then Paint them with a WATER BASE PAINT. Is this possible ???
gonna paint a studio room walls and ceiling with taubmans tradex flat black water based paint as a topcoat. would bin primer sealer work as an undercoat? i ask because i have different shades of tinted joint compound and would like to prime to perfect uniform colour as an undercoat.
@@billshowto yeah i noticed it being expensive, what would you recommend as an alternative? would bullseye 123 or coverstain work? just for clarification, that area on my ceiling has had water leaks in the past. if only RUclips allows us to post a pic in comments, i would show you what i’m dealing with.

You’re welcome 👍
They should give you a SHOW on TV man. You are awesome

The clue is in the name 😂
Thanks mate love your vids and has helped me with my handyman business for jobs I wasn’t sure about

Thank you Sir
If the ceiling is popcorn what I have to do please?
So if I still see minor stains through the primer I won't need to add a 2nd coat of primer before applying the topcoat?

Love slowly working my way through, keep it up.
Would you lightly sand out some of those water stains before sealing?
How many coats does it take to go over with the new paint
I wish i watched this before painting over a water stain, can i use this stuff even though ive already painted? How many coats do you need to do?
i hope you are making some good money from RUclips because you have the best CHANNEL period
Bill i like watching your video very professional 👍from phuong at polar fresh

Open the windows and turn the heating up to full blast - you need to drive out the water vapour. Leaving the windows closed is crazy.
Good call. Air flow baby
Hi Bill.
Can you put water based paint on top of that?
Sure can 👍
Yes you can. Once it's dry it's adhearable for any product.
Would feb bounding ceiling do the job
That room needed a dehumidifier not a heater to help remove the moisture. 🙂

What brand roller stick you using

Defiantly. It even works on laminate surfaces.
Great
What type of roller do you use?
Could you use this to cover wallpaper that pulled some of the brown paper from Sheetrock?
You can use it to seal the surface but it will still need to be patched 👍
@@billshowto So all the spots that have hallmarks even after I apply this I still have to put mud down?
If the paper is torn , yes.

It will, but bin is expensive and very thin to work with

if only RUclips allows us to post a pic in comments, i would show you what i’m dealing with.
You can email me the photos. I would use zinsser cover satin ( the yellow one) as it oil based and has good hiding power
sorry for the late reply, i’ve sent you an email with some images of my ceiling as suggested.
Why not use an 18” roller?
Can I paint with water base paint over this right?
Sure can 👍
Can you use a water based paint over this product? Ty 😊
Sure can 👍
Thanks Bill. Why don't you open the windows?
Too much moisture in the air it’s winter 👍
might try this on me strides Bill cheers
I swear by ZINSSER B.I.N
Oh what a bugger! Sorry you had these problems Mate, I feel for you.
Everything happens for a reason. It was a chance to make another video 👍
