I have some books about it and on the internet you can also find a lot of ‘information’ but sometimes contradicting and hard to find solid sources with credible research…

    If you want to reduce the mosquito population around your home or garden then put up some Bat Houses. Then your mosquito population will likely go down. A single adult brown Bat can eat over 1,000 mosquitoes in a single hour if the area of the Bat’s Night time Flight Patterns supports a large mosquito population. U of Michigan Biologists studied Bat and mosquitoes in Wisconsin and did conclude that contrary to other published findings that Bats could and did significantly eat large numbers of mosquitoes in a single night. Mosquitos fly without taking any “evasive flight patterns” making them relatively easy prey for an adult nursing mother bat who could consume her own body weight in mosquitoes (and other insects of course) in a single night. Purple Martins eat plenty insects but at the height Martins fly mosquitoes are usually not found at those altitudes so they are good at reducing other insect populations but not very effective with mosquitoes. So forget plants and if you have a really bad mosquito problem and do not want to resort to chemicals (which could endanger populations of beneficial pollinators) then buy or build and put up a bat house or two (even a rather small bat house can hold 200 adult bats) and then you might also have a free source of guano for use as a fertilizer for your gardening.

      @@judymckerrow6720 I think they are pretty neat critters. Lots of interesting biology. Many species of fruits and flowers depend upon bats for their very existence. I’m some areas where bats have been in decline due to human activity and disease (yes there have been bat pandemics that have wiped out millions of bats) many species of exotic flowers and plants have gone extinct because they relied upon the bats for their existence. I had a Bat House up until Hurricane Ida blew through here two years ago I’m likely going to put up a new one now that I rebuilt the house I live in. But that’s a different story altogether…..

      @Aswaguespack Год назад

      @@DDGLJ hey good analogy and I never connected them to Colonial Vipers 😉 I was watching a professional bat expert remove some bats from a house to relocate and it was really simple to do and without really causing any stress to the bats. Bats have to fall before their wings can “catch air” to enable flight. Very impressive flying skills and with echolocation they are amazing to watch. It’s a shame that they get such a bad and very undeserved reputation.

    I am the one person in a large group who gets all the mosquitos. I get bit bad even wearing long everything, and have a worse reaction to most people. One time my entire back was covered in bites ( wore a tshirt) the itching was insane. My friends could see the welts through my tshirt. Calamine lotion didn’t help. Doc said I have a mosquito bite allergy.
    Fast forward a few decades, I guess my doc was sick of my mosquito bite visits that he ordered a blood test. Well, it’s no wonder nothing works for me, I have 3 genes that make me so attractive to mosquitos. Which is one gene that most people don’t have.
    The only thing that helps me is not going outside or, wearing thick layers of clothing and covered head to toe in the summer, and keeping doors closed.

      Have you looked into the guidelines put out by Bat Conservation International? From the research they've done, bat houses are only useful if they're built to spec (the decorative ones sold at your nearby garden center probably aren't), and positioned correctly, and even then they're not at the top of the list of methods to provide good bat habitat. They mention that giant tower in Florida as a perfect example of somebody not doing any research into what bats actually want.

      @@Gardenfundamentals1 Not looked at this yet, but going to assume it's to do with when they are actively flying.
      Hmm, I still stand by me first comment after reading that. I have no delusions of bats magically eating them all, or even a sizeable percentage. More a way of thinning the numbers a little, alongside other predators. I'm in the north-west of Ireland, so thankfully mosquitos aren't anywhere near the issue they are for a lot of people.
      It makes sense that bats would go for something more worthwhile. They are putting a lot of energy into flying, and a larger moth is a better pay off. But even if they make up a small percentage of a bat's diet, it's still worth making a few bat boxes from scrap wood. They also take very little effort/cost on the part of the gardener to make/install/maintain.
      I think the problems start when gardeners look about for a silver bullet, which doesn't really exist. So the fact bats will take a few opportunistically, gets turned into "bats eat mosquitos". Like it's their preferred prey, or something.
