Thanks for this! I've had an O5R/W for years sitting on the shelf but have recently pulled it out for a project. The battery is fine now but it is good to know how to replace it.
If you do this, behind the ‘host’ screw there is a small nut that will wander when re assembled. If you can’t find this nut, give the box a good shake till you find it. Before you try to screw the host screw back, get a small piece of Blue tack and squeeze the nut into place then make sure the nut is lined up inserts a small object, this should make sure all is well.
As far as I know the battery placement is the same. Easy to replace. But indeed if you had custom sounds loaded they will be lost. You could opt to reload the factory sounds. In the manual there is a method to load these from internal rom. In the Global menu, select 5C PRESET DATA LOAD, then confirm with OK. Hope this helps. The manual can be downloaded from here: www.korg.com/us/support/download/product/1/372/
You don't need a midi cable-sysex editor for PC to reset this Korg 05 R/W FACTORY sounds (ROM) reset Korg 05R/W (initialize) : * Press GLOBAL MULTI; * Using the BANK/PAGE+ button, scroll to page 05A PRESET DATA ; * Press the +1 button. It will prompt "Are You Sure OK?"; * Press the +1 button again. It will show "Completed". The unit is now reset to factory specs. 😊
You’re right. You only need a midi cable and PC to reload your custom sounds via sysex. Thanks for describing the steps to restore the factory sounds. Very useful!

Good to hear! I had the 05R/W also collecting dust for some years, but then rediscovered it to use it as a polyphonic addition to my modular rack.
many thanks
thanks! :)

Thanks John for your suggestion. Very helpful!
If you have other sound modules that need batteries to be replace, please make videos demonstrating how.
Hi, there are more modules with a couple of fixes that I will be posting. So stay tuned ☺️
I assume that the 03R/W is the same. Is this not DIY if I do not have a SYS EX editor and my PC does not have MIDI?
